    Notes: Systematic studies were performed on interpolymer complex formation between Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in THF-water mixtures of different compositions. Viscosity behaviour during complex formation in mixed solvents was found to be entirely different from that observed by other workers in aqueous and in pure organic solvents. The result are interpreted in terms of, (a) preferential solvation of the polymer, (b) Probable change in conformation of the polyelectrolyte moleculer. (c) association of complex molecules in a medium of low dielectric constant, and (d) expected disordering of bound water molecules around PEO by THF. Irrespective of solvent composition, interpolymer complex of PAA and PEO was always found to have 1:1 unit mole ratio.

    Notes: The anionic polymerization of 1,3 and 1,4-diisopropenylbenzene (DIB) was found to be characterized by a rather low ceiling temperature and by rather strong differences in reactivity between the two double bonds. At low degrees of conversion the polymers formed are essentially linear and carry one pendant double bond per monomeric unit. Branching and crosslinking can occur only at higher conversion. 1,3-DIB can be copolymerized anionically with α-methylstyrene. Grafting reactions were carried out on polymer backbones with pendant unsaturated groups, using two different pathways. The occurence of coupling reaction can be avoided by a proper choice of experimental conditions.

    Notes: Redox of radical telomerizations of methyl 10-undecenoate (1) with different telogens such as CCl4, CCl3Br, CCl3CF3, HPO (OEt)P2 or different adducts of CCI4, on vinylidene chloride and chlorotrifluoroethylene, were studied. Chemical transformation of the end of the chains led to the corresponding difunctional compounds. Starting with these last compounds, polycondensation reactions were carried out.

    Notes: The preferential solvation of poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(sodium methacrylate) in waterdioxane mixtures was investigated by means of specific refractive index increment measurements on dialysed and undialysed solutions. The correlation with the solvent-induced conformational transition of poly(methacrylic acid) was also studied. Potentiometric titrations indicate that this transition occurs at around 25-30 vol.-% of dioxane. Comparison with previous results on poly(acrylic acid) and poly(sodium acrylate) in the same solvent system and on poly(methacrylic acid) in water-2-chloroethanol mixtures, shows differences in the mode of solvation of the compact conformation. It is suggested that this may be dependent on the existence of water-organic solvent specific interactions such as the formation of a water-dioxane hydrogen-bonded complex.

    Notes: p-Trimethylsilylstyrene was found to be polymerisable anionically. When the reaction is carried out at low temperature in THF as solvent the polymer - poly(p-trimethylsilylstyrene) - is obtained in a quantitative yield and exhibits a low polydispersity. The glass transition temperature, viscosity-molecular weight relationships, and 1H and 13C NMR spectra were investigated in order to compare the influence of the trimethylsilyl group located at the benzene nucleus with respect to polystyrene and some other p-subtituted polystyrenes. The presence of the trimethylsilyl group in para position of the aromatic nucleus results in an increase of the rigidity of the polymer chain and in an increase of the glass transition temperature.

    Notes: The microstructure of poly(α-acetoxystyrene), prepared from α-acetoxystyrene by bulk thermal polymerization, was studied by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Anomalies observed in the NMR spectra could be ascribed to fragmentations with formation of benzoxy and acetoxy radicals followed by re-initiation. The thermal degradation of the polymer, resulting in the formation of polyphenylacetylene, rules out certain types of transfer. α-Acetoxystyrene was copolymerized with styrene or substituted styrenes and the NMR study (1H and 13C) was limited to α-acetoxystyrene. The composition of the copolymer could be ascertained by means of the resonances of the quaternary carbons of the aromatic cycle. The copolymers were characterized by viscometry, GPC, and thermal degradation. Their compositions, except that of poly(α-acetoxystyrene-co-styrene) were determined by elemental analysis.

    Description / Table of Contents: The dielectric behaviour of α-acetoxystyrene/styrene copolymers has been studied and the influence of polar substituents on the dielectric constant was investigated over a wide temperature and frequency range. A correlation of ∊′ with the polarity of the copolymer chains was established. Some of these copolymers could be usable in the capacitor industry.
    Notes: Cette étude a pour objectif général l'examen de divers copolymères à propriétés diélectriques améliorées. Elle concerne plus particulièrement la modification de comportement électrique apportée par l'introduction de groupements fortement polarisables sur des copolymères α-acétoxystyrène/styrène, les groupes polaires étant portés par le styrène. La synthèse et la caractérisation physicochimique de ces poly-mères réalisées précédemment permettent une corrélation structure-propriétés. L'examen des caractéristiques électriques (constante diélectrique, tangente d'angle de perte) a été effectué dans un large domaine de températures et de fréquences et a conduit à sélectionner des matériaux filmogènes susceptibles de convenir pour la réalisation de condensateurs.

    Notes: Rheological and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements show that typical pressure sensitive adhesives prepared from block polymers of butadiene or isoprene with styrene maintain the domain structure of the block polymer well beyond the polystyrene domain Tg, but form homogeneous melts above a critical temperature, Tc. For the examples investigated, Tc lies some 20°C below the usual hot melt processing temperature. The extremely high resistance to creep of the adhesives at service temperatures is explained as being the result of viscous flow with the domain structure in a state of dynamic equilibrium, in which polystyrene blocks are detached from domains and reattached to others. A transition between nonequilibrium and equilibrium domain structures is revealed clearly by SAXS for one of the block polymers used in this work.

    Notes: The assignment of all ring carbons of 37 derivatives of 1,3,4-oxa- or thiadiazoles and of seven isosydnones is described. In some cases, 13C-labelled compounds were used. The analysis of substituent effects and the calculation of charge densities of some of the derivatives suggest that the two nitrogen atoms form a protective screen against electron perturbation and play the role of an ‘electronic buffer’. A notable variation of chemical shifts could be observed only when oxygen is replaced by sulphur.
