Notes: The techniques of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to study the locus of failure of epoxy resin joints. The effects of a long water immersion and the application of a silane-based primer have also been studied. Results indicated that for dry joints fracture occurred near an epoxy resin/metal interface while with water-soaked unprimed joints, fracture occurred interfacially between the adhesive and iron oxide. The application of the primer to the metal surface prior to bonding prevented the formation of a water-formed oxide although fracture was then found to occur through the primer.

Notes: X-ray diffraction scans and infrared absorption spectra for the C-CI stretching region were obtained for a highly syndiotactic poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sample made by the urea clathrate method. When the polymer was annealed at a series of increasing temperatures up to 180°C, x-ray diffraction measurements showed that the crystallinity increases steadily with annealing temperature. Even at 50°C an increase above the original value of 63% was detectable and by 180°C it had reached 70% with a further increase to 78% after cooling to ambient temperature. There is a concurrent significant increase in the lateral crystallite dimensions. However, the infrared spectrum did not change, in agreement with the recent prediction of Moore and Krimm that there is no observable band splitting from interchain interaction in crystalline regions, thus indicating that these C-CI bands cannot be used as a measure of crystallinity. The results from computer curve fitting of the spectra suggest that at least 85% of the polymer consists of long planar syndiotactic sequences and there is therefore substantial order along the chain direction. A mechanism for the increase in crystallinity on annealing, involving the lateral ordering of these regular chains, is discussed. Furthermore, as the temperature is raised some amorphous material is converted to a nematic phase, and this may crystallize during the subsequent cooling.

Description: An approach to the liquefaction of hydrogen was developed which permits the application of standard centrifugal compressors in place of reciprocating machines. A second fluid, such as propane, is added to the hydrogen prior to compression to form a mixture having a molecular weight much greater than that of hydrogen alone, so that a standard centrifugal compressor can be used. After compression, the mixture is cooled to cryogenic temperature levels where the propane condenses out of the mixture and is separated as a liquid. Since a small amount of deuterium is produced during hydrogen liquefaction, the potential of recovering deuterium and selling it as a co-product was investigated. Deuterium, in the form of heavy water, can be used in certain nuclear reactors as a neutron moderator to reduce the neutron velocity and enhance the probability of neutron collision with uranium nucleii.

Description: Incident overpressure data from frangible spheres pressurized with a flash-evaporating fluid in liquid and vapor form were obtained in laboratory experiments. Glass spheres under higher than ambient internal pressure of Freon-12 were purposely burst to obtain time histories of overpressure. Nondimensional peak pressures, arrival and duration times, and impulses are presented, and whenever possible plotted and compared with compiled data for Pentolite high-explosive. The data are generally quite repeatable and show differences from blast data produced by condensed high-explosives.

Description: Properties of the energetic electron (E greater than or approximately equal to 200 keV) magnetopause layer along the distant magnetotail have been studied with Caltech instrumentation aboard IMP-8 for approximately 60 spacecraft orbits. The cross-sectional area of the layer appears to increase by a factor of approximately 5 with increasing geomagnetic activity, and the average unidirectional electron flux within the layer increases by a factor of approximately 4. The energy carried by electrons greater than or approximately equal to 200 keV ranges from approximately 10 to the 14th ergs per second to approximately 10 to the 15th ergs per second. Extrapolation to include all electrons greater than 1 keV suggests total energy flow ranging from approximately 3 x 10 to the 15th ergs per second at quiet times to approximately 5 x 10 to the 18th ergs per second at magnetically disturbed times.

Description: A simple rocket-borne system has been developed for deriving nitric oxide concentration in the mesosphere from measurements of resonantly scattered solar ultraviolet radiation in the NO gamma band near 2150 A. The NO signal is extracted from a background of Rayleigh-scattered light by a direct measurement of this scattered light by use of an NO absorption cell. This system was utilized to measure the NO concentration above White Sands, New Mexico, in the altitude range from 69 to 101 km. The derived NO profile shows a concentration of about 30 million per cu cm at 67 and 100 km with a deep valley (more than an order of magnitude less) at about 84 km. Comparison with model calculations indicates that the time constant for NO chemistry is smaller than or comparable with that for transport.

Description: A pure thermochemical cycle is a system of linked regenerative chemical reactions which accepts only water and heat and produces hydrogen. Thermochemical cycles are potentially a more efficient and cheaper means of producing hydrogen from water than is the generation of electricity followed by electrolysis. The Energy Storage Systems Division of the Department of Energy is currently funding a national program on thermochemical hydrogen production. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is responsible for the technical management of this program. The goal is to develop a cycle which can potentially operate with an efficiency greater than 40% using a heat source providing a maximum available temperature of 1150 K. A closed bench-scale demonstration of such a cycle would follow. This cycle would be labeled a 'reference cycle' and would serve as a baseline against which future cycles would be compared.

Description: The program structure is presented. The activities of the thermochemical cycles program are grouped according to the following categories: (1) specific cycle development, (2) support research and technology, (3) cycle evaluation. Specific objectives and status of on-going activities are discussed. Chemical reaction series for the production of hydrogen are presented. Efficiency and economic evaluations are also discussed.

Description: An energetic electron layer is found immediately adjacent to, and outside of, the magnetopause surface along the distant magnetotail. The layer has been detected by instrumentation aboard the earth-orbiting spacecraft IMP-8 and is observed for electrons with energies above about 200 keV. The present study shows that such electrons form a layer about 3 earth radii thick and are strongly streaming in a well-ordered pattern, especially along the dusk magnetopause. The energy dissipation implied by the persistent flow may be a direct indication of nearly continuous magnetic merging at or near the magnetopause.

Description: Small-scale experiments were conducted to obtain data on incident overpressure at various distances from bursting pressurized spheres. Complete time histories of blast overpressure generated by rupturing glass spheres under high internal pressure were obtained using eight side-on pressure transducers. A scaling law is presented, and its nondimensional parameters are used to compare peak overpressures, arrival times, impulses, and durations for different initial conditions and sizes of blast source. The nondimensional data are also compared, whenever possible, with results of theoretical calculations and compiled data for Pentolite high explosive. The scaled data are repeatable and show significant differences from blast waves generated by condensed high-explosives.
