Notes:
Small-angle X-ray scattering measurements have been made on lithium-ammonia and sodium-ammonia solutions for a number of concentrations and temperatures. The salient features of the scattering curves are the critical scattering observed near the critical mixing point and the noncritical scattering characterized by a maximum at the larger angles of the small-angle region. With decreasing metal-ion concentration, the position of the maximum moves to smaller angles and becomes less pronounced. The noncritical scattering was shown to be consistent with that expected for a system of spherical scattering centers (metal ions solvated by four ammonia molecules) of approximately 7 to 8 Å diameter. Radial distribution functions were calculated in terms of this model. Values for the extrapolated zero-angle scattering were used to calculate Scc(0), the concentration partial structure factor of Bhatia and Thornton. The X-ray determinations of Scc(0) were found to be in reasonable agreement with previous values based on thermodynamic results.
