Notes: Abstract The scintillation phenomenon in anodic tantalum oxide has been studied by means of the potential rise during the reoxidation of samples which had undergone previous scintillation for a specified time. The information given by these curves, together with measurements of the dielectric properties, X-ray analysis and observation under the scanning electron microscope, allow two different processes to be distinguished during scintillation. The first stage of the scintillation is mainly characterized by a process of attack and partial healing of the oxide film with the formation of pores and microfissures. The second stage of scintillation is dominated by the process of field crystallization which irreversibly degrades the oxide's dielectric properties. The influence of the anodization parameters, such as current density and nature and concentration of the electrolyte, on the above processes is also investigated.

Notes: Abstract MnO2 samples have been prepared by the pyrolytic decomposition of manganese nitrate in different atmospheres: dry air and air saturated with water vapour. The influence of the atmosphere on the kinetics of the manganese nitrate decomposition and on several physical properties of the resulting MnO2, such as density, grain size, crystalline structure, resistivity and activation energy for electrical conduction, has been studied. The dielectric and breakdown properties of Ta-Ta2O5-MnO2 capacitive structures, using MnO2 as a solid electrolyte, are also strongly affected by the atmosphere in which the MnO2 layers are prepared. It has been found that the electrical conductivity of the MnO2 samples is greater when they are formed in a saturated water vapour atmosphere, resulting in substantially improved characteristics for the power losses and scintillation voltage of the corresponding tantalum capacitors.

Notes: Abstract The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the systems isopropanol/n-hexane and isopropanol/n-heptane are recorded to deduce thermodynamic functions. A discussion ofSaroléa-Mathot's methods follows. Für die im Titel genannten Systeme werden aus den NMR-Spektren thermodynamische Funktionen abgeleitet. Eine Diskussion derSaroléa-Mathot-Methode wird präsentiert.

Notes: Abstract Four new species of Penicillium Link ex Fries are described and illustrated. Two of them have been recovered from the air of Madrid, one from sandy soil, and one from leaves of Zacintha verrucosa Gaertner. They clearly differ from all species of the genus described so far and are, therefore, described and proposed as new taxa: Penicillium cordubense sp. nov., Penicillium gaditanum sp. nov, Penicillium zacinthae sp. nov., and Penicillium hispalense sp. nov.

Notes: Summary The previously detected modifier variability acting on the expression of the Bare (Ba) locus inDrosophila subobscura is demonstrated to be due to polygenes situated along the chromosome O. From crosses between isogenic lines of high and low modifier effect we ascertained the presence of approximately 5 modifier loci.

Notes: Summary γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase activity and glutathione levels were studied in rat mammary gland during the lactogenic cycle; both increased during mid-lactation. The enzyme's specific activity with several amino acids showed that glutamine and methionine were the best substrates. Maleate decreased the transpeptidation reaction and increased the hydrolytic activity. These results suggest that γ-glutamyltranspeptidase from the mammary gland is similar to the enzyme described in other tissues in relation to these properties and the physiological role proposed in amino acids transport.

Notes: Abstract Optimal conditions for studying the ultrastructure of chromatin fibers of histone-containing spermatozoa in thin sections have been determined. Better results for preservation in sperm of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa, have been found than in different frog species studied. The fine structure of chromatin fibers after different treatments was studied by computer methods. A clear superbead structure was found under all conditions which preserve the chromatin fibres. These have a diameter of 30 nm, with superbeads about 33 nm long. In the best preserved cases an additional periodicity of 11 nm along the fibres was found. There is no clear relationship of this periodicity with an eventual solenoidal structure of the chromatin fibers.

Notes: Summary A pericentric inversion of chromosome 1 was found in three phenotypically normal brothers. The proband consulted for azoospermia. Also, one of his brothers is azoospermic and another one is severely oligozoospermic. G-banding studies indicate that the breakpoints of the inversion are at p13,q25.
