Notes: A roast coffee infusion (nicaragua arabica) was acidified (pH 1,5) with hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether in a perforator. After evaporation of the solvent the residue was treated with N-methyl-N-trimethylsilyl trifluoroacetamide and analyzed by glass capillary GC/MS. The main components were identified by their electron impact and isobutane chemical ionization mass spectra. 1,2,4-trihydroxy benzene, 1-ethyl-3, 4-dihydroxy benzene and 2,3-dihydroxy toluene were identified as new constituents of roast coffee with possible emetic properties.

Notes: Design procedures for gas sparged contractors for both low and high viscosity liquids were developed to predict overall kLa. Bubble size close to the orifice, for moderately high gas rates, was found to increase at a rate proportional to one third power of gas rate and one tenth power of liquid viscosity. Bubble breakup phenomenon was shown to be related to liquid turbulence in the vessel rather than gas turbulence in the orifice. Procedures were developed through a simple liquid circulation model to obtain a criterion for the onset of bubble breakup. Results indicate that intense liquid mixing and high interfacial area can be achieved in low viscosity liquids by gas sparging alone. In high viscosity fluids, bubble breakup was not observed. The liquid circulation model predicts laminar flow at these experimental conditions over the complete range of gas rates observed.

Notes: The strength and impact resistance of short fiber reinforced thermoplastics are greatly affected by the nature of the stress transfer interface which in turn is influenced by physico-chemical and geometric factors. The geometric factors are controlled by the compounding technology used to manufacture the composite. This paper describes the use of several compounding technologies and a method used to infer the effectiveness of those technologies from studies of molded part mechanical properties and glass fiber length distributions. Resin systems studied were acetal copolymer, polybutylene terephalate, and nylon 6,6.

Notes: A series of water-insoluble anion exchange starches were prepared by the the reaction of various cationic monomers with highly crosslinked starches. These starch products contain tertiary amine and quaternary ammonium functionalities which are effective in removing chromate, dichromate, ferrocyanide, ferricyanide, molybdate, permanganate, and other heavy metal anions from industrial waste effluents. The binding capacity of these anion exchange starches is similar to that of commercial macroreticular resins.

Notes: During the solvent casting process, one side of the polymer film is exposed to air while the other side is in contact with a substrate, used as a mold. We have studied the effect of this difference in exposure during casting on the chemical composition of two types of segmented polyurethane,5 BiomerBiomert™, Ethicon Corp., Somerville, N.J. and Avcothane,Avcothanetm™, Avco-Everett Co., Everett, Mass. by using Fourier transform IR internal reflection spectroscopy. Also, a depth-composition profile was obtained by placing a thin barrier film between the reflection plate and the polymer film.In Avcothane, the air side, which is the blood-contact side, contains a greater amount of the soft segment than the substrate side, and this is more pronounced in the layer closer to the surface. The anisotropy in composition is more drastic when the silicone content is compared. In a layer about 1.5 μ thick, one can detect a greater amount of silicone in the substrate side than in the air side. However, when one averages the concentration in a layer of about 0.8 μ, the trend is reversed; i.e., the greater amount of silicone is now present in the air side than in the substrate side. In Biomer films, the anisotropy in chemical composition is less pronounced. Only a modest increase in the relative content of the soft segment/hard segment is observed in the air side when a depth-composition profile is obtained.

Notes: The carbon resonances of quinacrine, chloroquine, acranil, 4-aminopyridine and 9-aminoacridine in D2O solution have been assigned. Resonance assignments were made using empirical shift parameters, partial proton decoupling, selective proton decoupling and by interpretation of the fully coupled spectra. The effect of pD on the carbon chemical shifts for quinacrine and chloroquine over the range of about 4.5 to 8.5 was observed. Characteristic chemical shifts for the aromatic ring carbons for deprotonation of the heteroaromatic nitrogen were observed.

Notes: [C2H5S]+ ions (m/e 61) with different initial structures were generated in the mass spectrometer from twelve precursor ions. Abundance ratios of competing metastable ion decompositions were used to determine whether these ions decompose through the same or different reaction channels. It was concluded that all [C2H5S]+ ions isomerize to a common structure or mixture of structures prior to decomposition in the first field free region. From 13C labelling experiments it was concluded that [C2H5S]+ ions generated from the molecular ions of 2-propanethiol-2-[13C], partially rearrange to a symmetrical structure before decomposition to [CHS]+ and CH4, whereas in [C2H5S]+ ions generated from the the molecular ions of 1,2-bis-(thiomethoxy-[13C]) ethane, the two carbon atoms become fully equivalent before CH4 loss occurs.
