Notes: Summary Polyethers from 1,4-bis(chloromethylene)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene and 4,4′-biphenol were obtained by phase transfer catalysis, using different catalysts and solvents. The molecular weights and yields were determined, showing a solvent effect and a influence of the catalysts used.

Notes: Summary Fatty acid anilides, the major xenobiotic found in the cooking oils responsible for the Spanish toxic oil syndrome, are immunogenic for rabbits as ascertained by a skin test reaction, the characterization of specific antibodies against anilides and the immunofluorescent detection of ‘anilide dependent antigens’ in tissue slices from treated animals.

Notes: Summary A method is described for the fluorimetric determination of BrO3, at the nanogram level, based on the oxidation of 1,2,4-tri-hydroxyanthraquinone-3-carboxylic acid in sulfuric acid medium. The fluorescence emission is monitored at 585 nm (wavelength of excitation 521 nm). The method shows a detection limit of 5 ng/ml, being the most sensitive of all the established methods for the determination of this anion by photometry and fluorimetry.

Notes: Summary This paper describes a microcalorimeter heating circuit that is software controlled by a microcomputer operating as a square wave oscillator of very precisely known and programmable frequency and period. The duration of the input pulse of energy can be specified to within a few microseconds of an arbitrarily chosen period over an essentially infinite range. Use of the timer is, of course, not restricted to calibration of microcalorimeters but is general.

Notes: Summary The heats (enthalpies) of hydrogenation of three simple mono-unsaturated hydrocarbons have been determined using a new microcomputer controlled electrical calibration system. Results agree with selected (“best”) literature values to within an arithmetic mean absolute deviation of 0.32 kJ·mol−1. We believe that the total uncertainty at the 95% confidence level for determination of the enthalpy of hydrogenation of these compounds is somewhat less than 1kJ·mol−1.

Notes: Summary The fluorescent chelate formed between 1-hydroxy-2-carboxy-anthraquinone and gallium(III) at pH 3.9 has been studied spectrofluorimetrically in an ethanol-water mixture (70/30% V/V). A new method for the fluorimetric determination of gallium(III) is described. The fluorescence is monitored at 580 nm (wavelength of excitation 465 nm) and the range of application of the method is between 50 and 500 ng ml−1. The stoichiometry of the complex has been found to be 1∶1.

Notes: Summary Dimedone bisthiosemicarbazone monohydrochloride has been examined to evaluate its usefulness as a reagent for rapid and sensitive Spectrophotometric determination of chlorate (0.5–5.0 ppm) by oxidation of the reagent in 70% perchloric acid medium and measurement of the yellow product. The molar absorptivity at 417 nm is 1.86×104 l·mole−1·cm−1. The relative standard deviation is 1.6% for 2.5 ppm of chlorate.

Notes: Abstract The intercalation compounds of trimethylphosphate (TMP) in graphite oxide (GO) have been synthezized. Two compounds have been characterized, corresponding to intercalation of one or two molecules of TMP, and have been characterized by gravimetric adsorption, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Bonding between TMP and graphitic oxide takes place through hydrogen bonding with OH groups of the layered material.

Notes: Abstract Assessment of seismic hazard in Panama is made using a seismotectonic regionalization model. The coefficients of Gumbel's Type-I distribution are calculated and return periods for several magnitudes are found. From these coefficients intensities, peak ground acceleration and earthquake hazard for a set of return periods and epicentral distances are estimated and substantial variations in the probability of occurrence are noted. The Panama Fracture Zone (PFZ) and the Panama-South America Suture Zone (PSZ) provinces are the most active in producing earthquakes with a magnitude of about 7.0 in less than 16 yr. Magnitude 7.0 earthquakes in the Azuero province have a return period of about 160 yr, whereas in the Panama Deformed Belt (PDB) province the return period for magnitude 7.5 events is about 175 yr.
