    Notes: The content of 16 essential elements was determined in fresh and canned sweet potatoes by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The elemental content of fresh sweet potatoes was compared with that of canned sweet potatoes. All data were analyzed statistically. There were significantly lower amounts of copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, and zinc in canned sweet potatoes than in fresh sweet potatoes and no significant differences in calcium, chloride, iron, manganese, and sodium between the fresh and canned samples. Percentages of the established and estimated RDA's show that fresh and canned sweet potatoes are relatively good sources of potassium and relatively fair sources of copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. Retention of elements in the canned sweet potatoes ranged from 53% to 92%. When the content of elements in the canned syrup is considered, element retention was virtually 100%.

    Notes: Treatment of either of the stable anhydrous crystalline forms of or-lactose with potassium methoxide in methanol at reflux does not result in the formation of β-lactose, whereas the latter is formed from α-lactose monohydrate or hygroscopic anhydrous α-lactose under these conditions. We find that when β-lactose is added to a reaction mixture containing either form of stable anhydrous α-lactose, conversion of α-lactose to β-lactose proceeds readily. Further, we show that this conversion may be a solid-solid transformation rather than dissolution of α-lactose followed by crystallization as β-lactose.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS Nosema algerae, a microsporidan parasite of anopheline mosquitoes, was successfully replicated in 3 insect cell culture lines: Trichoplusia ni (TN-368); Heliothis zea (IPLB-1075); and Mamestra brassicae (IZD-Mb-0503). Infectious spores were produced in vitro. Spores were observed at 48 h postinfection, and some cells were filled with sproes by 72 h.The number of parasites per cell increased with time. At 72 h postinfection, the infection rates for the 3 cell lines ranged from 23 to 32%. Infected cell lines were subcultured, and by the 6th passage spore production had ceased.

    Notes: : A combination pumped storage reservoir system was simulated by modifying the WRE deep reservoir model. Each of the two reservoirs was described by a copy of the WRE model program, the two programs were converted into subroutines and were called upon alternately by a main program. Operationally, the contributing reservoir, i.e., the reservoir from which flow was discharged, was simulated for one execution interval (1 hour), followed by simulating the receiving reservoir for the same execution interval. The main program directed the discharge temperature of the contributing reservoir for each execution interval as input for simulating the receiving reservoir. The two subroutines were run in this interactive mode for a simulation period of one year.Two simulations, labeled “Pump” and “Net,” were effected and differed basically in the distribution of flow volumes exchanged between the reservoirs. In the ‘Pump’ simulation the total hourly flow volumes were distributed into appropriate horizontal layers of the lakes as determined by temperature-density relationships, i.e., the pumped discharges were distributed into the upper lake and the generation discharges were distributed into the lower lake. In the ‘Net’ simulation only the net daily discharges (daily difference between pump-back and generation at the upper dam), distributed uniformly over 24 hours, were mixed into the horizontal layers of the two lakes.Both simulations produced annual thermal regimes that were apparently within reason for the geographical area and the nature of the input data. However, neither accurately reflected a generalized conditions for the reservoirs because the Pump simulation reflected conditions in the forebay and tailrace of the Upper dam while the Net simulation reflected conditions of the remaining parts of the reservoirs.

    Notes: A serious type of clogging occurs in wells which abstract anaerobic water from the shallow aquifer in the river region in The Netherlands. These clogged wells can easily be regenerated by means of sodium hypochlorite (15%). The figure for the specific yield after regeneration approximates to the figure on commissioning.During the pumping to waste to clear the well after regeneration, the types of reaction products present in the spent chlorine solution were investigated. From this it can be deduced that the chlorine solution added was utilised mostly for the oxidation of iron sulphides. The remainder was used mainly for the oxidation of organic material. At the same time, calcium carbonate went into solution and iron carbonate was formed. During the regeneration of a number of wells, some silt was also removed.Although information can be obtained in this way about the composition of the materials removed, it is impossible to form any concept of the nature in which these substances are present around the clogged wells.

    Notes: Bush beans, carrots and tomatoes were shown to absorb 1,3-dichloro-propene from vermiculite, solution culture and sand. The dichloropro-pene was translocated and metabolized rapidly in the plant to 3-chloroallyl alcohol. The 3-chloroallyl alcohol itself is similarly absorbed by these plants. Subsequent metabolism involved transformation to 3-chloro-1-propanol and 3-chloroacrylic acid enroute to a central metabolite and eventual incorporation into normal plant products. The dichloropropene isomers and chloroallyl alcohol had short half-lives in the plant and were not measurable by 120 h after initial administration of these compounds to the plant. The plant residues appear to be of no environmental concern.

    Notes: The pattern and extent of 14C-glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] translocation from the treated leaf and metabolism of 14C-glyphosate were studied in field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.), hedge bindweed (Convolvulus sepium L.). Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.] tall morning glory [lpomoea purpurea (L.) Roth.] and wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus L.). 14C was translocated throughout the plants within 3 days with accumulation in the meristematic tips of the roots and shoots evident. Cross and longitudinal sections of stems and roots showed that the 14C was localized in the phloem. Field bindweed translocated 3–5% of the applied 14C from the treated leaf, hedge bindweed 21.6%, Canada thistle 7.8%, tall morningglory 6.5%, and wild buckwheat 5%. Field bindweed, Canada thistle, and tall morningglory metabolized the parent glyphosate to aminomethylphosphonic acid to a limited extent. This metabolite made up less than 15% of the total 14C. Of the total 14C applied to excised leaves, 50% had disappeared within 25 days.

    Notes: Oxidation of methyl linoleate in a model emulsion system containing soy protein and copper was studied. The prooxidative effect of soy protein was inhibited following proteolysis. Both the TBA test and diene conjugation measurements showed similar oxidative patterns. The inhibitory effect of the proteolytic treatment was ascribed to the binding of copper by proteolytic products and these copper complexes appeared to be less catalytic than the intact protein-copper complex. However, the release of bound antioxidant phenolics or copper chelating agents, e.g. phytic acid following proteolysis, may also be involved.
