Notes: [Auszug] This division of labour has important theoretical and clinical implications but its basis is not understood. However, I have found that pink McCollough effect hues, perceived by subjects after exposure to a green square-wave grating, are reported to be stronger in the left visual field even when ...

Notes: [Auszug] In preliminary experiments, extracts made by Brij-58 lysis13 or lysozyme lysis of freeze-thawed cells14 were tested for ATP-dependent ultraviolet-endonuclease activity, but results with these extracts were unsatisfactory. Soluble extracts were then prepared by a procedure based on gentle lysozyme ...

Notes: [Auszug] Using a better defined antigen, the XI leukaemia-specific antigen, Sato et al.4 demonstrated that the success of transplantation immunity, induced in specifically immunised mice, is H-2 dependent. Antitumour resistance is domi-nantly inherited in those Fi hybrids which have appropriate Ir gene(s). ...

Notes: [Auszug] The technique has been described in detail elsewhere3 Male chicks were assigned to either an isolation (n = 3) or isolation and testosterone primer (/? -3) group. In the latter chicks 20 mg of testosterone propionate was subcutaneously injected on day 6 after hatching. On either day 15, 16 or 17 ...

Notes: Abstract The transfer of solute through a membrane separating two aqueous solutions is studied with the time-dependent diffusion equation for composite media. By introducing new independent and dependent variables it is shown that the differential equations and boundary conditions can be transformed into a dimensionless form which does not explicitly depend on the diffusivities of the media. Laplace transforms are used to derive explicit solutions for the solute concentration as a function of position and time. It is shown that at large time the concentration approaches the equilibrium distribution exponentially. Explicit results are given for the decay time as a function of the parameters of the system. In addition, an accurate and simplified expression is derived for the decay time for the case of small membrane permeability. The accuracy of the analytic solutions for the concentration profiles is tested by comparing them with numerical results obtained by solving the diffusion equations by the method of finite differences. Excellent agreement is found.

Notes: Abstract Absolute differential cross-sections ofp+12C elastic scattering have been measured atθ cm=89.1°, 118.7°, 146.9° for bombarding energies between 0.3 and 2.0 MeV. Revised level parameters of the first three excited states in13N have been extracted with aR-matrix analysis. It is shown that the influence of the bound ground-state of13N has an appreciable effect on low-energy scattering. Recent predictions concerning Mott-Schwinger polarization are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The elastic scattering of 140-MeV16O and 175- and 252-MeV20Ne from235U has been measured. Experimental ratios of elastic to Rutherford scattering cross sections are analyzed in terms of both Fresnel scattering and optical models. The radius parameters derived from these analyses are found to be nearly independent of projectile energy. Total reaction cross sections are obtained and found to be in good agreement with the total fission cross section for these systems. Comparisons between the Fresnel theory and the optical model give generally good agreement. A simple formula which parameterizes the total reaction cross section in terms of the interaction radius is presented for16O and20Ne reactions.Nuclear Reactions:235U(16O,16O),E=140 MeV;235U(20Ne,20Ne),E=175 MeV, 252 MeV; measuredσ el; compared with Fresnel and optical models; deduced maximum angular momenta, interaction radii, total reaction cross section.

Notes: Summary After 3 weeks of starvation the bacterial light-organs of the bioluminescent shallow-water fishAnomalops katoptron cease to produce light. Because of a reduction of the number of symbionts in the cells of the light organ, it is concluded that the fish supplies its luminescent bacteria with nutrients out of its own metabolism. As a result of starving the fish, the luminescent bacteria decrease in number and finally cease to emit light.

Notes: Abstract A corn field partially under attack by armyworms was photographed in 1973 with 70 mm Aerochrome Infrared Type 2443 film and a Wratten 12 filter at scales of 1/15,840 and 1/6,336 during the early silking stage. In 1974, in the absence of armyworm defoliation, the field was again overflown at the same plant stage, and with the same camera/film/filter configuration used in 1973. Defoliation was not detectable on otherwise healthy corn plants (i.e., no drought stress); but defoliation was detected on plants already under stress due to drought.
