Notes: Abstract This note contains a program for rational interpolation with degree of numerator equal toL and of denominator equal toM (forL≥M). The program will either produce the rational interpolation of the data (x j,f j),j=0,...,L+M by a (generalized) continued fraction or state that the interpolation is not feasible because there are unattainable points. We use the algorithm given in [2] and incorporate the reordering of data for numerical stabilisation due to Graves-Morris [1]. The reordering may be suppressed. The performance of the program is illustrated by several examples.

Notes: Abstract The combination of two physically-based models of solar radiationcloud attenuation and a steady state surface energy budget made possible the systematic examination of the causal effects of varying solar altitudes, selected cloud types and amounts, and air temperatures on the resultant energy budget components extant in two contrasting (grassy and barren) landscapes. The grassy landscape reacted more conservatively to the forcing by changing solar angles, cloud, and air temperature regimes. The results are considered as universal and they are assumed to encompass many possible extremes encountered in the continuum formed by real world landscapes.

Notes: Abstract A physically-based solar radiation transmission model and a slope energy budget model were available which used climatic observations, averaged over 10-deg north-south latitude bands. This made possible the systematic examination of the diurnally changing energy budget components of net radiation, conduction, sensible, and latent heat flux occurring at all slope angles (0 to 90 deg) and slope directions (south-, west-, and north-facing). The present analysis utilized two contrasting landscapes along a latitudinal transect of the east coast of the Americas (northern hemisphere). Among the results, the maximum net radiation for all slope angles and directions occurred at noon on a 40-deg, south-facing slope for latitude 60. Generally, latent and sensible heat fluxes were similar in trend and magnitude between latitudes 0 and 35. Poleward, sensible heat flux increased with advancing latitude at the expense of latent heat flux. A great diversity in net radiation, sensible, and latent heat flux was obtained between different slopes and their orientation at a paniculate latitude. In addition to hourly rates of the energy budget components, daily positive sums of net radiation, sensible, and latent heat flux were examined. It is assumed that the portrayed patterns are general enough to add to our increasing understanding of the contrasts possible in a real-world north-south transect.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary From the viewpoint of the analyst, the semiconductor technologist can react in two ways, when malfunctioning of a semiconductor device occurs. (a) On the basis of long experience and a lot of intuition he can systematically change the different process parameters. In general this approach produces success quickly, but it is success that may, however, only last a short time because the basic cause of the malfunction has not been found. (b) The technologist may ask the analyst to provide him with a better understanding of the cause of the malfunction by carrying out an appropriate analysis. In general this method needs more time before success is achieved; in the long run, however, it is the method to be preferred because it raises hopes — by insight into the mechanism causing the malfunction — of a permanent elimination of the disturbing factors. The interaction between semiconductor technologist and analyst on the basis of the latter approach will be discussed in detail. The basic philosophy here is that the main steps in a given technology should be supervised by a relevant analysis in order to achieve a high yield of the envisaged device. Both macrovolume and microvolume analysis, carried out with classical chemical methods, and structure analysis, carried out with the modern but expensive techniques of thin film analysis (Auger electron spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, secondary ion mass spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and electron microprobe), are necessary. This topic is discussed in detail by selected examples of analyses that have to be carried out at the different stages of a given technological process.
