    Description: The metric Type-II solar burst event of June 29, 1980, is characterized on the basis of spatially resolved radioheliograph observations obtained at Culgoora, Australia, and visible-light observations obtained with the coronograph/polarimeter of the SMM satellite. The data are presented in images, diagrams, and graphs and discussed in detail. The Type-II emission is found to arise in the dense moving material behind the transient loops, which have sky-plane width 0.5 solar radius and line-of-sight depth 0.1-0.4 solar radius. A faint arc observed moving ahead of the transient loops at about 900 km/sec and not associated with the Type-II burst is attributed to a shock front, and the compression ratio and Alfven Mach number of the enhanced-density region are estimated as n2/n1 = 1.3-3 and M(A) = 1.2-3. The ambient material at 3 solar radii is determined to have Alfven speed 250-625 km/sec and magnetic-field strength 50-120 mG. The total mass of the event is calculated as 700 Tg; the total magnetic energy of the loops is (1.5-15) x 10 to the 29th ergs.

    Description: Low noise high spectral resolution observations of two pure rotation transitions of OH from the solar photosphere were obtained. The observations were obtained using the technique of optically null-balanced infrared heterodyne spectroscopy, and consist of center-to-limb line profiles of a v=1 and a v=0 transition near 12 microns. These lines should be formed in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and are diagnostics of the thermal structure of the upper photosphere. The v=0 R22 (24.5)e line strengthens at the solar limb, in contradiction to the predictions of current one dimensional photospheric models. Data for this line support a two dimensional model in which horizontal thermal fluctuations of order + or - 800K occur in the region Tau (sub 5000) approximately .001 to .01. This thermal bifurcation may be maintained by the presence of magnetic flux tubes, and may be related to the solar limb extensions observed in the 30 to 200 micron region.

    Description: A comparison between proton events and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) based on nearly three years of observations around the recent maximum of solar activity is presented. Peak proton fluxes are found to correlate with both the speeds and the angular sizes of the associated CMEs. It is shown that CME speeds do not significantly correlate with CME angular sizes, so that peak proton fluxes are correlated with two independent CME parameters. With larger angular sizes, CMEs are more likely to be loops and fans rather than jets and spikes and are more likely to intersect the ecliptic.

    Description: A statistical comparison of metric type II bursts and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) during 1979-1982 was carried out. Type II bursts without CMEs were associated with short-lived (0.5 hr) soft X-ray events, but not with interplanetary shocks at the Helios 1 spacecraft. Type II bursts with CMEs were associated with longer-lived X-ray events (3 hr on the average) and interplanetary shocks, and the CMEs had speeds greater than 400 km/s. CMEs without metric type II bursts were divided equally into groups faster and slower than 455 km/s. The faster CMEs were associated with interplanetary shocks, some of which originated on the visible disk where metric type II bursts should have been observed if they had occurred. These results suggest that (1) shocks without CMEs have a relatively impulsive origin and may die out sooner than many shocks with CMEs which are piston driven, and (2) either some fast CMEs do not reach shock-producing super-Alfvenic speeds until they leave the lower corona where the metric emission originates, or these CMEs form shocks that are unable to excite type II emission in the lower corona.

    Description: Observations are presented of the corona during the June 11, 1983 total solar eclipse, together with preliminary results of a coordinated observing program conducted to investigate the relationship between the corona and the lower parts of the solar atmosphere. Synoptic observations of the white light corona and disk in H-alpha are compared with the eclipse image, together with the inferred longitudinal component of the photospheric magnetic field measured using the magnetically sensitive Fe line at 6303 A. Using these data, an interpretation of the global three-dimensional coronal structure is attempted; showing that the eclipse image contains bright features which are far from the plane of the sky, and that it is dominated by streamers over polar filament neutral lines.

    Description: The width-tapered double-cantilever-beam (WTDCB) specimen configuration used to determine the Mode-I interlaminar fracture energy (IFE) of composites has special advantages for routine development work and for quality-assurance purposes. These advantages come primarily from the simplicity of testing and the fact that the specimen is designed for constant change in compliance with crack length, so that the computation of Mode-I IFE is independent of crack length. In this paper, a simplified technique for fabrication and testing WTDCB specimens is described. Also presented are the effects of fiber orientation and specimen dimensions, a comparison of data obtained using the WTDCB specimens and other specimen geometries, and comparison of data obtained at different laboratories. It is concluded that the WTDCB gives interlaminar Mode-I IFE essentially equal to other type specimens, and that it can be used for rapid screening in resin-development work and for quality assurance of composite materials.

    Description: Finite element models were used to study the effects of notch angle variations on the stress state within an Iosipescu shear test speciment. These analytical results were also studied to determine the feasibility of using strain gage rosettes and a modified extensometer to measure shear strains in this test specimen. Analytical results indicate that notch angle variations produced only small differences in simulated shear properties. Both strain gage rosettes and the modified extensometer were shown to be feasible shear strain transducers for the test method. The Iosipoescu shear test fixture was redesigned to incorporate several improvements. These improvements include accommodation of a 50 percent larger specimen for easier measurement of shear train, a clamping mechanism to relax strict tolerances on specimen width, and a self contained alignment tool for use during specimen installation. A set of in-plane and interlaminar shear properties were measured for three graphite fabric/epoxy composites of T300/934 composite material. The three weave patterns were Oxford, 5-harness satin, and 8-harness satin.

    Notes: We have compared the meniscus depletion assay and falling ball viscometry, two means of assessing the extent of gelation in actin-based systems using mixtures of actin and the actin-binding protein filamin. We examined the effect of varying the concentrations of actin and filamin in both assays. The interaction of actin and filamin was detected only above a threshold concentration of filamin. This threshold concentration was lower for falling ball viscometry than for the meniscus depletion assay at equal actin concentrations. At constant concentrations of filamin, an increase in actin concentration caused an increase in apparent viscosity measured by the falling ball assay, but a decrease in sedimentability detected by the meniscus depletion assay. The rate of sedimentation of actin was dependent on the molar ratio of actin to filamin. At each molar ratio, the sedimentation of actin was not dependent on the specific concentrations of actin and filamin used. The apparent viscosity was dependent on both the molar ratio and the specific concentrations of actin and filamin. To relate the present results to earlier studies, we examined mixtures of actin and filamin using a macroscopic assay of gelation (tube tipping assay), and polarized light microscopy. The effect of increasing filamin concentration in the four assays was compared at three actin concentrations. Mixtures of actin and filamin whose apparent viscosities were low enough to be estimated by falling ball viscometry were optically isotropic fluids that flowed out of inverted test tubes. Mixtures of actin and filamin in the range of sensitivity of the meniscus depletion assay were either viscous fluids or gels, and were either optically isotropic or anisotropic. Thus, the four assays provide different estimates of gelation. Both the meniscus depletion assay and falling ball viscometry can be used to determine relative gelation activity, but neither can be used as a quantitative assay of gelation.

    Notes: Fluorescent derivatives of cellular proteins that retain their native characteristics have become useful probes to investigate the dynamics of specific cytoskeletal proteins. In the experiments reported here, a previously characterized fluorescent derivative of tubulin, bimane-tubulin [Wadsworth and Sloboda, 1982a], was used to investigate microtubule assembly in vitro. The results demonstrate that bimanetubulin was competent to assemble onto a variety of organizing centers in vitro, including microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs) present in homogenates of sea urchin eggs, isolated mitotic apparatuses (MAs), and lysed mitotic cells. When homogenates of fertilized sea urchin eggs containing MTOCs were incubated with bimane-tubulin at 37°C, discrete areas of linear fluorescence were observed. Only diffuse fluorescence was observed when calcium or colchicine was added to the homogenate or if the temperature was maintained at 0°C. Negative-stain electron microscopy of the fluorescent arrays revealed morphologically normal microtubules radiating from electron dense regions. When mitotic spindles, isolated in glycerol containing buffers and therefore cold stable, were incubated with bimane-tubulin, linear fluorescence was observed emanating from the spindle poles but not from the region occupied by the kinetochores. MAs incubated with bimane-labeled bovine serum albumin or bimane-labeled microtubule-associated proteins showed only diffuse fluorescence. However, when mitotic cells which were hypotonically lysed in the absence of detergents or microtubule stabilizing solvents, were perfused with bimane-tubulin intense fluorescence was observed in the asters and throughout the spindle. Two experiments suggested that the fluorescence observed in the results outlined above was due to the assembly of normal microtubules from the fluorescent subunits. First, the observed fluorescence was sensitive to cold temperataure, which is known to disassemble microtubules. Second, when the isolated, fluorescent MAs were examined by thin section electron microscopy, microtubules of normal diameter were seen. No aggregated material appeared associated with the walls of the microtubules, which might have been expected if the fluorescent protein was nonspecifically adsorbed to the microtubules. The results of these experiments demonstrate that isolated, stabilized MAs support the growth of new microtubules from the spindle poles while labile spindles, present in lysed cells, incorporate fluorescent tubulin throughout the spindle and asters. The significance of these results for hypotheses concerning microtubule assembly and disassembly during mitosis is discussed.
