Beschreibung: Cultured skin fibroblasts from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are more resistant to dexamethasone toxicity than are normal cells. We now report that, when fibroblasts cultured from obligate CF heterozygotes are exposed to dexamethasone, they have an intermediate survival compared to normal and homozygous CF cells. When dexamethasone survival was tested on cells from four patients undergoing amniocentesis, cells from a woman at risk of producing a child with CF showed significant dexamethasone resistance, similar to that of fibroblasts derived from lnown CF homozygotes; the other amniotic cell specimens showed dexamethasone sensitivity similar to that of normal skin fibroblasts. These data suggest that the dexamethasone resistance previously observed in skin fibroblasts may also be useful in the prenatal diagnosis of CF.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Breslow, J L -- Epstein, J -- Fontaine, J H -- Forbes, G B -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jul 14;201(4351):180-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/663650" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Observations made with the Rotation Modulation Collimator system (RMC) have revealed that X-ray source X-4 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC X-4) is most likely part of a binary system. An analysis of the star's coordinates is presented, with attention given to orbital period and flux intensity variations. Stellar mass and orbital inclination angle are estimated for both X-4 and its companion star.

Beschreibung: Data on the X-ray structure of the Perseus cluster of galaxies in the energy range from 2 to 10 keV are analyzed which were obtained during a 12-day observation with the rotating modulation collimator aboard SAS 3. In particular, the nature of the compact X-ray source coincident with NGC 1275 is examined. The data are shown to confirm the presence of a diffuse region of X-ray emission surrounding the nucleus of NGC 1275; it is found that a model which also includes a point source at the nucleus is consistent with the data if the point contribution is no larger than 20% of the X-ray flux detected within 3 to 5 arcmin of the galaxy. The results suggest that NGC 1275 may have accreted a large amount of gas from the intracluster medium and that the flux from the possible point source is consistent with a synchro/Compton model.

Beschreibung: Limits to the first-order Compton scattering, brightness temperature, and angular size of the compact radio source AO0235+164 were calculated on the basis of a flux density of less than about 1 microJy at 10 to the 18th Hz calculated from observations of the source with the rotating modulation collimator aboard the SAS 3 X-ray observatory. It was found that the maximum brightness temperature at this frequency is less than 2.4 times 10 to the 11th K, corresponding to a minimum angular size of 0.38 msec of arc, assuming the synchrotron self-absorption turnover coefficient is 0.5. On the basis of the distance implied by the largest redshift present, the energy contained in relativistic particles and the magnetic field are calculated, and the ratio of particle to magnetic energy is greater than 10, so the dynamics must be particle dominated. This indicates relativistic expansion if the mean energy per particle is comparable to or greater than the rest of those particles that neutralize the electron plasma.

Beschreibung: The final results of the search for Si XIII and Si XIV line emission, using the ANS Bragg crystal spectrometer, are presented. No positive line detection was achieved in any of the measurements made on several types of cosmic object; i.e., a transient X-ray source, close binary systems, supernova remnants, GX sources, and clusters of galaxies. Three-sigma upper limits for discrete line emission from these objects are reported and compared with line strengths inferred from other proportional-counter and Bragg spectrometer data. The present upper limit of 1.0 eV for the equivalent width of a narrow Si XIV line emission from the X-ray nova A0620-00 is an order of magnitude lower than previous limits set by other experiments.

Beschreibung: X-rays from the compact galaxy III Zw 2 have been detected with the rotating modulation collimator on board SAS 3. The (2-10-keV) flux is (4.3 + or - 0.5) by 10 to the -11th power erg/sq cm per sec, which corresponds to a luminosity of 1.4 by 10 to the 45th power erg/s at 530 Mpc. Subsequent radio observations between 1.46 and 90 GHz were made at the NRAO Very Large Array and 36-foot (11-m) installations. The radio spectrum rises sharply toward higher frequencies and, below about 100 GHz, is indicative of a self-absorbed synchrotron spectrum from an extremely compact, rapidly evolving object.
