Notes: Abstract A new determination of stratospheric methane from 22 km to 35 km altitude with implications on the abundance of this constituent at greater heights is presented. Previous measurements, some of which showed large discrepancies with currently admitted values, have been reinterpreted and brought into agreement. The results are in contradiction according to present theories with thein situ determined CH4 abundances at the upper edge of the stratosphere. Implications on the vertical transport coefficient used in one dimensional models are discussed.

Notes: Summary The glial fibrillary acidic (GFA) protein and myosin were localized in rat spinal cord and human frontal cortex using specific antibodies against GFA protein from human spinal cord and highly purified smooth myosin from chicken gizzard by means of an indirect immunofluorescence microscopical approach. A strong GFA protein and myosin immunoreactivity was found in astrocytes of the white and grey matter and in the external glial limitans membrane. The very fine branches of astrocytic processes stained with antiGFA protein, but not with anti-myosin. Similar results were obtained with the human frontal cortex, where myosin antibodies failed to reveal the very fine branches of protoplasmic astrocytes. As a whole, staining with the GFA protein antiserum was more crisp than with the myosin antibody.

Notes: Abstract We report on room temperature quasi-cw laser action in K5Nd(MoO4)4 at a wavelength of 1.067 μm. The crystal was pumped with the 5140 Å line of an argon ion laser. Due to thermal effects actual cw lasing was not possible. Chopping the pump light with a low duty cycle of 1∶1000 leads to quasi-cw laser action and stable output power. We have determined the fundamental laser parameters: threshold pump powerA T=15 mW, slope efficiency η=22%, and internal lossesL=2.5%. In order to explain the measured relaxation oscillations, diffusion of the excited 4f-excitons is considered. According to a recently developed theory, a diffusion constant ofD=2×10−6cm2/s explains the observed results.

Notes: Abstract The effect of transversally applied magnetic fields on the polarization behavior of a single-mode gas laser is theoretically investigated, stressing the importance of the additivity of respective contributions influencing the time evolution of polarization parameters. By adding a new element to the existing theory, namely the contribution of magnetic-field-free regions in the active medium, and by considering the relatively large effects that small cavity anisotropies can cause, several apparent discrepancies between experiments and existing theory are resolved.

Notes: Abstract For a homogeneously broadened two-level ring laser model the stability of the cw laser oscillation in the presence of a passive medium is investigated. The passive material is treated similar to the active material, but without an external pumping mechanism. Stable and unstable regions are shown for various parameters. The stability region of the cw solution becomes extremly small for certain parameters.

Notes: Abstract Design and operating caracteristics of high pulse repetition rate NH3 laser producing up to 20 W of average output power are described. The NH3 laser, operating in the 12–13 μm region was optically pumped with a high pulse repetition rate TEA CO2 laser. Dependences of the NH3 laser output on the pump energy, ammonia and buffer gas pressures and pulse repetition rate have been studied. The conversion efficiency of up to 16% has been received.

Notes: Abstract In 1972 average mixing ratio of methane in the troposphere was 1.41 ppm and 1.3 ppmv for the northern and southern hemisphere, respectively, which corresponds to a total amount of 4×1015 g of CH4 present in the atmosphere. Most is of recent biologic origin.14C analyses show that no more than 20 percent is released by fossil sources. The various ecosystems producing CH4 are discussed and the total annual production is estimated to lie between 5.5×1014 g/yr and 11×1014 g/yr. The corresponding turnover times for atmospheric CH4 range from 4 to 7 yrs. The destruction of CH4 takes place mainly in the troposphere, most probably through the reaction of CH4 + OH ↠ CH3 + H2O. About 10 percent of the CH4 is destroyed in the stratosphere. The CH4 cycle contributes on the order of 1 percent to the atmospheric carbon cycle.

Notes: Abstract Rooting responses and ethylene production by hypocotyl cuttings from etiolated mung-bean seedlings treated with the auxins α-naphthaleneacetic acid, γ-(indole-3)-n-butyric acid (IBA) and 2,4,5-trichloro-phenoxypropionic acid were determined. There was no relationship between the abilities of the auxins to induce root formation and their capacities for inducing ethylene production. Studies with mixtures of 3-indoleacetic acid, a poor stimulator of rooting but an effective inducer of ethylene production, and IBA, an effective rooting stimulator but a poor inducer of ethylene production, exposure of cuttings to ethylene or (2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid (Ethephon), hypobaric storage (150 mb) of treated cuttings, and exposure of auxin-treated cuttings to 7% CO2 also indicated that ethylene is not directly involved in initiation of adventitious roots in this plant material.

Notes: Abstract In vitro studies of IAA-induced cell elongation in Triticum aestivum have demonstrated that lead causes a large reduction in elongation. Inhibition of elongation can be reduced by increasing the concentration of IAA, or by the addition of calcium. The inhibitory effect appears to be linked with changes in the properties of the cell walls. Experiments are described which show that lead becomes bound strongly to certain chemical substances involved in cell wall architecture.

Notes: Abstract The accumulation of intracellular storage granules (0.03–0.5 μm) byMethylococcus NCIB 11083 when grown under conditions of ammonia limitation with methane as the sole source of carbon and energy was inversely proportional to the dilution rate. The isolated material was composed entirely of glucose residues and the infra-red spectrum exhibited characteristic absorption bands at 925 cm-1, 845 cm-1 and 745±4 cm-1, indicating the presence of α (1→4) glycosidic linkages. The polymer dissolved in hot water to give an opalescent solution that formed a violet iodine complex with an absorption maximum at 550 nm, identical to that observed with reference amylopectin. The percentage of the polysaccharide released as maltose by the action of β- and α-amylases was 55–64% and 80–90% respectively, values very similar to those obtained by the action of these enzymes on reference amylopectin and glycogen. Methylation analysis indicated that the average interior and exterior chain lengths of the polymer were 2.7 and 10.0 glucose units respectively and confirmed that theMethylococcus polyglucose is a branched polymer composed of units joined by 1→4 and 1→6 linkages. The number average molecular weight of the polymer is 2–4.5×105. The stored polymer was metabolised by the organism and its metabolism resulted in the synthesis of protein.
