    Description: A concept for enhanced protection of superalloys consists of adding an oxidation- and diffusion-resistant cermet layer between the superalloy and the outer oxidation-resistant metallic alloy coating. Such a duplex coating was compared with a physical-vapor-deposited (PVD) NiCrAlY coating in cyclic oxidation at 1150 C. The substrate alloy was MA 754 - an oxide-dispersion-strengthened superalloy that is difficult to coat. The duplex coating, applied by plasma spraying, outperformed the PVD coating on the basis of weight change and both macroscopic and metallographic observations.

    Description: Results of observations of 3U 0352 + 30, the source associated with the X Persei system, in the energy range 12-180 keV are reported. The measurements were made on 1978 August 22 with the UCSD/MIT High-Energy X-ray and Low-Energy Gamma-ray Experiment on HEAO 1. Data taken simultaneously in the energy range 2-50 keV indicate that, in addition to a 7 keV thermal bremsstrahlung component, there is a second component of higher energy. It is found that this higher energy component fits a power law of photon index 1.3 (+0.4, -0.5) and is pulsed at the 13.95 minute period of the lower energy component.

    Description: The results of observations of the 38-second pulsar obtained at high X-ray energies (13-180 keV) with the UCSD/MIT instrument aboard HEAO 1 are reported. The results include a measurement of the source location, measurement of the pulse profile, and determination of the average intensity and spectrum during each of three time intervals spanning a baseline of 1 year. The total intensity of the pulsar is seen to vary on a 6-month time scale. The spectrum is hard but, like other X-ray pulsars, steepens at energies above 20 keV.

    Description: Results are presented of HEAO 1 observations of the Perseus cluster from 10 to 150 keV in 1977 August and 1978 February and August. The spectrum exhibits a previously unknown hard (greater than 25 keV) component in addition to the previously known thermal bremsstrahlung emission. The data presented show no significant evidence of variability from 10.5 keV to 93.5 keV, and a comparison of our results with earlier results indicates no strong evidence for variability above 25 keV over a time scale of 4 yr. If the hard-component excess is due to NGC 1275, the data imply a 2-6 keV X-ray luminosity of 1 x 10 to the 44th ergs/s for the galaxy, or about 15% of the total cluster emission from 2 to 6 keV and a 25-40 keV luminosity of 8 x 10 to the 43rd ergs/s.

    Description: A thermal barrier coating system for protecting metal surfaces at high temperature in normally corrosive environments is described. The thermal barrier coating system includes a metal alloy bond coating, the alloy containing nickel, cobalt, iron, or a combination of these metals. The system further includes a corrosion resistant thermal barrier oxide coating containing at least one alkaline earth silicate. The preferred oxides are calcium silicate, barium silicate, magnesium silicate, or combinations of these silicates.

    Description: Recent activities of the Lewis Research Center are reviewed which are directed toward developing materials for rotating hot section components for aircraft gas turbines. Turbine blade materials activities are directed at increasing metal temperatures approximately 100 C compared to current directionally solidified alloys by use of oxide dispersion strengthening or tungsten alloy wire reinforcement of nickel or iron base superalloys. The application of thermal barrier coatings offers a promise of increasing gas temperatures an additional 100 C with current cooling technology. For turbine disk alloys, activities are directed toward reducing the cost of turbine disks by 50 percent through near net shape fabrication of prealloyed powders as well as towards improved performance. In addition, advanced alloy concepts and fabrication methods for dual alloy disks are being studied as having potential for improving the life of future high performance disks and reducing the amount of strategic materials required in these components.
