Notes: Abstract Overall comparisons of marine pelagic productions in different systems are speculative to a high degree. Yet they often bring to our attention processes which have not been sufficiently investigated. One such process may be the decrease of fish production due to the change in the diatom/flagellate ratio. The following hypothesis is discussed in the light of recent investigations: An increasing development of flagellates caused by some types of pollution or climatic changes not only may increase the number of trophic levels and thereby, decrease fish production, but also may cause a change in the flow of biomass from fish to ctenophores and other planktonic predators, thereby again decreasing the harvest available for human consumption.

Notes: Abstract Linear unidirectional dependence of one population upon another is rather atypical among zooplankton species, as carnivory is not only characteristic of high trophic levels but also part of omnivory in many species of copepods. The feeding on its predatorjuveniles may be important for the survival of a copepod population, more in regard to the impact on the predator than to the nutritional benefit obtained. Such complex interrelationships are important for predictive ecosystem models. Ctenophore-copepod interrelationships have been analysed in experiments, and the results produced have been used for constructing simulation models. Details of experimentation and of modelling are described and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The final state of the primaries of binary systems with initial massesM 1i=10M ⊙ to 15M ⊙ is derived from the mass of their C/O-cores. The possibility of a second stage of mass transfer towards the secondary is considered. It turns out that the critical mass for the bifurcation is about 14M ⊙: stars with larger masses in this range are the progenitors of neutron stars, while the lower mass stars are the ancestors of white dwarfs.

Notes: Abstract For a representative set of atmospheric and atomic parameters we determine the strengths of solar dielectronic recombination lines originating in ions with Z ⩽ 6 at frequencies of ≳70 GHz. We compare the line strengths derived here with those calculated by Berger and Simon (1972) and find that our values for representative ions with Z≲3 are lower by a factor 102–103, being mainly the result of the inclusion of the electronic pressure broadening. We outline the requirements for the detection of lines, which must establish an upper limit of at least ≈10-5 for the line to continuum ratio.

Notes: Electric birefringence measurements of suspensions of T3 and T7 bacteriophages in 10-2 M phosphate buffer, pH 6.9, show that there is a difference in their rotational diffusion coefficient. The values corrected to 25°C and water viscosity are D25,w = 4630 ± 130 sec-1 and D25,w = 5290 ± 260 sec-1 for T3 and T7, respectively. The value obtained from shell model calculations (according to Filson and Bloomfield) is D25,w = 4500 ± 600 sec-1. The apparent permanent dipole moments are 4.5 × 10-26 C·m and 1.7 × 10-26 C·m for T3 and T7, respectively. For both phage particles the intrinsic optical anisotropy is +7.2 × 10-3. It is shown that this anisotropy is mainly due to the DNA molecule inside the head of the phage. Its positive value means that there exists an excess orientation of the DNA helix perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the particle. For T7 an unexpectedly large increase of Δns and Ksp occurs at a glycerol concentration of about 30% (v/v). This increase is interpreted as being caused by a change of the shape of the particle and/or a change in the secondary structure of the DNA inside the head of the bacteriophage.

Notes: Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of poly(dA), poly(dT), poly(dA)·poly(dT), and poly[d(A-T)]·poly[d(T-A)] have been measured as a function of temperature. From these data difference spectra have been calculated by subtracting the spectrum measured at low temperature from the spectra measured at higher temperatures. The CD difference spectra obtained upon melting of the two double-stranded polymers are very similar. From a comparison of these difference spectra with calculated ones it is shown that optical transitions near 272 nm (on A) and 288 nm (most probably on T) are present. The premelting changes of the CD spectrum of poly[d(A-t)]·poly[d(T-A)] are due to a change in conformation in which the secondary structure goes from a C- to B-type spectrum by increasing the A-type nature of the polymer. Such a change is not observed for poly(dA)·poly(dT). Instead, a transition between two different B-type geometries occurs.

Notes: Measurements of birefringence are used to study electro-optical and hydrodynamical properties of the bacteriophages T2 and T6 under conditions in which the fibers are folded back along the tail. The rotational diffusion coefficients corrected to 25°C and water viscosity (D25,w) are 325 ± 12 sec-1 and 322 ± 12 sec-1, respectively. These values differ significantly from those reported for T4(D25,w = 280 ± 9 sec-1). This might be due to a difference in configuration. It could be shown that the orientation of T-even bacteriophage particles in the electric field is largely due to a permanent dipole moment. This dipole moment can be calculated from the measurements and appeared to be dependent on ionic strength. At low ionic strength (pH 6) the dipole moments of T2 and T6 approach the values 4.1 × 10-25 C·m (1.24 × 105 D) and 6.6 × 10-25 C·m (2.0 × 105 D), respectively, which is much larger than the value of 0.8 × 10-25 C·m (0.24 × 105 D) found for T4. An increase in ionic strength decreases the permanent dipole moment. This effect can be described by a Debye-Hückel model of the screening of surface charges by counterions in the case of T4 and T6. For T2 the picture is more complicated, as an increase in buffer concentration causes a change in configuration.
