Notes: The universal calibration for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has been applied to amylose and dextrans. The molecular weight distribution of amylose has been measured starting from known data on dextrans. The agreement found between the molecular weight averages resulting from GPC and those obtained by other methods justifies the procedure followed. The GPC measurements were performed with dimethylsulfoxide as the elution solvent and deactivated silica gel (Porasil) as the column-filling material.

Notes: Polystyrene networks prepared by anionic polymerization have been characterized by small-angle neutron scattering. Two kinds of systems have been examined:(A) networks with labelled branch points allowing characterization of the spatial distribution of crosslinking points; (B) networks containing a low proportion of chains labelled with perdeuterated polystyrene in order to characterize the conformation of individual elastic chains of the polymeric network. The dependence of the results on swelling and uniaxial extension is discussed.

Notes: Thermally stimulated and isothermal depolarization currents of three low-density polyethylenes are investigated in the temperature range 80-320°K. The thermally stimulated current spectra can be analyzed in terms of a continuous relaxation time spectrum. This spectrum can be resolved into three Gaussian distributions of activation energies centered near 140°K (γ-relaxation), 205°K, and 245°K (β-relaxation) in agreement with electrical and mechanical loss factor measurements. The experimental observation are explained in terms of reorienting dipoles, coupling the molecular motion to the electrical field.

Notes: The Fröhlich model of discrete reorienting dipoles has been extended to include a continuous spectrum of relaxation times and applied to the measurement of thermally stimulated and isothermal depolarization currents of low-density polyethylenes. The experiments can only be interpreted if the detailed history of polarization and depolarization prior to the actual current measurements are taken into consideration. With certain simplification the spectrum of activation energies can be directly derived from the complete thermally stimulated current profile.

Notes: Styrene was copolymerized in bulk with vinyltriethoxysilane at 80°C and vinyltriacetoxysilane at 60, 80, and 100°C with the use of benzoyl peroxide as an initiator at low conversions. Copolymer composition was determined from the silicon content and reactivity ratios were calculated by the conventional scheme of copolymerization. The low r1 value (styrene) in the styrene-vinyltriacetoxysilane system (St-VTAS) as compared to styrene-vinyltriethoxysilane (St-VTES) copolymerization may be attributed to higher reactivity of VTAS towards the polystyryl radical. Further, in the St-VTAS system, r1 tends to decrease with increasing polymerization temperature. The influence of silicon comonomer on properties of the copolymers (intrinsic viscosity, solubility, dielectric and thermal behavior) was studied.

Notes: The algebra of the representation of the special unitary group SU(2), the universal covering of the proper rotation group SO(3), is studied in a nonstandard basis. We are using a basis adapted to a chain of type SU(2) ⊃ … ⊃ G″ ⊃ G′ ⊃ G. The introduction of such a chain enables us to label, at least partially, the elements of the irreducible tensorial sets under SU(2) with irreducible representations of G, G″ G″, …. We are thus led to introduce the restriction SU(2) → … → G″ → G′ → G in the Wigner-Racah algebra of the group SU(2). The physical interest of this machinery lies in the fact that the double group of any point symmetry group belongs, up to an isomorphism, to the considered chain. The formalism described in this paper thus appears to be useful in molecular and solid-state calculations. It is particularly efficient in the fields of vibrational-rotational and electronic spectroscopy of molecules. In Appendix A the master formulae, principally the Wigner-Eckart-Racah theorem, for the Wigner-Racah algebra of a chain of compact topological groups (discrete or continuous) are briefly discussed. Lastly, a programme for computing Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for a chain SU(2) ⊃ … ⊃ G″ ⊃ G′ ⊃ G and numerical results for chains isomorphic to SU(2) ⊃ O′ ⊃ D′4 ⊃ D′2 are described in Appendix B.

Notes: The methodology developed in earlier papers is used to compute the 6j symbols and 3jm factors that arise in the group chain SO3 ⊃ T ⊃ C1. The relevant character theory is given and the 2j and 3j symbols calculated. Selection rules are used to predict which j symbols or jm factors are necessarily zero, and then a set of 6j fundamentals computed for T. The complete set of primitive 6j symbols are then computed by application of the orthogonality and Racah backcoupling relations. Primitive 3jm factors are calculated for SO3 ⊃ T and T ⊃ C3 and, from these, all the 3jm factors for T ⊃ C3 and some of those for SO3 ⊃ T computed. A complete table of non-equivalent 6j symbols for T and 3jm factors for T ⊃ C3 is given, together with a table for SO3 ⊃ T of all 3jm factors with j ≤ 2.

Notes: A new effective semiempirical method of optimization of one-electron wave-functions has been proposed without a necessity to determine any exact many-electron wave-function. The method designed for LCAO MO calculations is based on a concept of interacting quasi-particles and on nonorthogonal spin-orbitals. “Mixing” of the pure single-particle wave-functions is optimized by means of the procedure which requires only one empirical parameter for each considered state of a whole system. The procedure results in optimal distribution of total electron charge between the individual spin-orbitals. The general method has been illustrated with calculations for the ground state of lithium atom.
