    Notes: The stoichiometry of the salt-linkage formations of nonporous and porous silica particles with trimethylammonium glycol chitosan iodide (TGCI) was investigated by comparing the results of colloid titration and adsorption experiments with those of potentiometric titrations. The surface charge (Q) of colloidal silica as function of pH was evaluated by means of the colloid titration with TGCI. On the other hand, the density (D) of ≡ SiO⊖ groups of silica gel at different pH was also evaluated by the adsorption experiment of TGCI. These results obtained were compared with the Q vs. pH and D vs. pH curves which were obtained by the potentiometric titrations at various ionic strengths for colloidal silica and silica gel, respectively. It was concluded that the ≡ SiO⊖ groups on the surface of nonporous colloid silica form the salt-linkages stoichiometrically with ⊕N(CH3)3-groups in TGCI, whereas the salt-linkage formation between ⊕N(CH3)3-groups in TGCI and ≡ SiO⊖ groups of silica gel does not follow the stoichiometric relationship, since the salt-linkages of the ≡ SiOominus; groups in the pores of the silica gel could be affected by the steric hindrance of the TGCI chain.

    Notes: The dielectric features of poly(L-glutamic acid) are studied by the Fourier synthesized pseudorandom noise method in a time domain combined with a four-electrode cell. Polymer concentration dependence, the effect of the solvent viscosity, salt effects, and pH dependence are studied concomitantly with measurements of CD. A helix-to-coil transition occurs near pH 5.6 for a salt-free solution; at higher pH values, the polymer has an ionized random-coil conformation, and at lower pH, it has a deionized α-helical conformation. When it is in the ionized random-coil conformation, with the usual features of an electrolytic polymer, the solution shows a relaxation spectrum with a large dielectric increment at low frequencies. In the deionized α-helical state, no distinct relaxation curves are obtained, which does not deny the existence of a permanent peptide dipole. The pH dependence of the dielectric increment does not mainly correspond to the conformational change from helix to coil, but rather corresponds to the change of chain expansion on account of a charge-charge interaction under low ionic strength, which is conceived of by a viscosity measurement.

    Notes: The elution volume of polystyrene or of poly(ethylene glycol) of various molecular weights was measured in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene at 40 or 60°C by means of gel permeation chromatography utilizing columns packed with crosslinked polystyrene gel or porous glass. When the polystyrene gel was used as the column packing, a relationship between log [η]M and the peak elution volume for polystyrene agreed with that for poly(ethylene glycol). Using columns packed with glass, however, the elution volume of polystyrene was smaller than that of poly(ethylene glycol) at the same log [η]M. The results are considered to be attributable to the adsorption of poly(ethylene glycol) onto the glass. The effect of the adsorption on the elution volume was evaluated by assuming a universal calibration for columns containing porous glass; the deviation of the elution volume from the universal calibration curve increased with increase in molecular weight. At lower temperatures, even polystyrene was adsorbed onto the glass. Therefore, to reduce the adsorption of polymers on glass, it is necessary to increase the temperature or use surface treatment when porous glass is used as a GPC column packing.

    Notes: The rheological study for isothermal curing processes of two kinds of epoxy/amine systems made by Rayleigh-Brillouin spectroscopy was compared with torsional braid analysis. The Brillouin shift increased with the increase in the density during the process. The intensity ratio of Rayleigh line to Brillouin lines (LP ratio) increased remarkably in accordance with the onset of gelation measured by extraction. The increase of scattered light suggests that some kind of density fluctuation of the order of the light wavelength takes place prior to the gelation. The longitudinal elastic modulus and the attenuation of sound in the hypersonic region changed monotonically from the start of measurement and almost leveled off after the transition to the glassy state determined by dilatometry. While the relative shear modulus in a low-frequency region (0.1 ∼ 1 Hz) was not sensitive to the onset of gelation, it was markedly affected by the approach to the glassy state.

    Notes: The binding of cyanide ion to Fe(III) in the hemes of bovine methemoglobin and insoluble polyion complex (KPVS-Hb-PDDA complex) prepared by the complexation of the methemoglobin with potassium poly(vinyl alcohol) sulfate and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) was investigated as functions of pH and potassium cyanide concentration by spectrophotometric method and adsorption experiment. The degree of saturation of the cyanide ligand on the heme showed a maximal value at pH range 8-9, whereas this was reduced to zero in the strongly acidic and basic regions, below pH 3.5 and above pH 13.5. These results were in agreement, in a qualitative way, with the theoretical results represented by four equilibrium reactions between methemoglobin and potassium cyanide at different pH and cyanide concentrations. The separation of cyanide ion in Na2B4O7—KH2PO4 buffer solution at pH 9.0 was also investigated by using a KPVS-Hb-PDDA complex column. The cyanide ion in the solution was mostly or entirely bound to the complex until the heme was saturated with cyanide ion, and most of the bound cyanide ion was eluted with 0.1N NaOH solution. These results indicate that KPVS-Hb-PDDA has a function as cyanide ion exchanger and that the exchange reaction is analogous to that for methemoglobin.

    Notes: The free radicals trapped in oriented nylon 6 filaments after γ-irradiation under vacuum at room temperature were studied by ESR spectroscopy. The ESR spectrum measured after irradiation gradually changed to a broad singlet spectrum with decrease in the intensity. The ESR spectrum consisted of radicals with different orientation effects with respect to the outer magnetic field, and saturation effects in reference to microwave power. The simulation of the ESR spectrum from a Gaussian function gave a better fit to the observed spectrum than the calculation from a Lorentzian function. From the resolution of the spectrum from a Gaussian function, the observed spectrum is generated from three kinds of radicals: The relative radical concentration for the first, second, and third radical is about 75%, 6%, and 19% of the total radical concentration, respectively. With regard to the stability of the radicals, the third radical shows a comparatively long lifetime. The first and second radicals show almost identical lifetime, and their concentrations reduce to about 40% of the initial value during the 2 days at room temperature.

    Notes: For the purpose of studying the mechanism of thermal degradation of poly[(tetramethyl-p-silphenylene) Siloxane] (poly TMPS) a series of polymers with silphenylene and siloxane bonds in the main chain were prepared and subjected to thermogravimetry (TG) and pyrolysis study. Analyses of products from poly TMPS degradation (in vacuum at a constant temperature) by gas chromatography (GC), infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that degradation occurs at the silphenylene bonds. The TG curves obtained in He for heating rates of 1,2,2.5,7.5, and 10°C/min were analyzed by the Ozawa method; activation energies of 39 ± 1 and 45 ± 2 kcal/mol were obtained respectively for the initial cleavage of the methyl side group and the later-stage scission of the main-chain silphenylene bond which leads to a major weight loss. The results agree with those obtained for other structurally similar polymers.
