Notes: Two NQR lines were observed for 35Cl in 2,5-dichloro-4-nitroaniline at room temperature, using a self-quenched super-regenerative spectrometer. Analysis of the Zeeman effect on the two lines using a cylindrical single crystal reveals that the crystal belongs to the monoclinic system. The principal field gradient Z axes enclose an angle of 35° and 28° in the cases of the low and high frequency resonance lines, respectively. The b axis is parallel to 81°, 280°. The unit cell contains either two or a multiple of two molecules. The molecules in the crystal can be arranged into two sets, with the molecular planes in each set being parallel among each other. The angle subtended between the two planes is 159° and each of the planes is inclined to the b axis at an angle of 79.5°. There is an in-plane bending of the two C—Cl bonds by 5.5°. The ionic, single bond and double bond characters of the C—Cl bonds for both chlorines are almost equal, and are in the ratio 24:73:3.

Description: The Maintenance Document is a guide to the PAN AIR software system, a system which computes the subsonic or supersonic linear potential flow about a body of nearly arbitrary shape, using a higher order panel method. The document describes the over-all system and each program module of the system. Sufficient detail is given for program maintenance, updating and modification. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with programming and CDC (Control Data Corporation) computer systems. The PAN AIR system was written in FORTRAN 4 language except for a few COMPASS language subroutines which exist in the PAN AIR library. Structured programming techniques were used to provide code documentation and maintainability. The operating systems accommodated are NOS 1.2, NOS/BE and SCOPE 2.1.3 on the CDC 6600, 7600 and Cyber 175 computing systems. The system is comprised of a data management system, a program library, an execution control module and nine separate FORTRAN technical modules. Each module calculates part of the posed PAN AIR problem. The data base manager is used to communicate between modules and within modules. The technical modules must be run in a prescribed fashion for each PAN AIR problem. In order to ease the problem of supplying the many JCL cards required to execute the modules, a separate module called MEC (Module Execution Control) was created to automatically supply most of the JCL cards. In addition to the MEC generated JCL, there is an additional set of user supplied JCL cards to initiate the JCL sequence stored on the system.

Description: The three-dimensional leeward separation about a 5 deg semi-angle cone at an 11 deg angle of attack was investigated in flight, in the wind tunnel, and by numerical computations. The test conditions were Mach numbers of 0.6, 1.5, and 1.8 at Reynolds numbers between 7 and 10 million based on free-stream conditions and a 30-inch wetted length or surface. The surface conditions measured included mean static and fluctuating pressures; skin friction magnitudes and separation line positions were obtained using obstacle blocks. The mean static pressures from flight and wind tunnel were in good agreement. The computed results gave the same distributions, but were slightly more positive in magnitude. The experimentally measured primary and secondary separation line locations compared closely with computed results. There were substantial differences in level and in trend between the surface root-mean-square pressure fluctuations obtained in flight and in the wind tunnel, due, it is thought, to a relatively high acoustic disturbance level in the tunnel compared with the quiescent conditions in flight.

Notes: Abstract Allozymic variation in proteins encoded by 22 loci was analyzed electrophoretically in 278 individual plants of wild barley,Hordeum spontaneum, the progenitor of cultivated barley, in four 100 meter transects, in Israel, each equally subdivided into basalt and terra rossa soil types. Significant differentiation according to soil was found in 9 alleles. Our results suggest that allozyme polymorphisms in wild barley are at least partly adaptive, and differentiate by edaphic natural selection rather than by stochastic processes, and/or neutrality of allozymic variants.

Notes: The title compounds have been isolated and their structures determined by X-ray crystallography. Their relative stability is discussed in terms of theory and experiment. The endo-adduct is the thermodynamically more stable one.

Notes: Bromination of (-)-4-hydroxy-N-methylmorphinan-6-one (3), prepared from natural morphine, with 1 mol of bromine in acetic acid, afforded the 1-bromo ketone 5. The structure of 5 was assigned by 13C-NMR.spectroscopy, and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis of its hydrobromide salt. It is suggested that monobromination of synthetic (±)-2,4-dihydroxy-N-formylmorphinan-6-one (7) takes in principle a similar course, although the 13C-NMR.spectrum of the primary reaction product 9 could not be measured because of insolubility in commonly used solvents. Monobromination of (-)-4-acetoxy-N-formylmorphinan-6-one (12) of the natural series, and of (±)-2,4-diacetoxy-N-formylmorphinan-6-one (8) of the synthetic series, followed by treatment of the monobrominated ketones with potassium carbonate in methanol resulted in closure of the O-bridge, and afforded after acid hydrolysis, the corresponding 4,5-epoxy-morphinan-6-ones (-)-16 and (±)-17 respectively. This variation of the ring closure reaction represents a novel and convenient method to convert 4-hydroxymorphinan-6-ones into their corresponding 4,5-epoxymorphinan-6-ones, without involving aromatic bromination and with only 1 mol of bromine.

Notes: Silicon-Nitrogen Bonds. XXXIX. Kinetic Studies on the Spontaneous Hydrolysis, Alcoholysis, and Phenolysis of SilylaminesIt could be shown by polarimetric and DC-metric methods that hydrolysis, alcoholysis, and phenolysis of silylamines are of second order and lead to equilibria. The rate of equilibrium establishment is determined by the position of a preceding protonation equilibrium and by steric effects. The position of the equilibria depends on inductive and steric effects. The enthalpy of activation for the ethanolysis of Me3SiNHPh was determined to 27,2 kJ/mol and the entropy of activation to -231 J/K · mol. The mechanism of the reactions is given.

Notes: Operational characteristics have been determined for fused silica capillary column (FSCC) GC/MS as applied to “extractable” priority polutants. Chromatographic data show excellent relative retention time (RRT) intralaboratory precision and interlaboratory accuracy when multiple internal standards are empolyed. Potential chromatographic problems, such as column overload and “double peaking”, are addressed. Response factor relative standard deviations (RSD) at 50 ng for most of the extractable priority pollutants over the long term indicated precise determination (i.e. RSD generally ≤ 10%). Linearity was demonstrated over two orders of magnitude for FSCC GC/MS analysis of compounds with relatively low and high RF (response factor) values. Potential quantitative problems, such as saturation, are discussed. For certain aromatic priority pollutants interlaboratory RF agreement was observed. This was noted as perhaps the most important property of FSCC GC/MS analysis when the multiple internal standard approach is utilized. Determinations of extractable priority pollutants are directly compared for paced column GC/MS and FSCC GC/MS analysis of separate and composited extracts. For six extracts analyzed in triplicate, the latter configuration was shown to produce more consistent results. In view of the superior analysis logistics of composite extract FSCC GC/MS analysis, this approach was established as the preferred method for the analysis of priority pollutants classified as extractable.
