    Description: A planar liquid layer is bounded below by a rigid plate and above by an interface with a passive gas. A steady shear flow is set up by imposing a temperature gradient along the layer and driving the motion by thermocapillarity. This dynamic state is susceptible to two types of thermal-convective instabilities: (i) stationary longitudinal rolls, which involve the classical Marangoni instability studied by Pearson; and (ii) unsteady hydrothermal waves, which involve a new mechanism of instability deriving its energy from the horizontal temperature gradients. Thermal stability characteristics for liquid layers with and without return-flow profiles are presented as functions of the Prandtl number of the liquid and the Biot number of the interface.     Description: When a laser beam is used as the energy source for welding two pieces of metal together, a hole is formed perpendicular to the plane of the workpiece. The latter is moved relative to the laser and metal is transferred from the front to the rear by fluid flow round the hole. The equations governing the process are set out and the conditions at the two boundaries in the problem (one between the hole and the molten metal, and the other between the liquid and the solid states of the metal) are considered.Approximate solutions of the problem for low welding speeds are obtained for four different models. The first is one in which the viscosity is taken to be constant. In the second, the viscosity is allowed to depend linearly on temperature. The third model divides the liquid into a region in which the cooler part is taken to be viscous and the hotter part inviscid; the fourth model is then constructed as a limit, with the liquid motion considered as wholly inviscid. It is found that the motion is not irrotational in this last model. The models all display a downstream displacement of the boundary between the solid and liquid states, in agreement with observations. An expression for the minimum power of the laser is calculated.

    Description: The stability of steady isothermal flow of one-dimensional Newtonian fibres is considered. Bifurcation theory yields a stable supercritical Hopf bifurcation, with frequency decreasing for increasing winder speeds near the critical winder speed. A new Chebyshev expansion procedure is used with time-marching to obtain accurate numerical solutions valid far from the critical point. Our numerical solution agrees well with our analytical solution near the critical winder speed, but differs significantly from those of previous numerical models. There is qualitative agreement with a previous isothermal experiment for oscillation amplitude but not for oscillation frequency.     Description: A horizontal layer is heated from below and cooled from above so that the enclosed single component liquid is frozen in the upper part of the layer. When the imposed temperature difference is such that the Rayleigh number across the liquid is supercritical, there is Benard convection coupled with the dynamics of the solidification interface. An experiment is presented which shows that the interfacial corrugations that result are two dimensional when this solid is thin but hexagonal when the solid is thick. A weakly nonlinear convective instability theory is presented which explains this behaviour, and isolates this ‘purely thermal’ mechanism of pattern selection. Jump behaviour is seen in the liquid layer thickness at the onset of hexagonal convection. © 1984, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

    Description: Prior to European settlement, oligohaline and mesohaline sections of Chesapeake Bay draining Piedmont saprolite supported diverse and abundant diatom and macrophyte populations. Compositional changes in diatoms and macrophytes in oligohaline sections correspond with 17th- and 19th-century deforestation and increased siltation, while effects on downstream populations were less notable. After deforestation, previously sparse diatom populations in a mesohaline estuary draining sandy Coastal Plain soils became more abundant. Fertilization of cultivated land was accompanied by increased production of both attached and free-floating diatoms. After the discharge of sewage, diatom populations increased enormously in the affected areas, followed by a dramatic decrease. The decrease suggests silica limitation after intense phosphorus enrichment. The loss of macrophytes and increase in planktonic diatoms in oligohaline areas in recent years resemble the historical sequences observed in lakes undergoing eutrophication. However, in the estuary, similar declines have also occurred in macrophyte populations in mesohaline areas where eutrophication is much less severe, but where chlorine and herbicide toxicity during the past 20 yr is similar to upstream areas.

    Description: In western North America, pollen data from highland lakes are often used to reconstruct vegetation on the adjacent lowlands. Plant macrofossils and pollen from packrat middens now provide a means to evaluate such reconstructions. On the basis of pollen diagrams from the Chuska Mountains, H. E. Wright, Jr., A. M. Bent, B. S. Hansen, and L. J. Maher, Jr., ((1973), Geological Society of America Bulletin, 84 , 1155–1180) arrived at conservative estimates for late Pleistocene depression of highland conifers. In their interpretation, a proposed slight depression of 500 m for lower tree line precluded expansion of Pinus ponderosa into elevations now in desertscrub. Instead, it was suggested that pinyon pine and Artemisia occupied the lowland plateaus. Packrat midden records on either side of the Chuskas fail to verify this model. Early Holocene middens from Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, and a terminal Pleistocene midden from Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, show that blue spruce, limber pine, Douglas fir, dwarf juniper, and Rocky Mountain juniper expanded at least down to 1770 m elevation Neither Colorado pinyon nor ponderosa pine was found as macrofossils in the middens. Artemisia pollen percentages are high in the terminal Pleistocene midden, as they are in the Chuska Mountain pollen sequence, suggesting regional dominance by sagebrush steppe. Of 38 taxa identified, only 3 are shared by middens dated 11,900 and 3120 yr B.P. from Canyon de Chelly, indicating a nearly complete turnover in the flora between the late Pleistocene and late Holocene. Although corn was previously thought to have been introduced to the Colorado plateaus after 2200 yr B.P., the midden dated 3120 yr B.P. contains pollen of corn and other indicators of incipient agriculture.

    Description: The Trego Hot Springs tephra bed is a silicic tephra about 23,400 yr old, found at several localities in pluvial lake sediments in northern Nevada, southern Oregon, and northeastern California. It has been characterized petrographically, by the major and minor element chemistry of its glass, and by its stratigraphic position with respect to other tephra layers. At a newly described locality on Squaw Creek, northwest of Gerlach, Nevada, at the north end of the Smoke Creek Desert, Trego Hot Springs tephra has been found in sediments of the Sehoo and Indian Lakes formations. The depositional environments of these sediments show that when the tephra fell, pluvial Lake Lahontan stood between 1256 and 1260 m, and that immediately thereafter the lake rose to at least 1275 m. These data corroborate earlier findings by Benson (Quaternary Research9, 300–318) from radiometric dating of calcareous tufa. However, the Lake Lahontan area has been affected by isostatic subsidence and rebound in response to changing water loads, so that caution is required in the use of lakeshore elevations in correlation.

    Description: The fluorescent dye dilution method for determining the liquid-water content in snow is based on measuring the concentration change of a solution when it is mixed with snow. Samples for analysis can be obtained rapidly and reliably, and, unlike calorimetric or equilibrium-temperature methods, field use requires no on-site data analysis.
