Notes: Abstract By means of an integrated source-specimen technique the temperature dependence of positron lifetimes and annihilation lineshapes has been measured, on the same specimens of gold and cadmium from 4.2K to the melting points, and also in electronirradiated and quenched gold. The anomalous temperature dependence of positron annihilation at intermediate temperatures (200 to 350 K in Cd, 270 to 750 K in Au) discovered by Lichtenberger, Schulte, and MacKenzie is confirmed. The data are incompatible with the idea that the intermediate temperature dependence is due to thermal expansion. They are well explained by an extension of the trapping model which includes the formation of metastable self-trapped positrons. From lineshape measurements after electron irradiation at 180 K and after quenching it is deduced that the trapping rate of positrons at vacancy-type defects in Au is temperature independent below room temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclizations with 1-nitro-2-anilino-ethylenesThe reaction of 1-nitro-2-anilino-2-methylthio-ethylenes 1 with oxalyl chloride yields the substituted 4-nitropyrrol-2,3-diones 4, and with chlorocarbonyl-sulfenylchloride the 5-nitro-thiazolones 6. The methylthio group from 6 can be exchanged by amines. From 1-nitro-2,2-bis(anilino)ethylenes 2 - available from 1-nitro-2,2-bis(methylthio)-ethylene and anilines - and the same reagents, the substituted 2-nitromethylene-imidazolidine-4,5-diones 5 and the thiazolo[4,5-d]thiazoledione 9 result. The condensation of 1-nitro-2-anilino-2-hydrazino-ethylene 3 with derivatives of carboxylic acids yields 2-nitromethyl-s-triazole 12, with diacetyl the substituted 3-nitromethylene-as-triazine 13.

Description / Table of Contents: The LiPH2 ·1 MonoglymeA convenient synthesis of the crystalline LiPH2 · 1 monoglyme is reported by metallating PH3 with n-butyllithium in monoglyme (86% yield relative to n-butyllithium). LiPH2 · 1 monoglyme is stable at room temperature and reasonably soluble in thf, mono-, di-, and triglyme. On pumping (oil pump) it decomposes to “Li2PH” liberating PH3 and monoglyme. “Li2PH” is insoluble in the above mentioned solvents.
