Notes: A functional relationship has been established between the hardness (peak bioyield point) of raw corn kernels and the time needed for the cooking process. The alkaline cooking index (sensation of softness of kernels, cooked appearance of kernel endosperm, and huh disintegration) was found to have an equivalent kernel hardness. The hardness of raw kernels and the cooking time for four different corn varieties were significantly different (P 〈 0.0001). Within a corn variety, higher calcium hydroxide concentration slightly decreased the cooking time. The linear relationship between variety initial hardness and time at the terminal point of processing makes possible the prediction of the cooking time of a corn variety when its initial hardness is known.

Notes: Abstract In the technique for measuring pulse width by two-photon absorption fluorescence, theoretical calculations indicate that one can hope to obtain a maximum contrast ratio of three between the point at which the two peaks overlap and the point at which there is no superposition. Nevertheless, this calculation has been carried out assuming that the pulse is not attenuated as it traverses the fluorescent medium. In this paper it will be shown that this attenuation gives rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio. As the fluorescence intensity is proportional to the absorption, an increase in the former will be to the detriment of the contrast ratio. We will attempt to give a criterion for the selection of experimental conditions which lead to maximum intensity without an appreciable decrease in the contrast ratio.

Notes: Abstract The attenuation of ultrashort laser pulses by two-photon absorption is theoretically described when a dye is used as the absorbing medium. It is shown that two-photon absorption also yields an intensity stabilization of low repetition rate laser emissions without a significant loss of power. Consequently this technique is proposed for pulse attenuation and stabilization near the damage threshold of second harmonic generator crystals, and its performance is theoretically compared with other attenuation methods.

Notes: Abstract We introduce three new implementations of the sequential secant method for solving nonlinear simultaneous equations. Following the ideas of Gragg and Stewart, we store orthogonal factorizations of some of the matrices involved. Degeneracy in the increments of the independent variable is corrected according to simple and theoretically justified procedures. Some numerical experiences are also given.

Notes: Abstract For a wide class of lagrangian systems we show rigorously that the conventional formulation of Noether's theorem provides a bijective map from the set of equivalence classes of Noether's symmetries onto the set of equivalence classes of conserved currents. We further discuss if Noether's theorem is generalized in a significant way by several formulations proposed in this decade.

Notes: Summary Using an automated system for the analysis of amylase, the release of this enzyme was compared in superfused parotid gland segments from control and reserpine treated rats. Stimulant-evoked amylase release was delayed and of smaller magnitude in the glands of the treated animals and a reduction of the transmembrane K+ gradient caused a smaller and short lasting reduction in Ach-evoked release of amylase in the glands from these animals.

Notes: Abstract The effect of elongation factor (EF) Tu, bound to the ribosome with the help of poly(uridylic) acid, Phe-tRNA and guanyl-5′-yl methylene diphosphonate, on the conformation and/or chemical environment of ribosomal proteins has been examined using, as a probe, protein iodination. Ribosomes complexed only with poly(uridylic acid) and Phe-tRNA have been used as a control. EF-Tu on the ribosome significantly increases the iodination of proteins S7, S10 and L3 and decreases that of S21 and L18.

Notes: Summary Three different diallel crosses were studied in Cicer arietinum; two of size 6×6, one within each of the two botanical groups ‘macrosperma’ and ‘microsperma’ of the cultivated subspecies, and one of 9×9 involving lines covering most of the morphological variation of chickpea. Barriers to crossability present neither a botanical nor a geographical pattern, being probably a direct consequence of interactions between genotypes. The genetic systems of twelve quantitative characters were analysed. Full dominance in a negative sense (small values dominant) is shown by leaflet length, width and shape index, rachis length, leaflet density on the rachis and pod length. Full dominance in a positive sense is shown by seeds per pod. Overdominance (in a positive sense) is evident for pods, seeds and yield per plant. Weak reciprocal differences were manifested by pod length, and pods, seeds and yield per plant. The system controlling number of leaflets per leaf is not clear. Dominance of ‘primitive’ over ‘selected’ characters seems to be the rule. As far as the environmental effects have permitted the analysis, no differences in genetic systems were observed between botanical groups.

Notes: Summary The objective of this paper is to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of coupled systems of differential-difference and difference equations. By differentiating the difference equation, we obtain a system of neutral differential-difference equations and we get the original problem by putting a side condition on the neutral equation; that is, by restricting the initial data to lie on certain manifold in the space of all initial data. This allows us to treat the problem using the methods of neutral functional differential equations. In[8], Hale and Martinez-Amore exploited a certain change of variables to obtain some results on the stability of this systems. In Section 2, we summarize those ideas. The effect of the side condition is reflected in the variation of constants formula in Section 3. In this section, the variation of constants formula is decomposed via eigenspaces. In Section 4, we give a theorem on the Fredholm alternative for periodic solutions which is basic to the application of the usual theory to perturbed linear problems. I want to express my most deep gratitude to Professor J. K. Hale for his advice and suggestions which led to considerable improvements of this paper.
