    Description: Ultraviolet spectra of comet Austin (1982) obtained in July 1982 at heliocentric distances ranging from 1.10 to 0.81 AU preperihelion with the IUE reveal that the comet is very similar in chemical composition and appearance to comet Bradfield (1979X). In addition, the derived H2O production rate is found to vary with heliocentric distance as r to the -3.6, similar to the r to the -3.7 behavior found for comet Bradfield. It is pointed out, however, that the limited sample rate precludes the observation of the short-term variations which could be produced by a rotating nonuniform cometary nucleus.

    Description: The present mapping of the 3P1-3P2 fine structure line emission from neutral atomic oxygen near the galactic center shows the emission to be extended over more than 12 pc along the galactic plane, centered on the position of Sgr A West. The rotational velocity of the O I gas at R of about 1 corresponds to a mass within the central parsec of about 3 million solar masses. The forbidden O I line probably arises in a predominantly neutral atomic region immediately outside the ionized central parsec of the Galaxy. Gas temperatures are greater than 100 K, and the total integrated luminosity radiated in the line, which is about 100,000 solar luminosities, substantially contributes to the cooling of the gas. The 3P1-3P0 fine structure line of the O III forbidden line has also been detected at 88 microns toward Sgr A West, coming from high density ionized gas.

    Description: A model is presented which depends on the preferential deposition of heating in the legs of a coronal loop and which produces a stable prominence-scale condensation at the loop top. Dynamic stability is attained by the subsequent adjustment of local parallel gravity by a magnetic inversion at the loop (or arcade) apex. A nonlinear numerical simulation of this process, which includes a deep chromosphere, a heating rate with a fixed dissipation length, and full solar gravity is described.

    Description: A pulsar with a period of 5.75 ms and a dispersion measure of 25/cu cm pc has been found in the direction of 47 Tucanae. Despite its probable origin as a member of a binary system, timing measurements show that the pulsar is now single. The observed dispersion measure is consistent with the pulsar lying outside the Galactic electron layer and within 47 Tucanae, but it is very different from the value of 67/cu cm pc for the pulsars that were reported recently as being in this globular cluster. It is suggested that the latter pulsars probably do not in fact lie within 47 Tucanae.

    Description: Thermal instability driven by optically thin radiation is believed to initiate the formation of plasma filaments in the solar corona. The fact that filaments are observed generally to separate regions of opposite, line-of-sight, magnetic polarity in the underlying photosphere suggests that filament formation requires the presence of a highly sheared, local magnetic field. Two-dimensional, nonlinear, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the local genesis and growth of solar filaments in a force-free, sheared, magnetic field were performed, and the evolution of generic perturbations possessing broad spatial profiles was traced. It was found that simulations of the evolution of initial random-noise perturbations produce filamentary plasma structures that exhibit densities and temperatures characteristic of observed solar filaments. Furthermore, in each of these simulations, the filament axis lies at a finite angle with respect to the local magnetic field, consistent with solar observations.

    Description: The importance of the form of the driving mechanism in MHD simulations of coronal mass ejections is investigated. A model simulation problem is devised, and it is found that the use of a simple form for the initial corona, with an upward moving parcel of cold, dense plasma as the driving mechanism, can produce results that are consistent with many of the features observed by coronagraphs. The results imply that the nature of the driving mechanism may play an important role in determining the dynamical evolution of mass ejections.

    Description: Magnetic field structures in the solar wind, characterized by a variation of the field vectors within a plane inclined to the ecliptic ('Planar Magnetic Structures', PMSs), were reported recently (Nakagawa et al., 1989). These PMSs have the property that the plane of variation of the field also contains the nominal Parker spiral direction. An observation of a PMS where the direction of the line of intersection of the plane of field variation with the ecliptic plane makes a large (about 80 deg) angle to the Parker spiral direction is presented. Furthermore, the angular variables of the field (1) vary over a restricted range, and (2) are linearly related. The latter property is related to the former. Currently proposed models for the origin of PMS, inasmuch as they require field configurations which retain strict alignment with the Parker spiral direction from formation to observation, are probably incomplete.

    Description: The paper reports results of a magnetic field measuring campaign on the active K component of the RS CVn system HR 1099, using Zeeman-Doppler imaging. A localized magnetic field is detected near quadrature (phase 0.85). Assuming this magnetic region has a circular shape, its longitude and latitude are, respectively, estimated to be 86 + or - 4 deg and 5 + or - 5 deg. This equatorial region is largely monopolar, has a mean field strength of 985 + or - 270 G, covers 18 + or - 3 percent of the total stellar surface and may be colocalized with a bright photospheric spot.

    Description: Low-noise (S/N greater than 100), high spectral resolution observations of two pure rotation transitions of OH from the solar photosphere are used to make inferences concerning the thermal structure and inhomogeneity of the upper photosphere. It is found that the v = O R22(24.5)e line strengthens at the solar limb, in contradiction to the predictions of current one-dimensional photospheric models. The results for this line support a two-dimensional model in which horizontal thermal fluctuations in the upper photosphere are of the order plus or minus 800 K. This thermal bifurcation may be maintained by the presence of magnetic flux tubes and may be related to the solar limb extensions observed in the 30-200-micron region.

    Description: The results of Monte Carlo simulations of steady state shocks generated by a collision operator that isotropizes the particles by means of elastic scattering in some locally defined frame of reference are presented. The simulations include both the back reaction of accelerated particles on the inflowing plasma and the free escape of high-energy particles from finite shocks. Energetic particles are found to be naturally extracted out of the background plasma by the shock process with an efficiency in good quantitative agreement with an earlier analytic approximation (Eichler, 1983 and 1984) and observations (Gosling et al., 1981) of the entire particle spectrum at a quasi-parallel interplanetary shock. The analytic approximation, which allows a self-consistent determination of the effective adiabatic index of the shocked gas, is used to calculate the overall acceleration efficiency and particle spectrum for cases where ultrarelativistic energies are obtained. It is found that shocks of the strength necessary to produce galactic cosmic rays put approximately 15 percent of the shock energy into relativistic particles.
