    Notes: Abstract The effects of the average light irradiance (〈I〉) on growth and nitrate uptake kinetics of the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii, in nitrate-limited chemostat cultures, were studied. Light was nonsaturating for 〈I〉 〈9.4 Wm−2, for all growth rates (μ) studied. However, μ was throughout limited by the availability of nitrate. Under light-saturating conditions the kinetics of nitrate-limited growth could be adequately described by both the Monod and Droop equations. Under light-non-saturating conditions the internal nitrogen content (Q) was a function of both μ and 〈I〉, for which new formulas were derived. The high uptake capacity (V max) of nitrate-limited cells was independent of μ, but was significantly increased for cells growing at 〈I〉 〈9.4 Wm−2. The half-saturation constant for nitrate uptake (K s u ) increased with increasing μ, but was independent of the prevailing light conditions. The effects of light during nitrate-limited growth were associated with the regulation in the nitrogen-containing pigments. The results reported herein have important consequences for the use of Q, K s u and V max values as indicators of nutrient-deficiency of natural populations.

    Notes: The preferential orientations of the purine bases in dinucleoside monophosphates such as ApA, ApG, and GpA in 10-2M neutral aqueous solutions have been investigated by proton relaxation at 250 MHz. These orientations are deduced from computer simulations of the magnetization recovery curves following a 180° nonselective pulse. The distances between the H(8) proton of a base and the ribose ring protons which are used in these calculations are obtained by minimization as a function of the glycosyl torsion angle ϒ of the standard deviation between the isotropic reorientation correlation times τR derived from the relaxation rates of these protons. The average H(1′) - H(8) distance obtained by this procedure may be readily verified from the reduction of the H(1′) relaxation rate when H(8) is substituted by a deuteron. The limits of validity of the assumption of a single correlation time τR governing the proton relaxation have been estimated, taking into account several possible internal motions, e.g., the rotation of the base, of the methylene exocyclic group and the N ⇄ S interconversion of the ribose ring. For 10-10 〈 τR 〈 2 × 10-10 sec, it appears that the influence of these motions on the proton relaxation becomes perceptible when the jump rates among equilibrium positions exceed ca. 109 sec-1.The whole of the experimental results show that for the ribose ring N conformer, the orientation of the bases is found in the ranges 60° 〈 ϒ 〈 80° (syn) and 180° 〈 ϒ 〈 210° (anti). For ribose S conformer, it is observed that this orientation is mainly syn with 5° 〈 ϒ 〈 90°. The average H(1′) - H(8) distance provides semiquantitative information on the overall syn or anti orientations of the base in each nucleoside moiety. At 298 K the population of the anti conformer is found to increase in the order A- pG 〈 Ap-G ∼ Gp-A 〈 Ap-A 〈 A-pA 〈 G-pA. A more detailed analysis of relaxation data shows that the maximum possible fraction of the stacked form of dinucleotides, due to the occurrence of N-anti conformers in both nucleoside moieties, is in the order ApG 〈 GpA 〈 ApA, in agreement with previous works, with however smaller values.Lastly the deuteron linewidth in position 8 of the bases indicates a syn-anti transition rate of the order of 109 sec-1 at room temperature, without noticeable effects therefore on the proton relaxation.

    Notes: The present paper describes the synthesis of tetrakis [4-(1-phenylvinyl)phenyl]plumbane (1). It was found that “living” mono- or difunctional carbanionic polystyrenes are able to react with compound 1 to form star-shaped polymers or tetrafunctional crosslinked networks, resp., and it could also be shown that this polyfunctional lead compound can be used to prepare starshaped copolymers containing polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) branches.

    Notes: Mastication has been studied by cinematography with synchronized electromyography (computer quantified and analyzed), while unanesthetized, freely feeding cats (Felis catus) were reducing equivalent-sized chunks of raw and cooked beef and cooked chicken. Cats reduce food on one side at a time, and their chewing cycles show both horizontal and anteroposterior deflections. Food objects are shifted from side to side by lateral jerks of the head and movements of the tongue.During the opening phase, the lower jaw is rotated relatively straight downward, and the digastric muscles are active in bilateral symmetry. Near the end of opening, the head jerks upward, both zygomaticomandibulares start to fire, and opening acceleration of the mandible decreases. Closing starts with horizontal displacement of the mandibular canines toward the working side, accompanied by asymmetrical activities from the working side deep temporalis and the balancing side medial pterygoid, as well as a downward jerk of the head. As closing proceeds, the mandibular canines remain near the working side and the working side zygomaticomandibularis and deep masseter are very active. Near the end of closing, the mandibular canine on the working side moves toward the midline, and adductors, digastrics, and lateral pterygoids of both sides are active. The adductors of the working side are generally more active than those of the balancing side.During a reduction sequence, the number and shape of the masticatory cycles, as well as movements of the head, during a reduction sequence are affected significantly by food type. As reduction proceeds, the duration of bite and the muscular activity (as characterized by number and amplitude of spikes) change significantly among muscles of the working and balancing sides. The adductors of the working side are generally most active when cats chew raw beef, less for cooked beef, and least for cooked chicken. In general, the adductor activity reflects food consistency, whereas that of the digastrics and lateral pterygoids reflects more the vertical and lateral displacements of the mandible. Statistical analysis documents that the methods of electrode insertion and test give repeatable results for particular sites in different animals. Thus, it should be possible to compare these results with those produced while other mammalas are masticating.

    Notes: In order to better understand the mechanism of lymphocyte surface receptor redistribution induced by externally added ligands, polycationized ferritin (PCF), a nonconventional ligand, was tested using both fluorescence and electron microscopy for its ability to cause patching and capping of anionic molecules on the surface of both transformed and normal mouse lymphocytes. Binding of PCF at 0°C for 1 hour induces the appearance of patches; subsequent incubation at 37° for 30-60 minutes causes the formation of a cap structure with the lymphoid cells tested (T-lymphoma cells and splenic lymphocytes). Using various experimental treatments (e.g., sodium azide, cytochalasin B and D, colchicine, prefixation, and cold temperatures), PCF-induced capping has been found to be temperature sensitive, and to require metabolic energy and an intact cytoskeletal system. In addition, using double immunofluorescence techniques which involve rhodamine-labeled PCF and fluorescein-conjugated heavy meromyosin, it has been observed that the formation of the PCF-induced cap coincides with an accumulation of intracellular actin directly beneath the cap structure. Furthermore, agents such as dibutyryl cyclic AMP and theophylline, which cause an increase in intracellular cyclic AMP, have been shown to stimulate PCF-associated capping. This study suggests that increasing levels of intracellular cyclic AMP may activate, directly or indirectly, membrane-associated contractile elements required for the aggregation of membrane proteins into patches and caps.
