Notes: The dynamic analysis of a continuous, aerobic, fixed-film bioreactor has been performed. Rigorous mathematical models have been developed for a fluidized-bed fermentor with biofilm growth. The transient performance of the reactor is appraised in terms of outlet penicillin concentration for constant, as well as variable carbon substrate feed rates. The effect of the reactor oxygen transfer capacity is elucidated for those cases employing substrate feeding strategies. The results show that penicillin production in a continuous, fixed-film bioreactor reaches a maximum with processing time, but subsequently decreases as cell mass accumulates and substrate deficiencies occur. The maximum production level can be maintained for increased operating times if the substrate supply is continuously increased. The duration of this prolonged production is a direct function of the rate of increase and the operating time at which the increase is initiated. The oxygen transfer capacity of the reactor was found to be important to the effectiveness of a feeding strategy.

Notes: The analysis of a continuous, aerobic, fixed-film bioreactor is performed by simulating the behavior of penicillin production in a three-phase fluidized bed. Rigorous mathematical models are developed for a fluidized-bed fermentor in which bioparticles are fluidized by the liquid medium and air. The steady-state performance of the fluidized-bed reactor is appraised in terms of penicillin productivity and outlet concentration by considering the two extremes in contacting patterns, complete back-mix and plug flow, in the absence of a growing biofilm. The results show that the complete back-mix contacting pattern is preferred over that of plug flow due to the nature of the penicillin kinetic relationships. It is also shown that for the dual-nutrient (glucose and oxygen) penicillin reaction system the optimum biofilm thickness does not equal the penetration depth of a limiting nutrient, but depends upon the total reactor configuration.

Notes: A model is presented to describe the behavior of falling film fractionators with evaporation or condensation. Experimental measurements of vapor composition, vapor temperature and wall temperature profiles were made. Close agreement suggests that the model is applicable to both adiabatic and nonadiabatic conditions.

Notes: Water rivulets are produced on inclined flat plates made of high-density polyethylene, Mylar, Plexiglas and acetate film. Conditions are obtained for straight rivulets to begin to meander and for measuring rivulets to cease their unsteadiness. These critical conditions are correlated using a one-dimensional theory of high Reynolds number slender rivulets in which pressure gradients generated by curvature, surface tensionand contact-angle hysteresis balance.

Notes: The electron impact mass spectra of the chemical carcinogens 4-(4-aminophenyl)-2-methylaminothiazole, 4-(4-aminophenyl)-2-methylaminothiazole, and 4-(4-aminophenyl)-2-aminothiazole were studied. The 3-(4-aminophenyl)-2-substituted thiazoles were isolated from the anaerobic microsomal reduction of their respective 4-nitrophenyl analogues. Microsomes prepared from rat and rabbit kidney tissues were used. The identity of the reduction products were established by chemical synthesis and mass spectrometry. The mass spectrometric fragmentation of the nitro derivative shows prominent ions arising from the loss of the nitro group, ring enlargement of the thiazoles, and the phenylthiirene ion resulting from 1,2-cleavage of the thiazole ring. In the 4-(4-aminophenyl)-2-substituted amino derivative prominent ions result from the preferential 1,2-cleavage of the thiazole ring to give the common 2-(4-aminophenyl) thiirene ion and subsequent fragmentation of this ion.

Notes: A study of the chemical ionization mass spectral characteristics of a series of derivatized 1-benzyltetrahy-droisoquinoline alkaloids is presented. Tetrahydropapaveroline and some related benzyltetrahydroisoquinolines were converted to their corresponding O-trimethylsilyl of N-trifluoroacetyl-O-trimethylsilyl derivatives prior to analysis by combined gas chromatographic methane chemical ionization mass spectrometry. The chemical ionization mass spectra of the derivatized alkaloids are compared to the electron impact mass spectra of the N-trifluoroacetyl-O-trimethylsilyl derivative of tetrahydropapaveroline, a representative benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid. The effects of the nitrogen substituent and ion source pressure on the relative abundance of significant ions in the chemical ionization mass spectra of these alkaloids are also described.

Notes: Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry has been used to examine a series of rhodium, iridium and platinum organimetallic complexes, in which a cumulene ligand is attached to the metal in either σ-or π-bonding fashion. The most intense ion formed in the rhodium and platinum series is the metal-bis(triphenylphosphine) ion, while the [Ir(P(C6H5)3)2CO]+ ion is most intense for the iridium series. The platinum complexes show the most intense molecular ion peaks (up to 35% relative intensity), while the rhodium complexes show the least intense molecular ion peaks. The primary fragmentations of all these complexes occur at the metal-ligand bonds. The cumulenic ligand is lost as an impact unit in all cases. The FAB mass spectra of Rh(P(C6H5)3)3Cl (Wilkinson's catalyst), Ir(P(C6H5)3)2COCl (Vaska's compound), Rh(P(C6H5)3)2COCl and Pt(P(C6H5)3)2(C2H4)-synthetic precursors or related compounds to the organometallic complexes examined here-are included for comparison.
