Notes: The destruction of various UV stabilizers in polypropylene films during irradiation has been examined both in the presence and absence of air and oxidation products. Although some stabilizers were destroyed in the absence of oxygen, all were more sensitive when irradiated in the presence of air. Several stabilizers were highly effective but were destroyed so rapidly that photoprotection of the polymer must have resulted from stabilizer products. Work with preoxidized polymer and with model hydroperoxides and peroxides indicated that most stabilizers were destroyed by the attack of oxygen-centered radicals, with peroxy radical attack appearing to dominate.

Notes: The barrier property of fluorinated surfaces was compared to the surface tension measurements. A relationship between barrier property and the solvent's surface tension was developed. However, other properties of both the solvent and the polymer contribute to barrier property. The surface tension of the polymer surface was separated into nonpolar, polar, and hydrogen bonding forces. By estimating the % γLD of various solvent mixtures, the % γSD was estimated for the polymer surface.

Notes: Cellulose II and cellulose I samples were treated respectively with a strong solution of sodium deuteroxide in D2O and a 99% solution of ethylenediamine. The complexes were washed with D2O and the nature of the OD bands were studied after rehydrogenating the sample. The infrared spectra of these rehydrogenated samples showed well-resolved OD bands which are resistant to reexchange. The Characteristic bands are discussed and compared with the predicted OH-OD frequency shifts.

Notes: Melt blends of bisphenol A polycarbonate with poly(butylene terephthalate) were studied by DTA and dynamic mechanical behavior to determine their state of miscibility. Both techniques showed multiple glass transitions indicative of incomplete miscibility in the amorphous phase. However, these transitions in some cases did not correspond to those in the pure components and varied with overall blend composition in some instances. This indicates that there are amorphous phases containing both components, i.e., partial miscibility. This view was supported by the crystallization behavior of the polyester. Two crystallization exotherms were observed for quenched samples, which is interpreted as polyester crystallization from two separate phases, one richer in this component than the other. Other interpretations of these results are discussed.

Notes: A method is shown for deducing the surface area of a pendant drop from the same profile photograph as is normally used to determine interfacial tension. Manipulation of such drops by a micrometer syringe then enables the pendant drop to be used as a surface balance for studying adsorption from bulk solutions. Results are given for the compression of films from solutions of albumin, γ-globulin, fibrinogen, albumin-γ-globulin mixture and albumin-γ-globulin-fibrinogen mixture, and from serum, plasma, and blood at the isooctane-buffer interface. It is suggested that γ-globulin and fibrinogen films are unfolded at the interface but that albumin films are different in that they consist of an inner, unfolded layer and an outer, globular layer. A film from serum resembles that from γ-globulin alone, and not that from albumin-γ-globulin mixture, whereas a film from plasma resembles that of fibrinogen at low compression and that of albumin-γ-globulin-fibrinogen mixture at high compression. A film from blood is shown to resemble that from plasma.

Notes: A new solid-wall vascular graft which has a compliance approximating that of the natural artery has been prepared from a copolyether-urethane material. Six of nine of these compliant grafts implanted in dogs were patent on removal, the longest implant time being 77 days for a 4-mm I.D. femoral artery graft. This is in contrast to noncompliant grafts of the same copolyurethane in which failure usually occurred within 48 hr.

Notes: A carbon fiber-reinforced carbon is being evaluated as a promising implant material. In a unidirectional composite, high strengths (1200 MN/m2 longitudinal flexural strength) and high modulus (140 GN/m2 flexural modulus) may be obtained with an interlaminar shear strength of 18 MN/m2. Alternatively, layers of fibers may be laid in two directions to give more isotopic properties. The compatibility of the material with bone has been studied by implanting specimens in holes drilled in rat femora. For a period of up to 8 weeks, a thin layer of fibrous tissue bridged the gap between bone and implant; but this tissue mineralizes and by 10 weeks, bone can be observed adjacent to the implant, giving firm fixation. Potential applications include endosseous dental implants where a greater strength in the neck than that provided by unreinforced carbon would be advantageous.

Notes: Early passage mouse embryo fibroblasts, mouse 3T3 cell lines, and early passage diploid human fibroblasts grew to higher cell densities in tissue culture medium supplemented with serum than in medium supplemented with defibrinogenated platelet-poor plasma (PPP). Unlike the mouse cells, the human fibroblasts displayed this differential growth response only in the presence of hypophysiologic concentrations of calcium. The addition of heat-treated extracts of human platelets to PPP-supplemented medium stimulated the replication of both the normal mouse cells and early passage human embryo fibroblasts.Human or mouse fibroblasts transformed by either retroviruses or by SV40, including SV40 infected “serum revertants” and “flat transformants,” grew to equal cell densities in medium supplemented with either serum or PPP. Infection of Balb/c-3T3 cells with SV40 rapidly induced them to grow in PPP-supplemented medium demonstrating that the ability of SV40-transformed cell lines to proliferate in PPP-supplemented medium does not arise from the cell culture selection procedures usually employed to obtain stable virus-transformed cell lines. 3T3 cells infected but not transformed by retroviruses do not replicate in PPP-supplemented medium demonstrating that reduction of the growth requirement for the platelet growth factor(s) by retroviruses is a transformation-specific response. Cell cultures that did not proliferate well in PPP-supplemented medium did not form tumors when inoculated into athymic nude mice. Many, although not all, of the lines which grew well in PPP medium were tumorigenic in nude mice. Together, these findings indicate that: (1) normal fibroblast-like cells display a growth requirement for factor(s) present in serum but not found in PPP; (2) this serum specific growth factor is derived from platelets; (3) a primary response to viral transforming genes is a reduction in the growth requirement for these platelet-derived factors; and (4) cells that have a reduced requirement for the platelet-derived growth factor are often tumorigenic.
