Notes: Abstract Rye anthers were cultured in medium with colchicine for periods of 12–24 h. Unaffected PMCs showed normal meiotic pairing in the same anthers in which other PMCs showed several degrees of asynapsis (or desynapsis), c-meiosis or anaphase irregularities. Pairing was affected only in cells which were at mid zygotene at the time of treatment initiation. Chiasma terminalization and release was possible in the absence of a functional spindle. Possibly, spindle function is more sensitive to colchicine than pairing. Variation within anthers can be adscribed to gradients in stage and development. The possibility of differences in penetration of colchicine must be recognized.

Notes: Summary Ethidium bromide and other cationic dyes have been found to inhibit movalent cation uptake. This dye also produces in a K+-free medium an efflux of K+ which could be of the electrogenic type. The study of the effects of the same cationic dyes on Ca2+ uptake showed a large stimulation of the uptake rate of the divalent cation of more than tenfold. The analysis of the effects of one of the cationic dyes on Ca2+ uptake indicated that the efflux of K+ is of the electrogenic type and can drive the uptake of the divalent cation. Kinetic data on Ca2+ uptake indicate that, both under “normal” or under stimulated conditions, the divalent cation is taken up by the same transport system. The addition of ethidium bromide, besides, can stimulate the uptake of Mn2+ and14C-glycine and could be a good weapon to magnify and study some of the characteristics of ion transport systems in yeast.

Notes: Abstract The connection between stochastic electrodynamics (SED) and the quantum theory of matter is further explored. The main result is that the Fokker-Planck-like equation of SED can be recast into the form of a Schrödinger equation with radiative corrections, when the system is close to a state of equilibrium. The phase-space distribution can be written as Wigner's pseudo-distribution plus corrections due to the nonlinearity of the external force and to radiative effects. The radiative corrections predicted by the theory, namely the Lamb shift and the decay of excited atomic states, coincide with those predicted by QED. Moreover, the theory offers a clear physical interpretation of these phenomena as due to the coupling of the electric dipole of the system with the zero-point radiation field and to radiation reaction, respectively.
