Notes: Abstract Measurements of the binding of ligand to receptors that are macromolecules, either free or components of biomembranes, often show deviation from what is expected of a simple reaction described by an association and a dissociation rate constant. A more versatile model and more discriminating experiments are required for a satisfactory explanation. This paper is based on a general model of the binding reaction in which the rate constants and equilibrium constant are dependent upon occupancy of receptors. The analysis of the model leads to three kinds of experiments: (1) equilibrium measurements which permit quantitative determination of a dissociation equilibrium parameter as a function of receptor occupancy; (2) measurements prior to equilibrium which yield the same information; and (3) measurements prior to equilibrium which reveal quantitatively the dependence of both association and dissociation rate parameters separately, on occupancy.

Notes: Abstract Natural graphite flakes (80 wt%), with polypropylene (20 wt%) as a binder, constitute a practical and non-expensive graphite electrode of high crystallinity ‘CPP’. Galvanostatic cycling of these electrodes with current densities in the range 0.3–30 mA cm−2 (charging time 5–120 min) has been investigated in aqueous acids (12, 20 and 36 mol dm−3 HF, 6 and 12 mol dm−3 H2SO4, 4 mol dm−3 HClO4). The anion of the acid is anodically intercalated and cathodically de-intercalated. In spite of the high water concentrations, quantitative current efficiencies have been obtained. From variation of the rest times after charging, a corrosion current density of less than 0.03 mA cm−2 (j ch=3 mA cm−2) has been derived. The overvoltage during charge and discharge is typically about 0.1 V. The potential at the start of the charging process coincides with the intercalation potential defined previously. A strong electrode formation effect is observed upon cycling. The electrode is initially smooth and non-porous; it acquires a high surface roughness after a few cycles, which is then stable. The initial charging curves increase witht 1/2, while the charging curve after electrode formation is linear. Both clearly indicate a linear relationship between surface concentration of intercalated anions and potential. This agrees with our previous finding of linear dependence with respect to acid concentration in the solution.

Notes: Abstract We describe visual observations of a white light flare which displayed a pink color in a part of the flare which covered a sunspot umbra. We then show that visible pink tint, if attributable to strong Hα emission, requires a minimum equivalent emission line width of approximately 140 A, or three times larger than in any flare previously measured. Such extreme line broadening might be interpreted to result from flare penetration to unusually high chromospheric densities (≳ 1014 cm−3), or from anomalous Stark broadening due to turbulent electric fields in an unstable plasma (Spicer and Davis, 1975) at lower density.

Notes: Summary Four visible markers, including a newly isolated one, have been cytologically mapped on the second chromosome ofDrosophila hydei. Both the frequency of recombination and the amount of DNA between these markers have been determined. From these data the coefficient of exchange has been calculated.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The characteristics of converters with natural commutation on the d.c. side are described using the example of a two pulse bridge connection. This type of converters was not evaluated very largely in the past compared to the converters with natural commutation on the a.c. side. In this paper the characteristics of the direct current and the commutation procedure are evaluated. This includes calculating the angle of overlap. The advantagous behaviour of this type of converters is shown when operating in the inverter mode. The equation of the angle of advance is derived. This equation is compared to that of the converter using natural commutation on the a.c. side. The influence of inductances in the commutation circuits on the average value of the direct current is shown. Some systematic remarks are made on single-way connections and double-way connections of converters using natural commutation on the d.c. side.

Notes: Abstract Recognition of AeEα Ia antigens at the functional level was investigated using T-cell clones. The reactivities of an alloreactive and an antigen-reactive clone, both of which recognized AeEα Ia molecules, were compared on a panel of stimulator/antigen-presenting cells of various genotypes. The two clones recognized all tested A e b E α x Ia molecules, where x is a haplotype capable of expressing an Ia.7-bearing Eα polypeptide. Ia antigen recognition by either clone could be inhibited by the monoclonal antibody Y-17, which recognizes a combinatorial serologic determinant on certain AeEα molecules. There were no differences in the recognition of Ia by the alloreactive versus the antigen-reactive clone, suggesting that Ia antigens are recognized by the two clones in a fundamentally similar way. The recognition of these various Ia molecules by the two cloned T-cell lines provides evidence that the Eα polypeptides from H-2 haplotypes k, d, r, and u are functionally indistinguishable.

Notes: Summary Deletion and point mutants defective in the glpT-dependent sn-glycerol-3-phosphate transport system were isolated and located on the Escherichia coli chromosome. They mapped in glpT in the clockwise order gyrA, glpA, glpT at around 48 min on the Escherichia coli linkage map. The mutations within glpT were ordered by deletion mapping, three factor crosses, and by crosses involving λ transducing bacteriophages carrying glpT-lac operon fusions. Results obtained using these fusion phages indicated that glpT is transcribed in the counterclockwise direction on the E. coli linkage map. Complementation analysis using these mutants revealed only one complementation group. Thus, one gene is necessary and sufficient for the proton motive force-dependent sn-glycerol-3-phosphate transport system.
