    Notes: Abstract We have tested the hypothesis that a plant may detect the presence of a neighboug42r, before being shaded by it, through the perception of the spectral composition of reflected sunlight. Within seedling canopies the red: far-red ratio (R: FR) of the light received by a sensor with a geometry approximating that of a stem was significantly reduced by selective reflection. This effect was observed before any reduction in the amount of photosynthetic light energy received by an individual seedling could be detected. Small green fences of grass, east-west orientated, altered the spectral distribution of the light on the north (sunlit) side of them. Fully illuminated seedlings of Sinapis alba grown on the north side of these green fences produced longer internodes and had a lower leaf: stem dry weight ratio than those grown in front of fences of bleached grasses. A similar redistribution of growth was elicited in seedlings of Chenopodium album, Datura ferox and S. alba growing in full sunlight by exposing plants to additional small quantities of far-red reflected by selective mirrors. These results suggest that the change in the R: FR ratio serves as an early warning signal of oncoming competition.

    Notes: Abstract Changes in the phytochrome status at the end of the daily photosynthetic period result in several plant responses. To understand the causal relations among these responses it is useful to investigate species or experimental conditions where the most common correlations among responses are broken. A step in this direction is presented here with Petunia axilaris, where FR-treated plants showed low chlorophyll content and erect leaves, but- contrary to other species-higher leaf area and plant dry weight. Differences in area expansion were related to the late phase of leaf growth and were due, at least in part, to larger cells in FR-treated plants. Effects on length/width ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilation rate, shoot/root ratio and leaf number were small or non-existent. It is suggested that the lower chlorophyll content in FR-treated plants was not a consequence of scarcity of assimilates.

    Notes: The emergence, survival, seed production and seed dispersal of Datura ferox was studied in soybean fields in 1982–1983 and 1984–1985. Most seedling emergence occurred within one month of crop sowing. Later germination, associated with inter-row cultivation, represented 4–26% of the total seedlings, and none survived to seed production. Only 5% of the first cohort in 1982–1983, and 7% in 1984–1985, survived to seed production; it was independent of initial density. Although weed density was greatly reduced by control measures, negative relationships were observed between peak seedling density and plant height, stem diameter, number of ramifications, number of reproductive structures and seed production per plant. Only a small proportion of seeds (about 1%) were shed prior to soybean harvest. Combine harvesters collected more than 90% of capsules, but between 7% and 40% of the seeds were returned to the field. Seed viability was unaffected by passing through the machine. The patterns of seed dispersal varied depending on the design of the combine harvester. Two models shed seeds between 0 m and 21 m from their source, but another shed seeds between 0 m and 98 m. Calculations, based in life history parameters, showed that weed seed production would increase more rapidly if the seeds were dispersed during crop harvesting than if they arc not, even when the return of seeds to the soil by the combine is not large.

    Notes: Whole flour air classification protein and starchy fractions of raw amaranth seeds were employed in mixtures with commercial lime-treated corn flour (MINSA) or corn meal, as in the traditional method, to prepare tortillas. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) and net protein rate (NPR), were improved with no changes in the sensory characteristics. Lysine content decreased slightly in the processed samples. Improvement in the tortilla's protein (9.2 to 12%), fat (1.8 to 4.9%), phosphorus (231–370 mg%), and linoleic acid (41–56.8%) content was achieved. Each substituted flour demonstrated a unique sensory pattern, and amaranth flour and fractions showed no significant differences in the substitutions, tested principally for appearance, aroma, texture, flavour and aftertaste.

    Notes: Heat inactivation of polyphenoloxidase (PPO) in sultana grapes between 83° and 98°C followed zero order kinetics with an activation energy of 13.7–16.7 kcal/mol. A high correlation (r = 0.973) was found between the residual PPO activity and darkness of the raisins (Hun-terlab L value) after drying at 50°C. Reaction rate for enzymatic browning increased with higher water activities while non-enzymatic browning showed the typical bell-shaped curve with a maximum around 0.8. Light-colored raisins were obtained without the use of SO2 by pretreating the grapes with a 2 min dip in 93°C water that inactivated PPO and improved mass transfer through the skin. This latter effect was compared to that of other treatments such as ethyl oleate and caustic soda by drying studies and scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: The effects of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] on endogenous in-dole-3-acetic acid (IAA) level, IAA oxidase activity, and possible interactions with alterations in phenolic metabolism have been examined in yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) plants. IAA was quantified by flame ionization detector gas-chroma-tography, phenols were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography and the auxin protection and the IAA oxidase activities were determined spectrophoto-metrically and/or polarographically. A significant increase in IAA content was recorded after glyphosate treatment. No IAA oxidase activity was detected in control and treated tissues. Auxin protection activity and gentisic acid were present in all extracts assayed, and their concentrations increased as the rate of glyphosate application increased. Addition of gentisic acid to an extract of control plants increased the auxin protection detected. These findings indicate that the high levels of free IAA in yellow nutsedge leaves after glyphosate application are due to the inhibition of the IAA oxidase activity by increased levels of the IAA-protecting phenol gentisic acid.

    Notes: The action of the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)-glycine] on phenolic metabolism and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL; EC 4.3.1.5) activity was investigated in yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.). Glyphosate caused significant increases in the amount of total soluble hydroxyphenolics in the three fractions studied (neutral, acid and residual). Qualitative and quantitative differences in relation to these fractions and the amount of applied glyphosate were observed. Most of the phenolic compounds which increased after glyphosate treatment were benzoic acids (gentisic. p-OH-benzoic, salicylic and vanillic). Gentisic acid showed the greatest increase in neutral and acid fractions, being twenty- and four-fold, respectively, of the amount found in the control. PAL activity was not affected by the lowest doses of glyphosate (10−4and 10−3M), but a dramatic decrease in PAL activity was observed after 10−2M treatment. These findings, together with the low levels of cinnamic acids measured in treated yellow nutsedge plants, suggest that PAL activity is only marginally involved in glyphosate action. Since the herbicidal action probably takes place at 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-P synthase (EC 2.5.1.19), an alternative pathway to PAL in phenolic biosynthesis should be activated yielding benzoic acids.

Plantarum 69: 517–522.A synthetic auxin 2-(2-methyl-4-chloro)phenoxypropionic acid (MCPP), analogue of 2,4-D, alters maize (Zea mays L. H-30) germination while inducing callus formation. The effect of this auxin on protein synthesis and phosphorylation of the embryonic tissues was explored. Total cytoplasmic proteins were analysed for 14C or 32P incorporation into trichloroacetic acid precipitable material. MCPP significantly stimulated protein synthesis as well as protein phosphorylation. The protein synthesis pattern was highly altered in the presence of MCPP as analysed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Analyses by Sephadex G-100 chromatography and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of phosphorylated proteins indicate that the effect of MCPP on protein phosphorylation was only quantitative.

Five species of fingerling fish, channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, tilapia, Sarotherodon aureus, golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucas, largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides and bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis, were tested to determine their susceptibility to the bacterium, Edwardsiella ictaluri, at 26°C, Channel catfish demonstrated high susceptibility to E. ictaluri as 100% of those fish injected with 1.5 × 103 cells died within 10 days. Tilapia demonstrated slight susceptibility to the pathogen while golden shiner, bighead carp and largemouth bass were not susceptible. E. ictaluri was isolated from a higher percentage of peritoneal cavities, livers and kidneys of channel catfish than of other species. Sequential growth of E. ictaluri in the liver of channel catfish is described.

    Notes: The classification of families of ordered structures, in terms of positions in reciprocal space where two or more symmetry elements of the pair potential intersect at a point, is extended to include general crystal structures. Only a relatively small number of space groups, 24 in all, are shown to be relevant to special-point ordering. The method is illustrated with the study of special-point families for a hexagonal crystal with two atoms per unit cell.
