Notes: The notion of the “rise of the Sunbelt” and the “decline of the Northeast” has raised the spectre of relentless economic disintegration of the northeastern states and the lure of boundless affluence across the southern and southwestern rim. What is myth and what is reality in these emerging perceptions? This paper reviews the trends of the past fifteen years, and speculates on the possibility of unsettled economic weather in the Sunbelt and valid investment potentials in the Northeast. Alternative future scenarios are suggested in the light of the marked acceleration of the thrusts of change of the last five years.

Notes: [Auszug] THE pace of astronomical and space research, the speed with which technological developments in optical and radio astronomy are implemented, the inventiveness of the astronomical mind and the productivity of the astronomy book publishers never cease to amaze me. This year, like others, the ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE history of astronomy is a history of man struggling with new ideas and painstakingly trying to make accurate observations of celestial objects. Ideas were easier and their reporting is more widespread; flat earths, geocentric systems, perfectly smooth and spherical moons and planets, crop up in ...

Notes: [Auszug] HUGHES REPLIES-The significance of the triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the constellation of Pisces1 around 7 BC can be beter judged by reference to Fig. 1. At no time do the planets approach closer than 1 , about twice the diameter of the full moon. All the stars in this region pale ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN the late 1960s, Elizabeth Neufeld and her colleagues showed that 'corrective factors' secreted by skin fibro-blasts established from normal individuals could eliminate intracellular deposits of mucopolysaccharides that build up in mutant cells established from the skin of mucopolysaccharidoses ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have previously reported that the ingestion of C.d. results in increased calcium absorption and induced calcium binding protein (CaBP) synthesis in chicks fed a diet containing strontium5. Strontium blocks the renal 1-hydroxylase enzyme which converts vitamin D3 to active 1-hydroxylated ...

Notes: [Auszug] MASS is one of the more awkward quantities to measure in an astronomical context. Usually it is derived from a careful analysis of the perturbing effect the gravitational field of one body has on the orbit of another or, less satisfactorily, by simply multiplying the volume of the object by an ...

Notes: [Auszug] METEOR streams are elliptical rings of dust containing a myriad of particles all moving with orbits very similar to that of the comet which ejected them as it decayed. The stream particles move through the general Solar System dust cloud which is made up of particles with random orbits. Cloud ...

Notes: [Auszug] COMETARY missions have been dis-. cussed in varying degrees of detail on both sides of the Atlantic for well over a decade; spacecraft have been chosen, experiments have been planned, data and science returns estimated, impact hazards evaluated. Notes: [Auszug] ABSOLUTE ages of planetary features can be determined in principle by dividing the observed crater number density N by the crater production rate, F. So age = N/F. William K. Hartmann (Planetary Science Institute, Tuscon, Arizona) is of the opinion that 'the emphasis in funding, research and ...
