Notes: Abstract Based on experimental work on the ontogeny of the electroretinogram circadian rhythm in crayfish, we present a mathematical model simulating changes in both frequency and amplitude of the electroretinogram oscillation during several developmental stages until shortly before the adult age. Simultaneously, we propose a hypothetical oscillation in the hormonal release whose frequency is imposed on the electroretinogram oscillation. The model consists of two coupled nonlinear oscillators in which a dynamical response is obtained mainly through an Andronov-Hopf bifurcation. Through the construction of the model, a biological hypothesis about the essential elements underlying the ERG circadian rhythm and their interrelations is formulated and discussed.

Notes: Abstract A general model of zymogen activation is proposed and explicit kinetic equations for the time courses of the various species and products involved are given. These equations are valid for the whole course of the reaction and therefore for both the transient phase and the steady state. This model is sufficiently general to include mechanisms possessing one or more steps of zymogen activation besides possible steps of inhibition (reversible or irreversible) or inactivation.

Notes: Summary Previous ultrafiltration studies indicated that up to one-half of the calcium and two-thirds of the phosphate in human salivary secretions may be bound by salivary proteins. Since this binding is an important variable in determining the extent of salivary supersaturation with respect to calcium phosphate salts, and since the amount of binding reported is surprisingly large, calcium and phosphate ion-binding by salivary macromolecules has been reexamined. From experiments using equilibrium dialysis, it was found that (1) the fraction of salivary calcium involved in macromolecular complexes ranges from a few percent for unstimulated secretions, to no more than about 10% for stimulated glandular salivas, and (2) salivary proteins do not bind phosphate ions to any significant extent. These findings, and experiments using an improved ultrafiltration membrane, indicate that the earlier results were artifacts of the ultrafiltration technique. Fractionation of salivary proteins, followed by equilibrium dialysis measurements, showed that the anionic proline-rich proteins and a basic proline-rich glycoprotein are responsible for most of the calcium binding now observed. The finding that macromolecular complexes of salivary calcium and phosphate have been overestimated in the past, leads to the conclusion that salivary calcium and phosphate ion activities in stimulated salivary secretions may be up to 50 to 100% higher than previously thought. Revised values were therefore used to recalculate the degree of salivary supersaturation with respect to calcium phosphate salts. The results indicate that stimulated salivary secretions are supersaturated with respect to dicalcium phosphate dihydrate; this is a substantially greater degree of supersaturation than previously reported.

Notes: Abstract We provide expressions to find recursively any 2-cochain of each of two invariant formal differentiable deformations of C ∞(S 2), here called * and *″. They are obtained in ways similar to those followed to obtain, respectively, Wick's and Moyal's deformations on ℂ n . We provide the expression for the corresponding *-exponential, on Poincaré's disk and on S 2, and its proper spectral decomposition. No proofs are given in this letter. For detailed proofs in the case of D 1 (ℂ), see [1]. The proofs for the case S 2 follow the same pattern; however, [1] does not contain the spectral analysis given here.

Notes: Summary N,N,N',N'-ethylene diamine tetra (methylene phosphonic acid)—EDITEMPA—was highly effective in reducing dental calculus formation in beagle dogs when applied topically as a 1% solution or in a mouth rinse. A dose-response study in 40 beagles for 12 weeks with dentifrices containing 1, 2, 2.75, and 2.75% EDITEMPA+0.1% NaF gave a significant (α=0.05) reduction in calculus formation. Based on these results, it was also concluded that 0.1% NaF did not affect the anticalculus activity of 2.75% EDITEMPA. The effect of EDITEMPA dentifrice on dental caries in rats was also studied. A dentifrice containing 1.69% EDITEMPA significantly (α〈0.01) reduced smooth and fissure caries in rats when applied topically. Collectively, the data suggested that EDITEMPA was an effective anticalculus agent and that it did not damage developing enamel in vivo.

Notes: Summary Cyclic AMP binding to Mucor rouxii protein kinase holoenzyme and free regulatory subunit was measured by the classical membrane filtration technique and by equilibrium dialysis. The results obtained demonstrate that the filtration method can be used without loss of any cyclic AMP binding site. Both methods unambiguously demonstrate that the number of molecules of cyclic AMP bound to the holoenzyme are half of those bound to the regulatory subunit. This result suggests that unshielding of new cyclic AMP binding sites occurs upon dissociation of the ternary complex holoenzyme-cyclic AMP.

Notes: Summary Basal glucose utilization by isolated rat adipocytes have been found to be increased ten times in the presence of certain preparations of albumin. In these conditions the effects of several adrenergic agonists and related compounds on glucose oxidation, lipolysis and triacylglycerol synthesis in isolated fat cells have been studied. Oxidation of D(1-14C) glucose in rat adipocytes was almost completely inhibited by norepinephrine and isoproterenol when added to incubated fat cells. Agents able to modify intracellular AMP cyclic levels by different mechanisms display a similar ability to imitate the effect of lipolytic agents. The inhibition of glucose oxidation due to norepinephrine and isoproterenol is partially reverted by propanolol. Under the same conditions in which norepinephrine and isoproterenol markedly reduced glucose conversion to 14CO2, they stimulated lipolysis and triacylglycerol synthesis and in this case propanolol also reverted those actions. However, in these experimental conditions, norepinephrine and isoproterenol did not raise CAMP levels 10 min after hormone addition. It is concluded from these data that glucose oxidation through hexose monophosphate shunt, activation of lipolysis and triacylglycerol synthesis in isolated rat fat cells by lipolytic agents occurs by a mechanism(s) that depend(s) on intracellular free fatty acids levels.

Notes: Abstract Escherichia coli was grown at 37°C with increasing cholesterol concentrations in the growth medium. Under these conditions, it was shown that neither the phospholipid species nor the fatty acid composition were affected by the incorporation of cholesterol. On the other hand, the doubling time (td) was increased; two membrane-bound enzymes, (Ca++)-ATPase and D-lactate-dehydrogenase, were modified in the temperature-dependence activities, and the (Ca±±)-ATPase changed its Hill coefficient for the inhibition by Na+. This last parameter was the most sensitive in detecting very low cholesterol incorporations to the cytoplasmic membranes.
