    Notes: Characterization studies on a series of coprecipitated alumina-supported nickel methanation catalysts by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are described. Binding energies and spectral shapes have been determined for several standard compounds (Ni, NiO, Ni(OH)2, NiAl2O4, Al2O3) to provide background information for interpreting the catalyst spectra. The results indicate that the surface regions of the fresh (unreduced) catalysts are composed primarily of amorphous NiAl2O4 with some NiO particles present either within the pores of the support or covered by a NiAl2O4 layer. In comparison with similarly prepared silica-supported catalysts, reducibility is more difficult indicating the presence of stronger support interactions.

    Notes: Experiments providing multi-point data on electron mean free paths vs. energy in pure materials have been reviewed for energies from 150 to 4000 eV. With the assumption that the simple equation λ=kEm can approximate the data, one obtains values of m between 0.53 and 0.80. Observations by ESCA of widely spaced photoelectron lines for Mg, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge and As also lead to the conclusion that the exponent is considerably larger than 0.5, and is more likely in the range 0.65-0.75.

    Notes: Homogeneous films comprised of mixtures of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) can be obtained by evaporation from a ternary solution containing toluene as the solvent. Heterogeneous films result when the solvent is trichloroethylene. The possibility that a heterogeneous film cast from trichloroethylene can be transformed to a homogeneous one by physical means is a logical expectation when the polymer-polymer interaction is favorable, though as yet no comprehensive report has appeared in the literature. We have accomplished the transformation by increasing the temperature. Optical microscopy and glass transition experiments were employed to observe the effects.

    Description: Immunoglobulin class switching involves specific DNA rearrangements of the gene segments coding for heavy chain constant regions (CH) during B lymphocyte differentiation. In two different cases of C mu to C alpha switching examined here (T15 and M603) and one taken from the literature (MC101), three different sites on the 5' side of C mu and three different sites on the 5' side of C alpha are joined together in the process of CH switching. The sequences surrounding the three germ-line C alpha sites of recombination are highly conserved blocks of 30 nucleotides that may serve as recognition sequences for CH switching to the C alpha gene. This putative recognition sequence is repeated 17 times in approximately 1400 nucleotides of the germ-line Calpha 5' flanking sequence. The lack of homology between this C alpha sequence and sequences reported for the C gamma 1 and C gamma 2b switch sites suggests that heavy chain switching is mediated by class-specific recognition sequences and, presumably, class-specific regulatory mechanisms. In addition, it appears that in one example (MC101) CH switching progressed from C mu to C alpha to C gamma 1.     Description: Accomplishments and the outlook for graphite-polyimide composite structures are briefly outlined. Laminates, skin-stiffened and honeycomb sandwich panels, chopped fiber moldings, and structural components were fabricated with Celion/LARC-160 and Celion/PMR-15 composite materials. Interlaminar shear and flexure strength data obtained on as-fabricated specimens and specimens that were exposed for 125 hours at 589 K indicate that epoxy sized and polyimide sized Celion graphite fibers exhibit essentially the same behavior in a PMR-15 matrix composite. Analyses and tests of graphite-polyimide compression and shear panels indicate that utilization in moderately loaded applications offers the potential for achieving a 30 to 50 percent reduction in structural mass compared to conventional aluminum panels. Data on effects of moisture, temperature, thermal cycling, and shuttle fluids on mechanical properties indicate that both LARC-160 and PMR-15 are suitable matrix materials for a graphite-polyimide aft body flap. No technical road blocks to building a graphite-polyimide composite aft body flap are identified.

    Description: A graphite epoxy shear panel with bonded on J stiffeners was investigated. The panel, loaded to buckling in a picture frame shear test is described. Two finite element models, each of which included the doubler material bonded to the panel skin under the stiffeners and at the panel edges, were used to make a stress analysis of the panel. The shear load distributions in the panel from two commonly used boundary conditions, applied shear load and applied displacement, were compared with the results from one of the finite element models that included the picture frame test fixture.

    Description: Thermal faceting was observed for the high index planes of LaB6. The (100), (110), and (111) planes were found to be the most thermodynamically stable faces in vacuum in a study of electrode materials for thermionic emitters. The properties of adsorbed carbon, cesium, and cesium-oxygen layers were investigated on LaB6 single crystal surfaces as well as on Zr/0/W(100) and W(100). Cesium was found to increase electron reflection near the collision threshold on LaB6(100) and W(100) and to decrease the reflection on Zr/0/W(100). This difference may be explained by the unusually high threshold reflection coefficient of Zr/0/W without adsorbed cesium.
