    Description: Environmental consequences of economic growth and development became an area of major national concern primarily in industrialized countries during the nineteen-sixties. Undesirable side-effects of development became highly visible in terms of air, water, land, and noise, pollution, and people in such countries became concerned with the continuing environmental degradation and impacts on their health and life-style. The emphasis, however, was primarily on the physical environment.Two problems received much attention: the constantly increasing resource-use in the developed countries, and population explosion in the less-developed countries. Many doomsday scenarios were put forward, and there was a clamour for ‘no-growth’ in the West. This created much apprehension in the less-developed countries, because development was urgently needed to improve the living-standards of their citizens. Thus, ‘pollution of poverty’ became an important issue at the UN Conference on the Human Environment, which was held at Stockholm in 1972.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of semicrystalline polymers are very much dependent on the molecular orientation. The orientation function to deal with the elastic moduli data of Hadley et al. (1969) are treated under new aspects. To determine the nature of orientation function from empirical data a relation of the form Sinθ=f (n) Sinθ′ is assumed to describe the change in the orientation angle of a unit from θ′ to θ for the draw ration. Birefringence experimental data are used to find the orientation functionf (n) which is then used to calculate elastic properties. The agreement of the experimental values ofE 0 andE 90 over the entire draw ratio range is found to be satisfactory for Nylon, low density polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. This furnishes strong empirical evidence for the validity of the orientational model for the above substances.

    Notes: Summary The hybrid GH cell strain, 928-9b, isolated from PRL+ (prolactin [PRL] producing) GH4Cl and PRL (PRL non-producing) FIBGH12CI cells, has specific TRH (thyroliberin) receptors, yet does not respond to this peptide hormone. Unlike the parent strain, GH4Cl, TRH does not stimulate synthesis or release of PRL in the hybrid strain. In contrast, treatment of 928-9b cells with another peptide, EGF (epidermal growth factor), stimulates both release and synthesis of PRL. The number of EGF receptors in the hybrid strain (2.5 × 103/cell) and the affinity of these receptors for ligand (2.2 nM) are comparable to that of the parent strain, GH4C1. The EGF dose response curve is also essentially the same for parent and hybrid cells for the enhancement of PRL production. A 3-8-fold enhancement of PRL production is observed and 1/2 maximal enhancement occurs at approximately 5 × 1011 M EGF for both strains. TRH does not have any potentiating effect on EGF-induced stimulation of PRL release or PRL synthesis in the hybrid strain. Although EGF and TRH have similar biological effects in responsive GH cells, binding of one hormone to its receptors does not modulate the binding of the heterologous hormone. These findings demonstrate that more than one effect of TRH is defective in 928-9b cells even though EGF responses are intact. This suggests that 1) TRH-stimulated PRL release and TRH-stimulated PRL production have a common intermediate step, and 2) TRH and EGF have a different mechanism of action in GH cells.

    Notes: Abstract The subsurface deformation during dry sliding of Al-Si alloys is studied by fragmentation of silicon particles. The size of the fragmented particles does not vary with load. The depth of deformation is found to increase with increase in normal load. This experimental observation agrees with load-deformation depth characteristics obtained by a slip line field model.

    Notes: Summary Theoretical and experimental analyses have been carried out for determining the injection condition below which the formation of air core does not take place in the course of flow of a time-independent power-law fluid through a swirl nozzle. Analytical solution lends one distinct value of generalized Reynolds number at the inlet to a nozzle below which the air core is not formed. Experiments reveal that there exist two limiting values of such generalized Reynolds number regarding the formation of air core in a nozzle. One value being the upper limit below which steady flow occurs without air core, the other one is the lower limit above which steady flow with fully developed air core persists. In between these two limiting values, there prevails a transition zone through which fully developed air core is set up within the nozzle. For all the nozzles, theoretical results are in fair agreement with the experimental values of upper limit of generalized Reynolds numbers with respect to steady flow without air core. Amongst all the pertinent independent geometrical parameters of a nozzle, the orifice-to-swirl chamber-diameter ratio has the remarkable influence on generalized Reynolds number describing the initiation of air core.

    Notes: Summary Decomposition studies with humic acids (HAs) present in HA-clay complexes revealed that such decomposition decreases at higher clay concentrations. At high clay concentration, moreover, it has also been observed that smaller and more flexible humic molecules are less susceptible to the said decomposition as compared to larger and more rigid structures.
