Notes: Acetyl sulfate was used as sulfonating agent for the sulfonation of cis-1,4-polyisoprene. IR and NMR spectra showed that the sulfonation was accompanied by extensive cyclization. A series of DSC and loss tangent studies of both the sodium salts and the methyl esters was undertaken. It was found that cyclization exerts a profound influence on the micrbrownian segmental motion of the hydrocarbon matrix and is the dominant factor in raising the glass transition temperatures. However, the differences in the mechanical properties between salts and esters suggest that the presence of ions does influence the melt viscosities and shear moduli of the sulfonated cyclized rubbers; this influence can be minimized by esterification or water absorption. It is seen that the ionic effects in these materials are quite typical of those encountered in a wide range of other ionomers.

Notes: Specific heat capacity measurements were made in a differential scanning calorimeter on a series of eight crosslinked epoxy/diamine polymers over a range of temperatures chosen, for each polymer, to include the glass transition. The tabular data at 5°C intervals was then fitted to a five-parameter empirical equation that represents the data with a deviation less than the experimental uncertainty of the measurements. The measured change in specific heat at the glass transition was an average of 1.9 cal/mol°C for each bead in the polymer repeat unit compared with 2.6 cal/mol°C bead found by Wunderlich for linear polymers. The measurements were then analyzed in terms of the molecular components of the polymers, assuming that the specific heat contribution of each component is independent of its neighbors, i.e., that specific heat is an additive property. In calculating empirical component values as a function of temperature, the polymer specific heats should be plotted as a function of T-Tg rather than T alone. In this manner, component specific heats as functions of T-Tg were determined over a range from the glassy to the rubbery state.

Notes: The poly(tetra peptide), H- (L·Val1-L·Pro2-Gly3-Gly4)n-L·Val-OMe, which is a recurring sequence in tropoelastin the precursor protein of the elastic fiber, has been irradiation crosslinked to produce an elastomeric material with limited strength. When a material such as a Dacron fabric is impregnated by the coacervate phase of the poly(tetra peptide) prior to irradiation crosslinking at 50 Mrad, the crosslinked product exhibits stress-strain curves with good elastomeric properties and high strength. In addition to the stress-strain curves, the material is characterized by scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: The polarized Raman spectra in the region 0-400 cm-1 of oriented single crystals of La2(SO4)3.9H2O and La2(SO4)3. 9D2O have been recorded between 14 and 297 K. The behaviour of the external modes is analysed in order to elucidate the role of the hydrogen-bonds and the lanthanum-oxygen interactions in the order-disorder transition observed at approximately 170 K. Large changes in the shape and intensities of the external bands with temperature (not detected in the region of internal vibration of the spectrum) have been observed.

Notes: Raman intensity measurements have been made of cadmium thiocyanate aqueous solutions containing various ratios of total cadmium to total thioeyanate. Both Job and mole-ratio methods indicated existence of a distinct complex species with a cadmium to thiocyanate ratio from 1 to 4. All average ligand number values obtained from three different series of experiments lie on the same curve, meaning that only mononuclear species are formed. Four overall stability constants have been calculated. The spectra are consistent with mononuclear complexes in solution, some having SCN- attached to the metal through the sulphur, others through the nitrogen. A band observed at 2132 cm-1 was assigned to the Cd(SCN)+ complex while bands observed at 2102 and 784 cm-1 were attributed to higher members of the stepwise Cd(NCS)n2-n series. The spectra of solid Cd(SCN)2 were in accord with a bridged thiocyanate structure. Assignments were supported by x-ray structural studies.
