Notes: Abstract Estimation of ridership on a new transit system in an area where no comparable service existed before is a difficult task of transit planning. Traditional modal split models cannot be used in these cases, because no data or basis for developing a new model or adjusting a “borrowed” model are available. One of the techniques which can be used in this type of situation, is to perform a “concept test” based on public opinion. This approach, however, is plagued with the phenomenon of non-commitment bias of interviewees, and tends to overestimate the ridership. A new fixed route and fixed schedule transit service in Johnson City in Tennessee provided a rare opportunity to perform an investigation on the non-commitment bias through “before” and “after” surveys. The analysis of the non-commitment and actual responses of a sample of residents revealed substantial bias. Overall, the non-commitment ridership estimate was about twice (100% greater than) the actual ridership.:It was also observed that the bias was higher for persons owning automobiles, and for work and shopping trips.

Notes: Abstract A new model is proposed for calculating angular distributions in preequilibrium reactions. In this model, as in the model of Feshbach et al. the system consisting of target plus projectile initially branches into two sets of states with either no particle in the continuum (multistep compound states) or with at least one particle in the continuum (multistep direct states). The multistep compound emission is assumed to be isotropic while the angular distribution of the multistep direct emission is described using the fast particle model of Mantzouranis et al. A similar master equation is used for both chains of states differing only in the angular dependence of the emission rates. The two chains of states are treated independantly neglecting inter-branch transitions. The angular distributions for 14.6 MeV neutrons calculated using this model are found to be in better agreement with the data than the fast particle model.

Notes: Summary A new extractive photometric method has been developed for a binary complex of vanadium(V) with salicylhydroxamic acid, a bluish-violet complex at pH 3.0 and a violet ternary complex system with ammonium thiocyanate at pH 0.95, both complex species being extractable into methylisobutylketone. The violet complex absorbs at 540 nm and is stable up to 48 hr at 23–25°. The sensitivity is 0.0061μg V(V) cm−2. The method has been applied for the analysis of ores and alloy steels containing vanadium.

Notes: Summary Palladium forms a violet-red complex with pentane-2∶4-bis-(o-mercaptophenyl)-anil at pH 1.5 to 3.0. The complex has an absorption maximum at 510 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the range 2 to 16 p. p. m. of palladium, where the percent relative error per 1% absolute photometric error is 2.70%. Palladium combines with the reagent in the ratio of 1∶1. The calculated dissociation constant is of the order 10−6 at 25°. Palladium can be determined in the presence of large excess of foreign ions, both cations and anions.

Notes: Summary High energyα-particles (∼ 16 MeV) and 254 nm ultraviolet light produced dose dependent linear increase of lipid hydroperoxides in the dried thin film state. For both types of radiation, an inverse dose-rate effect, i.e., a protracted radiation dose was more effective than a shorter, more intense one of larger size, was observed. Ultraviolet light (254 nm) produced higher yields of hydroperoxides in the aqueous liposomal suspension of lipid than in its dried thin film state.

Notes: Summary Enhanced killing of bacteria was obtained by radiation reaching the earth during total solar eclipse (February 16, 1980) than during the corresponding time of a normal day (February 26, 1980). The killing was not due to the formation of sunlight induced photoproducts of tryptophan. The damage to the bacteria exposed to sunlight could be repaired by photoreactivation.

Notes: Abstract Static axially symmetric solutions in vacuum are obtained in the general scalar-tensor theory proposed by Nordtvedt. The solutions are asymptotically flat and under certain conditions give very large red shift. The asymptotic behavior and singularity are studied and a comparison is made with a corresponding solution with spherical symmetry. It is also observed that with a conformal transformation the Nordtvedt metric appears to reduce to the Brans-Dicke one.

Notes: Abstract We generalise Ernst's derivation of the axially symmetric solutions of Einstein's field equations to the general scalar-tensor theory proposed by Nordtvedt. The solution of the Nordtvedt theory differs by a conformai transformation from the Brans-Dicke solution. The Kerr-like solution of the Nordtvedt theory is obtained as an example.
