Notes: Abstract Computer produced tables of analytical expressions for the Hansen coefficientsX 0 n, ±m (e) andX 0 −(n+1), ±m (e) are obtained when 1≤n≤30 and 0≤m≤n. The most important properties of these coefficients are briefly discussed together with a description of the recursive procedures used to compute them. The computation ofX k n, ±m andX k −(n+1), ±m whenk≠0 is also discussed. Although tables of these coefficients for 1≤n≤30, −n≤m≤n and |m−k|≤12 have been computed they are not presented here due to their inordinate length.

Notes: Abstract The occurrence and uniqueness of the ‘critical inclination’ in satellite theory is discussed. An infinite set of canonical transformations in Hill variables are shown to exist whereby the first order secular part of the disturbing function can be changed into an alternative form. As a result of such a transformation the ‘critical inclination’ can become (a)any other real or complex inclination or a function independent of the satellite's orbital inclination and (b) a function dependent on the semi-major axis, eccentricity and inclination of the satellite's orbit. It is also shown that all transformations of types (a) and (b) are only valid for short intervals of time of the order of a few satellite revolutions. Furthermore if such transformations are modified so that they become valid for greater intervals of time, then the resulting solutions in all cases containno singular divisor other than the ‘critical inclination’. It is concluded that the singularity at the ‘critical inclination’ is unique and that it represents an actual physical resonance rather than something resulting from the method of solution or the type of variable used in the analysis. This conclusion is supported by numerical evidence which shows that a satellite's perigee height does suffer resonant changes when the orbital inclination is equal to the ‘critical inclination’ of 63.°4.

Notes: Abstract An analysis has been carried out on the 32 years of λ10 cm solar flux data, published by Covington, to test for evidence of the periodicities found by others using different techniques. Two features with periods of about 25 and 31 days appear to persist throughout the data, but there is no evidence for the 12.6 days periodicity claimed by Dicke and Goldenberg from solar ellipticity measurements, nor for the 12.07 day periodicity claimed by Knight et al. from an analysis of sunspot numbers. A 750 day periodicity is evident during 1970–75; this may correspond to the feature deduced by Sakurai from the sunspot numbers (and claimed to correlate with the neutrino flux); this feature can change in amplitude at other times. The other major feature has a period of about 1100 days, but disappears completely during 1970–75. The above periods are all synodic.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that thin-film field effect transistors (FETs) made from amorphous (a-) silicon deposited by the glow-discharge technique have considerable potential as switching elements in addressable liquid crystal display panels. The fabrication of the elements and their characteristics with steady and pulsed applied potentials are discussed in some detail. Two important points are stressed: (i) a-Si device arrays can be produced by well-established photolithographic techniques, and (ii) satisfactory operation at applied voltages below 15VV is possible. Small experimental 7×5 transistor panels have been investigated and it is shown that with the present design up to 250-way multiplexing could be achieved. The reproducibility of FET characteristics is good and in tests so far no change has been observed after more than 109 switching operations.

Notes: Summary The influence of bromocryptine treatment on the timing of vaginal patency and 1st oestrus in female rats was studied. No significant influence of bromocryptine on these parameters was noted, and it is concluded that suppression of prolactin secretion has no effect on puberty attainment.

Notes: Summary A needle type of colloid osmometer has been devised with special attachments which made it useable with 3-μl samples. It has been used in oncometry of fresh water teleosts to give the following results: 5.1±1.0 mm Hg for goldfish, 5.2±0.71 mm Hg for carp, and 14.3±0.75 mm Hg for eel.

Notes: Summary A glasshouse experiment was conducted to determine the effect of plant age on critical phosphorus concentration in apical tissue ofStylosanthes hamata cv. Verano. Cut and non-cut treatments were included to simulate grazing and non-grazing situations. The critical concentration declined rapidly in both treatments during the 18 weeks following germination and remained relatively constant thereafter. The results are consistent with a higher phosphorus requirement for grazed plants compared with ungrazed plants.

Notes: Abstract Addition of Cd2+ or phenylarsine oxide (PhAsO) to respiring rat liver mitochondria results first in acidification of the medium (H+ efflux) followed by disappearance of H+ (discharge of the pH gradient or uncoupling). The first phase of H+ efflux is dependent upon the presence of K+ in the medium, and is not seen in the presence of valinomycin, which is consistent with the conclusion that H+ efflux is linked to membrane potential-dependent uptake of K+. These effects are abolished by low levels of 2,3-dimercaptopropanol but potentiated by excess of 2-mercaptoethanol, showing involvement of a dithiol type of group in the response. Mersalyl produces only the H+ efflux, and subsequent addition of Cd2+ or PhAsO produces collapse of the ΔpH.

Notes: Abstract Postponed faculty retirements, combined with declining student enrollments and persistent inflation, are causing increasing concern in higher education. The 1978 Amendments to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act establish the mandatory retirement age at 70, but exempt tenured faculty from this provision until 1982. The legislation focuses attention on the retirement aspect of the problem, and researchers are busy analyzing the issue to help the industry plan for the impact of the new law. Most analysts approach the task from the aggregate perspective, and apply industry norms to individual institutions. The variations among institutions undermines the validity of this approach. This article demonstrates the problems of the aggregate analysis, and offers an alternative for individual institutions.
