Notes: Polyamines are ubiquitous cellular components that interacts strongly with nucleic acids. Although many of the interactions of oligocations with DNA can be rationalized with polyelectrolyte theories that treat counterions as point charges, some structural effects are evident. We have explored the effects of polyamine structure on one important aspect of DNA behavior, its thermal melting transition, by using a series of spermidine analogs NH3(CH2)3NH2(CH2)nNH33+, where n varies from 2 to 8 [Jorstad et al. (1980) J. Bacteriol. 141, 456-463]. For spermidine itself, n = 4. Tm for calf-thymus DNA in the presence of each of these analogs, and the other naturally occurring polyamines putrescine2+ and spermine4+, was measured over a wide range of NaCl concentrations and polyamine:DNA phosphate ratios. There are modest, but significant structural effects. particularly with the shorter n = 2 and 3 derivatives, whose geometry my not allow full electrostatic interaction with DNA. Longer analogs, on the other hand, are not much different than spermidine in their effects on Tm, though a moderate maximum occurs at n = 5. Since polyamines are important in the cellular condensation and packaging of DNA, we have also delineated the critical polyamine and salt concentrations that are required to cause DNA aggregation. Here again, there are significant structural effects, which are not easily rationalized by any simple considerations.

Notes: This note discusses the numerical solution of the kinematic wave equation under those conditions when the solution contains a discontinuous shock. A finite element solution is described in which shocks are represented by discrete nodal discontinuities. The implementation of the method follows conventional finite element practice over the shockless regions of the solution domain which are coupled by frontal constraints. The basis of the method and examples of its application to the solution of the kinematic wave equation in one and two dimensions are presented.

Notes: The gross morphology and histology of the alimentary tracts of three species of glassy perchlet; Ambassis productus, A. natalensis, and A. gymnocephalus from estuaries on the southeast coast of Africa were investigated. The anatomy of the digestive tracts in all three species was found to be similar. Well-developed dentition and pharyngeal teeth together with a distensible stomach and a low relative gut length (RGL) suggest a predatory and carnivorous habit for all three species. The relative gut lengths of Ambassis species from different estuarine systems are compared‥ Differences in RGL for A. productus and A. natalensis from the Kosi and St Lucia systems with fish from Mdloti estuary are discussed. It is suggested that decreased RGL for fish at Mdloti is attributable to decreased food availability and not to a lack in the calorific content of their diet.Histological investigation revealed the presence of the following regions: a pharynx; an oesophagus; a stomach differentiated into cardiac and pyloric regions; a duodenum or upper intestine; an ileum or lower intestine; and a rectum. Pyloric and rectal sphincters are present. The tunics of the above regions are described. The epithelium of the oesophagus contains taste buds and numerous mucus cells, and varies from stratified anteriorly to simple columnar posteriorly. The muscularis comprises dorsally and ventrally located inner muscle bundles and an outer circular layer. Both layers consist of striated fibres.Gastric glands are present in the mucosa of the cardiac stomach but are absent in the pylorus. Columnar absorbing cells and goblet cells are present in the epithelium of the upper and lower intestine. The rectum is distinguished from the intestine by the proliferation of mucous-secreting cells which are thought to aid defecation.

Notes: Lignocellulose containing 62% cellulose was prepared from corn residue by dilute acid hydrolysis using 5% H2SO4 at 90°C. The lignocellulose was then treated with a cellulose solvent consisting of a ferric sodium tartrate complex in 1.5N sodium hydroxide at levels ranging from 4:1 to 12:1 (solvent volume: corn residue lignocellulose) or a 1.5N sodium hydroxide solution alone. Subsequent hydrolysis with cellulase enzymes from Trichoderma reesei gave cellulose conversions which were two to three times higher than untreated lignocellulose (30%) and approached 90% conversion after 24 h in the best cases. It was found that increasing cellulase enzyme levels from 3.74 lU/g lignocellulose to 7.71 lU/g lignocellulose increased cellulose conversion by 50% at all pretreatment conditions, while an increase from 7.71 to 10.1 lU/g gave only an additional 5-10% increase. Pretreatment with sodium hydroxide resulted in 5-25% lower conversions than observed for cellulose treated with the solvent, depending on enzyme levels and treatment levels. At high enzyme levels, sodium hydroxide pretreatment is almost as effective in enhancing cellulose conversion after 24 h as is pretreatment using the cellulose solvent.

Notes: A capillary rise technique was developed for measuring the effect of the surface viscosities upon the displacement of air by liquids in glass capillaries. Measurements were made in two tubes with optically measured radii of 37.5 and 48.6 μm.No surface viscous effects were observed with doubly distilled water or with octane, in good agreement with the Washburn equation. The behavior of a dilute aqueous solution of dodecyl sodium sulfate was easily distinguished from that corresponding to zero surface viscosities. The surface dilatational viscosity was found to be two orders of magnitude greater than the surface shear viscosity. Previous qualitative (Slattery, 1974, 1979) and quantitative (Giordano and Slattery, 1983) theories for the effect of the interfacial viscosities upon displacement are fully supported by this experimental study.

Notes: Polyester thermosets have been prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, dibromoneopentyl glycol, and styrene, and their thermal degradation has been studied. Thermogravimetry has shown that degradation in air occurs in three main stages. For the 10% bromine polyester, the weight losses corresponded to 16.3%, 69.7%, and 13.9% of the original polymer weight - the temperatures of the DTG peak maxima being 217°C, 345°C, and 530°C, respectively. Infrared analysis of the residues showed that above 250°C there was a gradual reduction in the absorbance of all peaks with increasing temperature, indicating the degradation of all parts of the 3-dimensional polymer structure was occurring in a simultaneous manner. Degradation of the dibromoneopentyl glycol polyesters at 530°C in air proved to be a very complex process since a mixture of organic products was produced which gave rise to well over 100 peaks in the capillary column chromatograms. Under the conditions used, the low temperature degradation products proved to be rich in phthalic anhydride with no benzaldehyde being detected. The yields of benzene, toluene, styrene, and naphthalene increased with increase in temperature.

Notes: The electron impact and chemical ionization mass spectra of several benzoylcycloprpanes carrying a wide variety of ring substituents were examined. Cleavage of the benzoyl-cyclopropyl C—C bond was a dominant process in the spectra of the compounds. Retention of the positive charge with either the benzoyl or the cyclopropyl moiety was influenced by the electron-donating properties of the ring substituents. The stereoselectivity of hydrogen abstraction in the elimination of ArH groups was evaluated using deuterium-labelled analogs.
