Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary In terrestrial isopods there are two types of a water conducting system. The porcellio-type is a recycling system. Out of the maxillar-nephridium urine is secreted, which spreads through the ventral and dorsal structures of the water conducting system. It is then directed along the pleopods and is reabsorbed in the gut. Within this system only urine runs. The ligiatype is an open system. Here urine runs as well as water, which is absorbed by the sixth and seventh pereiopods. In all the species investigated incl. Ligia and Hemilepistus a water conducting system has been found. Apparently this system is constitutive for all terrestrial isopods. Concerning function (hypothesis): the water conducting system is multifunctional, but above all serving excretion. Isopods, also terrestrial isopods, are ammoniotelic. While the urine is spreading through the conducting structures ammonia is vapourizing off the increased surface. A special permeability of the integument needs not be assumed. After the urine having passed the anus, it is reabsorbed in the gut. The disadvantage of the ammoniotelism, the great demand of water, is avoided, the advantage, the economizing of energy, is preserved. Additionally the water conducting system allows an active thermoregulation to a certain extent. Furthermore it has functions in respiration, conducting of water and keeping the integument humid and clean.

Notes: Abstract Molecular hydrogen strongly inhibits C2H2-reducing activity in intact cells of Anabaena sp. TA 1 in the light under anaerobic conditions. The inhibitory effect can be partially relieved by supplying the cells with molecular oxygen. When cells of Anabaena sp. TA 1 were grown under anaerobic N2-fixation conditions in the presence of 0.05 bar H2 with white light a pronounced decrease of growth rate occurred. With ammonium ions as nitrogen source the inhibitory effect of H2 was less pronounced. Concomitant with the reduced growth under N2 in the presence of H2 a loss of blue-green pigmentation was observed due to a diminished phycocyanin content. On the other hand, the concentration of carotenoids and chlorophyll remained nearly constant. With NH 4 + as nitrogen source nearly no alteration of phycocyanin content occurred upon incubation with H2. In addition, H2 induced a random distribution of thylakoid membranes in vegetative cells which normally exhibited a curved, parallel pattern. In heterocysts, however, photosynthetic membranes were always arranged randomly. Under far red light, growth and activity of photosystem II were largely diminshed. Under these conditions H2 exhibits an additional inhibitory effect. However, compared to 62% growth inhibition under white light, a decrease of only 20% occurred. Measurements of the photosynthetic electron flow with isolated thylakoid membranes showed that oxidation of diphenylcarbazide (DCP) by membranes from H2-grown cells was inhibited by 28% compared to membranes from control cells. Using ascorbate/DCPIP as electron donor an inhibition of only 1–4% was measured. It is concluded, that H2 inhibits electron flow in the photosynthetic electron transport chain at a site between photosystem II and photosystem I.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The properties of textiles from PET fibres are decisively depending on the stresses set within the material. According to the thermal stability of molecular interactions these stresses can be released by thermal treatments at different temperatures. As a consequence of stress release the material shrinks. Informations on the stresses built in can be achieved by following up the development of contraction force (shrinkage force) as a function of temperature when heating the fibres under constant length. By variation of heating rates retarded stress development and stress relaxation are observed. In this case the real set tensions due to prior treatments are not recorded. A new modified technique of measuring shrinkage forces provides in certain intervals of temperature an alteration of the clamped lengths by a minute stretching or shrinking of the fibres in a manner resulting a zero force deviation. So at each temperature we have an equilibrium of the released inherent stresses of the fibres and the recorded ones. These socalled equilibrium-shrinkage-force-curves are capable of describing the state of order of PET-fibres in a better way than other methods do. It will be shown that the formerly developed parameters of a heat treatment „effective temperature” and “effective tension” (8) can be derived from these curves as well as those tensions which had been set up in the fibres during cooling and processing or relaxed during storage.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the ionization probability of the quasimolecular 1sσ-state in collisions of very heavy ions with (Z 1+Z 2) α≳1. Multistep excitation processes between bound and continuum states are investigated. Due to the multistep processes the number of created 1sσ-vacancies is typically increased by a factor 2–5 over that obtained within time-dependent perturbation theory (i.e. the one-step processes). Some implications of the many-electron problem and the Pauli principle are discussed. The δ-electron distribution is compared with recent experimental data.
