Notes: The heats of binding of protons ΔHb to three globular proteins, lysozyme, chymotrysinogen A, and oxidized cytochrome c, from pH 11-2 or lower at 25°C were determined by flow microcalorimetry. In addition, the acid-base titrations of chymotrypsinogen A and oxidized cytochrome c were investigated under conditions similar to those used in the calorimetric experiments. The results of the calorimetric experiments and the acid-base titrations for lysozyme and chymotrypsinogen A in the neutral and alkaline pH regions are in accord with the Linderström-Lang model with a pH-independent electrostatic factor. However, in order to interpret the results on oxidized cytochrome c in the same pH region, it is necessary to assume the protonation of two unidentified groups; one of these groups, with ΔHb = -18 kcal/mol and pKa = 9.4 was detected in previous work [Watt, G. D. & Sturtevant, J. M. (1969) Biochemistry 8, 4567]. The normal heats of protonation for carboxyl, ∊-amino, phenolic, α-amino, and imidazole groups on globular proteins as deduced from the study are 0, -10.5, -6.3, -10.0, and -6.3 kcal/mol, respectively. ΔHb of chymotrypsinogen A between pH 4.5 and 1.3 is +30 kcal/mol. This value, which is undoubtedly too large to be accounted for by the protonation of normal carboxyl groups, leads to the conclusion that this protein undergoes a pH-induced conformational change in this pH region. The same idea can be applied to explain the abnormal ΔHb observed for oxidized cytochrome c in the alkaline pH region.

Description / Table of Contents: Some possible by-products of epoxy resins prepared by reaction of bisphenol A with epichlorhydrin were synthesized, and the gel chromatography behaviour when mixed with the epoxy resins was investigated. The most important by-product, which appears as a shoulder of the monomerpeak in the gelchromatogram of technical resins, is present at a relatively higher concentration compared to other byproducts. This product is obtained by reaction of one OH-group of the bisphenol A molecule to form a chlorhydrin ether and the other reacting to form a glycidyl ether.

Notes: Polyimides were prepared by reacting 3,3′-sulfonyl-bis(phenyl isocyanate) [SDI] with pyromellitic dianhydride [PMDA] and also with 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride [BPTD]. Their properties were compared with those obtained by reacting 4,4′-methylene-bis(phenyl isocyanate) [MDI] with respective dianhydrides.

Notes: Hardened coment pastes with water-to-cement (w/c) ratios of 0.4 and 0.6 and hydration times of one, three, seven, and 28 days were oven dried and subsequently impregnated with an epoxy resin formulation which was then polymerized in situ at 75°C. Portland cement mortars containing Ottawa sand and asbestos fibers as filler were also subjected to this impregnation process. Dynamic elastic moduli (E′) were measured at audio frequencies over a range of temperatures (100-400°K). Experimental values were compared with moduli calculated using various theoretical approaches based on two-phase composite materials theory. Best agreement between experimental and calculated results occurs when Wu's theory for spherical polymer inclusions was applied to a cement-based matrix. In the case of polymer-impregnated mortars, experimental and theoretical results are in closest agreement at low temperatures and at low volume fraction of filler.

Notes: An experimental study of foam extrusion was carried out to determine the effect of processing variables on the quality of the foam produced. For the study, the chemical blowing agent azodicarbonamide was used, together with an activator and a nucleating agent, to produce thermoplastic foams of low-density polyethylenes. The quality of foam was determined from photomicrographs and the tensile properties of extrudate samples. It was found that the percent elongation correlates with the foam density and that the cell structure (cell size and its distribution) correlates with the ultimate tensile properties of the foam produced. Also, an experimental study was carried out to observe the growth of gas bubbles as the polymer melt containing a blowing agent flows through a rectangular channel constructed of quartz. This experiment helped us to interpret the curved pressure profile of the polymer melt containing a blowing agent as the melt approaches the die exit, whereas the polymer without a blowing agent shows a linear pressure profile.

Notes: Hardened cement paste (HCP) specimens were prepared with hydration times of 1, 3, 7, 28, and 180 days. Specimens were oven dried and subsequently impregnated with methyl methacrylate, tert-butylstyrene, polyethylene glycol, and an epoxy resin system via a vacuum-pressure technique. Internal friction (Q-1) of in situ polymerized specimens was measured over the temperature range from 100° to 500°K. Results indicate that the internal friction spectra of polymer-impregnated specimens closely parallels the internal friction spectra of the bulk polymers used for impregnation. Magnitudes of the internal friction peaks in the impregnated specimens were found to be less than that expected on the basis of volume fraction of polymer present. These results are attributed to hindered motion at the cement/polymer interface.

Notes: Four new derivatives of 5-vinylsalicylic acid were prepared and their homopolymerization and copolymerization with acrylic acid and methacrylic acid investigated. Methyl 5-vinylsalicylate was prepared in a six-step synthesis from methyl salicylate in an overall yield of 35%. Acetylation in the last step yielded methyl 5-vinylacetylsalicylate. Hydrolysis of methyl 5-vinylsalicylate gave 5-vinylsalicylic acid which was acetylated to 5-vinylacetylsalicylic acid (5-vinyl aspirin). The 5-vinyl-substituted salicylic acid derivatives could be readily homopolymerized and copolymerized with acrylic acid and methacrylic acid to give various compositions of copolymers. It is worth noting that even the monomers with free phenol groups could be readily polymerized with azobisisobutyronitrile as radical initiator to high molecular weight polymers without interference of the phenolic OH group.
