Description / Table of Contents: Raman and infrared spectra of ethylmalonic acid [C2H5CH(COOH)2, C2H5CD(COOD)2] and its potassium salts [C2H5CH(COOH)(COOK), C2H5CD(COOD)(COOK) and C2H5CH(COOK)2, C2H5CD(COOK)2] in aqueous solution were recorded from 3500 to 200 cm-1. The analysis of the polarization of the Raman lines led us to the conclusion that ethylmalonic acid and its dipotassium salt belong to Cs and the acid salt to the C1 group. An assignment of the observed lines as fundamentals is proposed.

Notes: Light scattering, viscosity and GPC measurements were performed on a homologous series of linear polyethylenes with viscosity average molar masses in decahydronaphthalene at 135°C between 1,0 · 105 and 2,7 · 106 g · mol-1 and relatively broad molar mass distributions. 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, α-chloronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene (decalin) and decane were used as solvents. In the case of linear polyethylene in decahydronaphthalene and decane relationships between intrinsic viscosity and weight average molar mass were established. The values of the weight average molar masses obtained by light scattering are considerably higher than those obtained by viscosity and GPC measurements. These discrepancies are explained by molecular aggregation of the polyethylene macromolecules.

Notes: Scattering functions for linear polyethylenes were calculated, using different assumptions, and compared with experimentally determined scattering functions of the system polyethylene/decane. It is pointed out, that the polyethylene macromolecules in a good solvent can be treated as statistical coils with a non-uniform expansion and a constant average expansion exponent ε and not as statistical coils with uniform expansion. Comparison of the experimentally determined and the calculated scattering functions yields a molar mass distribution of polyethylene which is in agreement with the results from GPC-measurements within the limits of experimental error.

Notes: A numerical treatment of the signal produced by an electrode onto which an artificial enzyme membrane is mounted can give the concentration of the substrate (glucose, saccharose, lactose, amino acids, etc.) in solution. In the example of a glucose analyzer, in which glucose oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of glucose, the computer receives pO2 level data from the electrode and calculates the glucose concentration. The transient electrode signal, measured as the enzyme membrane is exposed to a solution of glucose, is least-square approximated by a third-degree polynomial whose slope at inflection point is characteristic of the external glucose concentration. A calibration procedure provides a cubic spline approximation of glucose concentration as a function of slope, thus enabling automatic measurement of samples. The computer performs the calculations, and actuates valves for air rinsing, introduction of the sample, and water rinsing.

Notes: An experimental device was constructed to allow nearly simultaneous measurements to be made on temperature and gas composition at different depths in a solid-substrate fermentation bed. The time-dependent values of temperature, mol % O2 and mol % CO2 were measured at five positions in beds 6.35 cm (2.5 in.) deep. With a tempeh fermentation (Rhiopus oligosporus growing on soybeans) the temperature gradient could be as steep as 3°C/cm during active mold growth and concentration of CO2 could reach 21 vol. % in the bottom layer.

Notes: Catalyst deactivation in an isothermal fixed-bed reactor under pore-mouth poisoning conditions is investigated theoretically using a discrete mixing cell model. Two fundamental relationships which characterize the poisoning process in the reactor are identified and incorporated into the model to develop a simple graphical procedure for a quick, general insight into the problem. This graphical method is extended to design pellet impregnation profiles along the reactor which would give nondeteriorating reactor performance up to a given time. The effects of various system parameters on the lifetime and conversion performance of the reactor are also examined analytically, graphically and numerically.

Notes: Using direct difference ir and laser Raman spectroscopy, the sequential hydration of hen egg-white lysozyme was monitored. The ir data allowed us to identify some specific molecular hydration events that occur as water is added, whereas the Raman is interpreted in terms of conformational changes. The largest of these solvent-induced changes occurs below the hydration level at which activity commences.
