    Description: Detailed calculations are reported of the oscillator strengths of 21 spin-forbidden lines of C II, C III, N I, N II, N III, O I, O II, Al II, and Si III, including 10 lines arising from seven ground levels. All 21 lines lie in the region from 1160 to 2670 A, and the oscillator strengths probably are accurate typically to + or - 50%. These weak lines are particularly important in determining accurate elemental abundances in the interstellar gas.

    Description: Numerical calculations of X-ray and UV emission from accreting nonmagnetic degenerate dwarfs are reported, which span the entire range of accretion rates and stellar masses. Calculations include the effects of bremsstrahlung, Compton cooling, radiation pressure, albedo of the stellar surface, Compton degradation and free-free abscription of the X-ray spectrum by the accreting matter. Maximum X-ray luminosity for degenerate dwarfs undergoing spherical accretion is found to be 2.2 x 10 to the 36th ergs/s, which is little changed if accretion occurs radially over only a fraction of the stellar surface, so that the emitted radiation escapes without significant scattering. The temperature characterizing the X-ray spectra produced by degenerate dwarfs strongly depends on the stellar mass and the accretion rate, and it is suggested that the correlation between spectral temperature and luminosity is an important signature of degenerate X-ray sources.

    Description: UV spectra in the wavelength interval 1170-1270 A are presented for 53 early-type stars ranging in spectral type from O6.5 V to B2.5 IV. The sample includes four Wolf-Rayet stars, seven known Oe-Be stars, and six galactic halo OB stars. A qualitative analysis of the stellar N v doublet reveals that: (1) N v is present in all stars hotter and more luminous than type B0 for the main sequence, B1 for giants, and B2 for supergiants; (2) shell components of N v and an unidentified absorption feature at 1230 A are present in about half of the stars; (3) the column density of N v is well correlated with bolometric luminosity over the spectral range O6 to B2; and (4) the ratio of emission to absorption equivalent width is a factor of 2 smaller in the main sequence stars than in supergiants, which suggests that the wind structure changes as a star evolves. For several stars, this ratio is too small to be explained by traditional wind models.

    Description: Galactic mass loss due to gas production by an evolving stellar population and removal due to supernovae or some other energy source can alter the size of a galaxy over a long time through the adiabatic invariants of the orbits. Numerical and analytic results show that if the mass profile changes homologously, the scale size of the galaxy does also. Under conventional assumptions about galaxy age and initial mass function, this bloating is smaller than the differences between open and flat cosmologies at z = 0.5. If, however, some elliptical galaxies maintain star formation until recent epochs and then lose a (correspondingly) larger fraction of their mass, the effect may be important. It may also be important in decreasing the size of cD galaxies as a result of gas accretion.

    Description: The solid state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory was used to measure the 0.6-4.5 keV X-ray spectra of six prominent supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud, namely, N132D, N63A, N49, 0525-66.0, N157B, and 0540-69.3. Thermal emission is detected from the first four remnants and is similar in nature to that observed from young galactic SNRs. In contrast, N157B and 0540-69.3 have featureless X-ray spectra which are well described by power-law models. The present data support a synchrotron origin for the X-rays from N157B and 0540-69.3, although an alternative emission mechanism is considered for the latter object.

    Description: Representative profiles of He I 10830 A in 65 early-type (O6-A1) stars over a wide range of luminosity are presented. The atlas scans were obtained using the Vaughan Fabry-Perot interferometer on the C. E. K. Mees 0.6 m and KPNO 0.9 m telescopes and usually cover a range of plus or minus 15 A at 1 A resolution with sampling distances between 0.5 A and 2 A depending on the photometer integration time required to reach reasonable Poisson counting statistics. The majority of the scans show very shallow, broad features which do not agree with plane-parallel NLTE model atmosphere calculations of the 10830 line by Auer and Mihalas (1972). Difficulties connected with previous theoretical studies of this line are briefly discussed, and suggestions for possible future modifications to the theory are made.

    Description: A review is presented of the astrophysical reasoning that links supernovae to the origin of the solar system. Topics examined concerning the supernova connections include the abundances of the nuclides at the time the solar system formed, the collapse of a solar cloud by supernova triggering, the origins of isotopic anomalies in solar system samples, and the sputtering of interstellar dust with the attendant chemical and isotopic evolution of the interstellar medium. The controversies surrounding each of these topics are critically examined, focusing on the issues arising from the discovery of the isotopic anomalies in meteorites.

    Description: Narrow interstellar absorption lines of S II 1259.52, Si II 1260.42, and Fe II 1608.46 due to gas in the disk and the halo of the Galaxy have been detected in the spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 509 with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. This gas is also seen at higher resolution in the Ca II and Na I absorption lines in two components at LSR velocities of +6 and +62 km/s. In addition, narrow Ly-alpha and C IV absorption near the Seyfert redshift seem to be present in the spectrum. Si II 1260.42 absorption from the galactic disk and from the Magellanic Stream or the halo of the SMC have been detected with the IUE in the spectrum of Fairall 9. The observations of these two objects when combined with existing results are shown to be consistent with a corotating galactic halo having a height of less than 10 kpc at the sun.

    Description: The potential of a proposed spacecraft mission, called Starprobe, for testing general relativity and providing information on the interior structure and dynamics of the sun is investigated. Parametric, gravitational perturbation terms are derived which represent relativistic effects and effects due to spatial and temporal variations in the solar potential at a given radial distance. A covariance analysis based on Kalman filtering theory predicts the accuracies with which the free parameters in the perturbation terms can be estimated with radio metric tracking data through the process of trajectory reconstruction. It is concluded that Starprobe can contribute significant information on both the nature of gravitation and the structure and dynamics of the solar interior.
