    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Messungen bei stationärer Scherung (Viskosität und erste Normalspannungsdifferenz), harmonischperiodischer Scherbeanspruchung (dynamische Viskosität und Speichermodul), sowie rheo-optische Messungen (Mikrophotographien unter polarisiertem Licht während der Scherung mit stroboskopischer Beleuchtung) wurden an einem konzentrierten Poly-β-Benzyl-Aspartat-Gel durchgeführt. Die Eigenschaften erwiesen sich in ausgeprägter Weise als von der Scherungsvorgeschichte abhängig. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf die Existenz einer scherempfindlichen, heilbaren Netzwerkstruktur hin.
    Notes: Summary Steady shear (viscosity and first normal stress difference), dynamic (viscosity and storage modulus), and rheo-optical measurements (polarized light micrographs taken during shear with stroboscopic illumination) were all made on a concentrated gel of poly-β-benzyl-aspartate. The properties were found to be strongly dependent on prior shear history. Results are consistent with the existence of a shear-sensitive and healable network.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On a effectué, aux Etats Unis, l'étude du comportement thermique et mécanique d'un polyéthylène préparé et fortement étiré en URSS. Le point de fusion et le pourcentage de cristallinité ont été évalués en fonction de la vitesse de chauffage et de la recristallisation. Lesvaleurs respectives du module d'Young et de la limite de rupture dans la direction d'orientation s'élèvent respectivement à 4.1 et 0.15 GPa. L'allongement à la rupture est d'environ 8%.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Das thermische und mechanische Verhalten eines in der UdssR hergestellten und stark gezogenen Polyäthylens wurde in den U. S. A. gemessen. Schmelzpunkt und Prozentsatz der Kristallinität wurden als Funktion der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit und Rekristallisation in den Untersuchungen ausgewertet. Der Young-sche Modulus und die Zugspannung zum Reissen in der Orientierungsrichtung betrugen 4.1, bzw. 0.15 GPa. Die Dehnung bis zum Bruch betrug etwa 8 %.
    Notes: Abstract The thermal and mechanical behaviour was measured in the U. S.for a polyethylene that had been prepared and highly drawn in the U. S. S. R. The melting point and percent crystallinity were evaluated in this studies as a function of heating rate and recrystallization. The Young's modulus and tensile stress to break in the orientation direction were 4.1 and 0.15 GPa, respectively.The tensile strain to break was about 8%.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On décrit une nouvelle technique pour étudier la formation de mousse dans les polymères fondus qui contiennent des agents de soufflage décomposables par voie thermique. On a associé un simple cylindre et un porte-échantillon d'immersion à un analyseur thermomécanique standard. Cela permet d'enregistrer la hauteur, c'est-à-dire le volume, en fonction du temps ou de la température, à des vitesses de montée en température présélectionnées. Des démonstrations avec du polyéthylène et du chlorure de polyvinyle plastifié pouvant mousser ont mis en évidence les influences respectives de la vitesse de chauffage, du type et de la concentration de l'agent de soufflage, de l'inhibiteur de l'agent de soufflage, de la viscosité du polymère et de l'agent de réticulation sur la vitesse de formation de la mousse et sur sa hauteur finale, c'est-à-dire la densité de la mousse.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Eine neue Technik zur Untersuchung der Schaumbildung aus Polymerschmelzen, welche thermisch zerstörbare Schaumbildner enthalten, wird beschrieben. Ein einfacher Zylinder und ein Tauchprobenbehälter wurden mit einem thermomechanischen Standardanalysator gekoppelt. Dies ermöglicht das Registrieren der Höhe, d.h. des Volumens als Funktion der Zeit oder Temperatur, bei vorgewählten Geschwindigkeiten für die Temperaturabtastung. Versuche mit schäumungsfähigem Polyäthylen und plastizisiertem Poly(Vinylchlorid) zeigten die Einflüsse der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit, des Typs und der Konzentration des Schaumbildners, des Inhibitors des Schaumbildners, der Viskosität von Polymer und Quervernetzer auf die Geschwindigkeit der Schaumbildung und auf die Endhöhe des Schaumes, d.h. die Schaumdichte.
    Notes: Abstract A novel technique is described for studying the growth of foam from polymer melts containing thermally-decomposable blowing agents. A simple cylinder and plunger sample holder has been combined with a standard thermomechanical analyzer. This enables the recording of height i.e. volume vs. time or temperature at preselected rates for temperature scan. Demonstrations with foamable polyethylene and plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) have revealed the influences of heating rate, blowing agent type and concentration, blowing agent inhibitor, polymer viscosity and crosslinking agent on foam growth rate and final foam height i.e. foam density.

    Notes: Abstract Cross-linked poly(dienes) (polychloroprene, polyisoprene and polybutadiene) are shown to exhibit crazing when subjected to low strain-rate tensile tests at low temperatures. Conditions for crazing to occur in the polybutadienes are examined. It is found that observable crazing occurs providing the rubbers are (a) slightly oriented, (b) stretched below their glass transition temperature (T g) and (c) deformed in an environment which is close to its liquefaction or sublimation point. Gases evolved after low temperature testing are shown to be dissolved gases from the test environment. The interrelationship between the mechanical properties of the rubbers, quantity of gas absorbed and the radicals formed by scission of the network molecules is explored.

    Notes: Summary Assay conditions are described which permit detection of cryptic temperature sensitive RNA polymerases in vitro. RNA polymerase was prepared from fifteen different temperature sensitive mutants of Salmonella typhimurium chosen at random from a larger group isolated by localized mutagenesis and uridine suicide techniques. The dependence of enzyme activity on temperature, ionic strength and pH was studied in vitro. Assays at higher ionic strength (0.23 M) and temperature (50°C) distinguish three classes of mutants (Table 2). Activity of seven mutant RNA polymerases (called Class 1) under these conditions was 1% to 5% that of the parental RNA polymerase. Five mutant RNA polymerases (called Class 2) had 18% to 64% of the parental activity and three were not distinguishable from the parental enzyme under these conditions. Mixing experiments showed that the defect in Class 1 mutant enzymes is a property of the enzymes and not due to a diffusible inhibitor. In one case the lesion was shown to reside in the core enzyme. Class 1 mutant RNA polymerases were shown to be irreversibly inactivated during the assay at higher temperature and ionic strength. This suggests that the Class 1 enzymes may be more thermolabile than the wild type enzyme or may fail to be protected from thermal denaturation by formation of a ternary complex with template and product. We conclude that the method used to isolate these mutants (Young et al., 1976) and the assay described here (Table 2) are efficient ways to isolate and detect temperature sensitive RNA polymerase mutants of Salmonella typhimurium.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Polystyrol/Dekalin-Lösungen zeigen in einem Kegel-Platte-Rheometer unter Theta-Bedingungen Fließanomalien. Es wurde gefunden, daß diese Fließanomalien bei niedrigen Schergeschwindigkeiten einsetzen, und es wird gezeigt, daß die elastische Komponente (Normalspannung) für das ungewöhnliche Fließverhalten verantwortlich ist. Der Beginn der Fließanomalien konnte aus Messungen der reversiblen Scherung (“recoverable strain”) als Funktion der Schubspannung vorhergesagt werden. Wir schlagen vor, daß diese Art Analyse ein geeignetes Mittel sein sollte, um dasjenige Beschichtungsfluid zu ermitteln, das die höchstmögliche Beschichtungsgeschwindigkeit erlaubt, ohne daß Fließanomalien auftreten.
    Notes: Summary Polystyrene/decalin solutions exhibit flow irregularities in a cone-and-plate rheometer at theta-conditions. The onset of flow irregularities was found at low shear rates. The elastic component (normal stress) is shown to be responsible for the anomalous flow. The onset of flow irregularities has been predicted from measurements of recoverable strain as a function of shear stress. We suggest that this analysis should be suitable to find the best coating fluid leading to the highest possible speed without exhibiting flow irregularities.
