Description: Large-area backside illuminated charge-coupled device imagers have been fabricated using double level aluminum transfer electrode technology. Devices with 100 x 160 and 400 x 400 resolution elements have been fabricated using buried channel technology for high charge transfer efficiency. Detailed optical characterization has been performed on these imagers over the temperature range -40 to +24 C and at several operating frequencies between 10 kHz and 1 MHz.

So verlangen z.B.

Description: The Apollo Soyuz Test Project Geodynamics Experiment was performed to assess the feasibility of tracking and recovering high frequency components of the earth gravity field by utilizing a synchronous orbiting tracking station such as Applications Technology Satellite 6. Two prime areas of data collection were selected for this experiment. The first area is the center of the African continent, and the second area is the Indian Ocean depression centered at latitude 5 N and longitude 75 E. Preliminary results show that the detectability objective of the experiment has been achieved in both areas as well as in several additional anomalous areas around the globe. Gravity anomalies of the Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges of ocean trenches, and of the Diamantina depth are specific examples.

Description: A two phase program encompassing the redesign and fabrication of a solar collector which is low in cost and aesthetically appealing is described. Phase one work reviewed the current collector design and developed a low-cost design based on specific design/performance/cost requirements. Throughout this phase selected collector component materials were evaluated by testing and by considering cost, installation, maintainability and durability. The resultant collector design was composed of an absorber plate, insulation, frame, cover, desiccant and sealant. In Phase two, three collector prototypes were fabricated and evaluated for both nonthermal and thermal characteristics. Tests included static load tests of covers, burst pressure tests of absorber plates, and tests for optical characteristics of selective absorber plate coatings. The three prototype collectors were shipped to Marshall Space Flight Center for use in their solar heating and cooling test facility.

Description: Broadband photometric observations of IRC + 10216 in five wavelength intervals from 50 to 1000 microns are reported. The observed radiation is interpreted as thermal emission from dust in the extended molecular cloud heated by the compact 2-20-micron source at the cloud core. The shape of the 50-1000-micron spectrum suggests that the emissivity of the dust particles varies approximately as the inverse wavelength over this spectral interval. The mass of dust inferred from the far-infrared emission is comparable with the mass of heavy molecules in the cloud.

Description: Results from the aeroshell-mounted neutral mass spectrometer on Viking 1 indicate that the upper atmosphere of Mars is composed mainly of CO2 with trace quantities of N2, Ar, O, O2, and CO. The mixing ratios by volume relative to CO2 for N2, Ar, and O2 are about 0.06, 0.015, and 0.003, respectively, at an altitude near 135 kilometers. Molecular oxygen is a major component of the ionosphere according to results from the retarding potential analyzer. The atmosphere between 140 and 200 kilometers has an average temperature of about 180 plus or minus 20 deg K. Atmospheric pressure at the landing site for Viking 1 was 7.3 millibars at an air temperature of 241 deg K. The descent data are consistent with the view that CO2 should be the major constituent of the lower Martian atmosphere.

Description: Observational data are presented on ten brief X-ray bursts, recurrent at nearly equal time intervals, recorded during a two-day observation of 3U 1820-30 in the globular cluster NGC 6624 with the wide-field modulation collimator detectors on the SAS-3 X-ray observatory. The occurrence times were fitted by least squares to a linear sequence with an rms deviation of 621 sec, corresponding to a phase jitter of 3.9%. The bursts were observed in two energy channels. For a sequence of five of the most clearly observed bursts, the 2-6 keV rate rose to its peak value in about 1 sec and then decayed to preburst level in about 10 sec. The 6-11 keV rate rose more slowly and decayed similarly. The smooth decay of their averaged light curve suggests the temporal evolution may have a geometrical origin, where Compton scattering in a surrounding cloud of hot plasma stretches the pulse out and causes a progressive hardening of the spectrum.

Description: A system for remotely measuring velocities present in discrete volumes of air is described. A CO2 laser beam is focused by a telescope at such a volume, a focal volume, and within the focusable range, near field, of the telescope. The back scatter, or reflected light, principally from the focal volume, passes back through the telescope and is frequency compared with the original frequency of the laser, and the difference frequency or frequencies represent particle velocities in that focal volume.
