    Description: The effort to develop classical methods to compute wall interference at transonic speeds is outlined. The two-dimensional theory and three-dimensional development are discussed. Also, some numerical application of the two-dimensional work are indicated. The basic advantages of the asymptotic theory are noted.

    Description: Continuum and spectral-line radio observations of the comets IRAS-Araki-Alcock and Sugano-Saigusa-Fujikawa obtained at a number of observatories during May and June, 1983, are compiled in tables and briefly characterized. The species NH3, H2O, CO, and HCN are considered in detail; visible-range observations of CN are compared; and the implications of the results and the experience gained in performing and coordinating the observations for the detection of important species in other comets, especially Halley's Comet, are explored.

    Description: Approximately 2400 observations of extragalactic radio sources were made between August 1971 and February 1980 during 48 separate sessions. These consisted of 259 delay rate observations at 2.3 GHz (S-band), 796 delay and delay rate observations at either S-band of 8.3 GHz (X-band) and 1325 delay and delay rate observations recorded simultaneously at both S- and X-band. A single multiparameter fit has been applied to the observed values of delay and delay rate to extract astrometric and geophysical parameters from this decade-long sequence. The fit produced estimates of 784 parameters, including station locations, radio source positions, polar motion, Universal Time, the precession constant, and solid earth tides. The a priori model included gravitational bending, the 1980 IAU nutation series, the 1976 IAU expressions for Greenwich mean sidereal time and precession, BIH estimates of Universal Time and polar motion, and monthly mean values for zenith troposphere delay. The rms residuals were 0.52 nsec for delay and 0.30 psec/sec for delay rate. Intercontinental baseline lengths were determined with formal uncertainties of 5 to 10 cm. Universal Time and polar motion were measured at 49 epochs, with formal uncertainties (for the more recent data) of 0.5 msec for UT1 and 6 and 2 mas, respectively, for the X and Y components of polar motion.     Description: Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of 257 extragalactic radio sources with 10 deg of the ecliptic have been conducted at a frequency of 2.29 GHz. Compact components with flux densities greater than 0.1 Jy and angular sizes smaller than the fringe spacings of 2.5 and 3.2 milliarsec were detected in 144 radio sources. This survey was conducted to find compact radio sources to form a high accuracy reference frame for planetary spacecraft navigation. This stable reference frame may also be useful for long-term studies of planetary dynamics.

    Description: The development of laminar flow technology for commercial transport aircraft is discussed and illustrated in a review of studies undertaken in the NASA Aircraft Energy Efficiency (ACEE) program since 1976. The early history of laminar flow control (LFC) techniques and natural laminar flow (NLF) airfoil designs is traced, and the aims of ACEE are outlined. The application of slotted structures, composites, and electron beam perforated metals in supercritical LFC airfoils, wing panels, and leading edge systems is examined; wind tunnel and flight test results are summarized; studies of high altitude ice effects are described; and hybrid (LFC/NLF designs are characterized. Drawings and photographs are provided.

    Description: Experimental results have been obtained for a flapped natural-laminar-flow airfoil, NLF(1)-0414F, in the Langley Low-Turbulence Pressure Tunnel. The tests were conducted over a Mach number range from 0.05 to 0.40 and a chord Reynolds number range from about 3.0 x 10(6) to 22.0 x 10(6). The airfoil was designed for 0.70 chord laminar flow on both surfaces at a lift coefficient of 0.40, a Reynolds number of 10.0 x 10(6), and a Mach number of 0.40. A 0.125 chord simple flap was incorporated in the design to increase the low-drag, lift-coefficient range. Results were also obtained for a 0.20 chord split-flap deflected 60 deg.

    Description: Numerical methods for calculating laminar and turbulent boundary layer development around vertical-short take off and landing engine inlets at high incidence angles are investigated. Various transition models were compared and evaluated in calculations off flow separation bound inside the inlet. Results of the transition effects on the boundary layer characteristics at onset of separation for two types of engine inlet geometries are presented. Some of the numerical results are compared with existing wind-tunnel test data for scaled inlet models to demonstrate the effects of transition models in the numerical scheme. The effects of transition modeling on the boundary layer development are illustrated for typical engine operating conditions.

    Description: This paper describes NASA's Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), which is designed to measure the density temperature, magnetic fields, and the nonthermal velocity fields of solar features on a scale at which the basic physical processes are occurring. A series of 7- to 14-day missions carrying a 1.3-meter solar-observing telescope that has a spatial resolution only slightly larger than the photon mean-free-path of about 80 km will be flown as a Spacelab-attached payload aboard the Space Transportation System (STS) in mid-1990. The telescope (Fig. 1) will be built and integrated by the Perkin-Elmer Corporation and is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Coarse pointing to the sun is provided by the Spacelab instrument pointing system (IPS), whereas fine pointing is provided by the Observatory pointing and control system. The science instruments for the first mission, the photometric filtergraph and the coordinated filtergraph/spectrograph, that are integrated into a combined instrument package are also described.

    Description: Detailed far-IR observations and complemenary submillimeter, 5 GHz continuum and c(18)0 observations of a sample of far-IR selected luminous regions of star formation. The clouds and that the exciting stars lie deep within these condensations. The far-IR sources have diversely shaped 40 micron to 180 micron spectra even through their 60 micron to 100 micron color temperatures are similar. The radio and far-IR results together show that the exciting stars are in clusters containing either zero-age main sequence and pre-main sequence stars or consisting entirely of premain sequence objects. C(18)0 and submillimeter observations imply gas densities approximately .00005 - high enough to make t(sub dust) approximately t(sub gas).
