    Description: Sparse, granular inclusions of early-formed minerals found within the Little Glass Mountain rhyolite flows in northern California are shown to provide a means of characterizing the physical conditions, at depth, beneath the Medicine Lake Highland during the latest phase of volcanic activity. Mineral compositions, in combination with thermodynamic calculations and experiments, suggest crystalization at a pressure of 5,200 bars within a 966-836 C temperature range; implying that mineral segregation and equilibration occurred at a depth of 15-18 km beneath the surface. In addition, mass balance calculations indicate that the Medicine Lake flow is a close approximation to the parental magma for the latest silicic lavas.

    Description: The type and quantity of lunar materials needed to support a space power satellite program was used to define the type and quality of geological information required to certify a site for exploitation. The existing geological, geochemical, and geophysical data are summarized. The difference between these data and the required data for exploitation is used to define program requirements. Most of these requirements involve linear extensions of existing capabilities, fuller utilization of existing data, or expanded use of automated systems.

    Description: Details are given for the construction and operation of a 101.3 KN/sq meter (1 atmosphere) redox control system. A solid ceramic oxygen electrolyte cell is used to monitor the oxygen fugacity in the furnace. The system consists of a vertical quench gas mixing furnace with heads designed for mounting the electrolyte cell and with facilities for inserting and removing the samples, a simplified version of a gas mixing apparatus, and devices for experiments under controlled rates of change of temperature. A thermogravimetric analysis system employing these techniques of redox control and measurement is also described. The calibration and maintenance of the system are discussed.

    Description: Observations of the recurrent nova U Sco during the 1979 outburst are presented, and the spectral evolution is found to differ from that of other recurrent novas. Spectra are dominated by emission lines, and the strong forbidden-line emission characteristic is conspicuously absent. A method to determine masses of nova shells is outlined, and an analysis of the emission lines shows an enrichment in N relative to C and O, and that the nova ejecta are rich in He relative to H. Optical spectra of U Sco obtained following its return to quiescence show predominantly He II emission lines, which suggests an enrichment of the preoutburst gas in He, and thus the presence of a highly evolved companion.

    Description: The thermal vacuum test optimization model developed to provide an approach to the optimization of a test program based on prediction of flight performance with a single flight option in mind is extended to consider reflight as in space shuttle missions. The concept of 'utility', developed under the name of 'availability', is used to follow performance through the various options encountered when the capabilities of reflight and retrievability of space shuttle are available. Also, a 'lost value' model is modified to produce a measure of the probability of a mission's success, achieving a desired utility using a minimal cost test strategy. The resulting matrix of probabilities and their associated costs provides a means for project management to evaluate various test and reflight strategies.

    Description: Design parameters for two large area, low cost solar cells are presented, and electron irradiation testing, thermal alpha testing, and cell processing are discussed. The devices are a 2 ohm-cm base resistivity silicon cell with an evaporated aluminum reflector produced in a dielectric wraparound cell, and a 10 ohm-cm silicon cell with the BSF/BSR combination and a conventional contact system. Both cells are 5.9 x 5.9 cm and require 200 micron thick silicon material due to mission weight constraints. Normalized values for open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and maximum power calculations derived from electron radiation testing are given. In addition, thermal alpha testing values of absorptivity and emittance are included. A pilot cell processing run produced cells averaging 14.4% efficiencies at AMO 28 C. Manufacturing for such cells will be on a mechanized process line, and the area of coverslide application technology must be considered in order to achieve cost effective production.

    Description: An approximately 0.25 scale model of a tandem fan nacelle, designed for a subsonic V/STOL aircraft, was tested in a Lewis wind tunnel. Model variables included long and short aft inlet cowls and the addition of exterior strakes to the short inlet cowl. Inlet pressure recoveries and distortion were measured at pitch angles to 40 deg and at combinations of pitch and yaw to 30 deg. Airspeeds covered a range to 135 knots (69 m/sec). The short aft inlet with added strakes had the best aerodynamic performance and is considered suitable for the intended V/STOL application.
