    Notes: Under conditions of degeneracy, sensitivity analysis information such as cost and right-hand-side ranges, which are produced by standard linear programming procedures used in commercial codes, can be misleading. From a managerial perspective, the interpretation of such information can be erroneous. In this paper we present these problems, explain their occurence with elementary examples, and discuss procedures for their resolution.

    Notes: The movement of chloride ion and the movement and degradation of fluometuron in two soils of contrasting texture and structure was predicted with a simulation model which included terms for the degradation of fluometuron as a function of temperature and moisture. The simulated distributions of soil water, chloride ion and fluometuron were compared with the observations reported in a previous paper (Hance, Embling, Hill, Graham-Boyce & Nicholls, 1981), Soil waler contents and fluometuron distribution were simulated reasonably accurately. Movement of chloride to below 30 cm in both soils and degradation of fluometuron in the WRO sandy loam soil were not well simulated. The discrepancies between observed and predicted water contents and chloride distribution show the importance of measuring dynamic as well as static water properties. Therefore refined simulation models may need to account for pore continuity, soil particle movement and mobile and immobile categories of water.

    Notes: Two experiments were carried out to determine whether the differences in intake and feeding value previously shown between two grass cultivars when offered to ruminants as chopped artificially dehydrated (dried) material could also be demonstrated when the grasses were offered in other forms. Two cultivars of tetraploid Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), Sabalan and Tetila, were established in the same field in 1975. In 1976 they were grazed and conserved (two cuts of primary growth) as dried material or as silage.The composition of the herbage selected at pasture and conserved showed higher concentrations of normal detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre in the dry matter for Tetila than for Sabalan, but differences between cultivars in digestibility were small. In both grazing and winter feeding trials differences in voluntary intake between the two cultivars were not significant, but at pasture young beef cattle spent less time grazing and tended to spend more time ruminating on Tetila than Sabalan. There was no measure of animal performance at pasture but liveweight gain was 15% higher for Sabalan than Tetila when both were offered to young beef cattle as the sole feed of dried grass or of silage. The voluntary intakes of the three forms of feed were very similar, which in part reflected a similarity in digestibility. However, gains were lower for calves given silage than those given dried grass. This may have been due to a lower efficiency in the utilization of the nitrogeneous components of silage for tissue growth than those of dried grass.

    Notes: The effects of zinc concentrations up to 400 μM were examined on three photosynthetic electron transport reactions of thylakoids isolated from Pisum sativum L. cv. Meteor. Zinc (400 μM) had no effect on photosystem I mediated electron transport from reduced N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine to methyl viologen, but inhibited uncoupled electron flow from water to methyl viologen by ca 50% and to 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol (DCPIP) by ca 30% at saturating light levels. Zinc inhibition of DCPIP photoreduction was independent of the light intensity to which thylakoids were exposed. Decreasing the photon flux density below 400 μmol m−2 s−1 produced a logarithmic reduction in the zinc-induced inhibition of methyl viologen photoceduction; a stimulation of this reaction was observed below 80 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Increasing light intensity decreased the amount of zinc tightly bound to the thylakoid membranes, but increased the weakly associated zinc which could be removed by washing the membranes with buffer containing Mg2. The results suggest that zinc acts on the photosynthetic electron transport system at two sites. Site 1 is on the oxidizing side of photosystem 2 and the inhibition by zinc is independent of the light intensity. Site 2 is between photosystems 1 and 2 and the electron flow can be positively or negatively affected by zinc depending on the light intensity.

    Notes: The growth of Streptococcus faecalis var liquefaciens caused the separation of egg yolk into upper and lower layers. Ultrastructure studies using transmission election microscopy showed that the upper layer was mostly low density fraction (LDF) with few electron dense particles. In contrast, the lower layer was mostly high density fraction (HDF). The separation factor caused aggregation of the HDF and openness of the structure of the matrix. The extent of incubation had a pronounced effect on the ultrastructure. Freeze-thaw treatment produced greater aggregation of HDF and more disruption of the LDF matrix, particularly in the lower layer.

    Notes: Precooked, frozen omelets were analyzed for moisture loss, expressible moisture, shear-force, and sensory evaluation to determine water-holding capacity and- textural acceptability. Addition of 0.1% xanthan gum, application of moist heat in cooking, and cryogenic freezing with liquid carbon dioxide or nitrogen minimized moisture loss and shear force. Sodium. carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), pre-gelatinized tapioca starch and sodium tripolyphosphate additives performed satisfactorily, but omelets containing xanthan gum were consistently rated highest in sensory evaluation of several treatments, including fresh and untreated control omelets. Steaming omelets for five minutes combined with cryogenic freezing produced a desirable- omelet, requiring no additives. Steamed omelets were rated comparable to baked omelets in most sensory parameters.

    Notes: Aerobic plate counts on Plate Count Agar at 25°C were used to determine the time required to reach a microbial spoilage level of 1.0 × 107 C.F.U./g, for mechanically deboned chicken meat, minced fish and chicken sausage stored at 2°C. The storage times were 5, 8 and 9 days, respectively. Addition of citric acid (0.2%), ascorbic acid (0.2%) or lauricidin (250 ppm) alone extended the shelf-life by 0–2 days. The combination of lauricidin and citric acid or lauricidin and ascorbic acid extended the time required to reach a microbial spoilage level for mechanically deboned chicken meat by as much as 7 days, minced fish by as much 4 days and chicken sausage by 8 days.
