Notes: A method for the HPLC separation of phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and sphingomyelin (SPH) was achieved using five in-series columns packed with LiChrosorb, Partisil, and μ-Porasil adsorbents, a solvent mixture of chloroform/methanol/ammonium hydroxide (50 : 36 : 6.7, by volume), and a Pye LCM2 Moving Wire (FID) detector. The same phospholipid mixture was also separated using four μ-Porasil columns with the same eluent and detector. The latter conditions were found to be suitable for the analysis of phospholipids obtained after centrifuging, extraction, and precipitation of surface-active lipid components of patient amniotic fluid collected at amniocentesis section. The lecithin/sphingomyelin (L/S) ratios, determined by the HPLC method, correlated well with those determined by the TLC technique in four normal pregnancies, whereas results of shake tests did not correlate too well with L/S ratios determined by the above two chromatographic methods. Besides the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio, the present method was able to supply additional information: the concentrations of phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol, for prediction of fetal lung maturity, and the palmitic acid content of amniotic fluid phosphatidylcholine.

Notes: The concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) are applied to polypropylene, a homopolymer and two copolymers, with a view to characterizing their brittle behavior at slow rates (0.5 cm/min) in terms of a fracture toughness, KIc. The effect of thickness, notch sharpness, and the mode of loading on KIc have been investigated in order to determine the plane strain toughness values, KcI for the materials. The two types of material are compared in terms of their toughness values over a range of temperatures between +30 and -160°C. Evidently, the small amounts of ethylene added to the copolymers show plasticizing effects, suppressing the yield stress and the ductile-brittle transition temperature. In addition, the copolymers exhibit a ductile-brittle region between -100 and -45°C where notch strengthening is apparent in the tension mode and a slow crack growth region between -45 and -30°C where slow growth precedes unstable fracture. The homopolymer, however, shows no clear evidence of such intermediate regions, except for slight amounts of slow growth above 0°C, and becomes ductile around 30°C.

Notes: The solubility parameter of poly(oxetane), poly(3,3-dimethyloxetane) and poly(3,3-diethyl oxetane) has been estimated by measuring solution viscosities. Values of δ = 9.4, 7.9, and 7.9 cal1/2·cm-3/2 for each polymer were obtained and compared with those calculated from empirical methods. The 3-dimensional solubility parameter approach has been also applied in order to get additional information on the effect of structural modifications on the main chain in the solubility behavior.

Notes: Experiments to produce polycarbosilazane resin and high-strength silicon carbide-silicon nitride (SixNyCz) fibers as well as resin/fiber characteristics are reported. Polycarbosilazane resin was drawn into fibers from the melt and subsequently treated and pyrolyzed into SixNyCz fibers. These materials are characterized by high tensile modulus (29 × 106 psi for 0.4-mil diameter) and high electrical resistivity (6.9 × 108 Ω·cm for 0.6-mil diameter).
