Notes: The experimental conditions corresponding to those which are ascertained in a heat exchanger have been reconstructed in laboratory, with the possibility of performing very accurate electrochemical measurements. The electrochemical results have been compared with those derived from the use of simple geometric electrochemical cells. A mathematical correlation has been obtained between the electrochemical measurements obtained on a rotating cylinder and on the interior surface of a tube-shaped electrode, through which a solution flows. It has been concluded that: (1)the fluid-dynamic conditions, in the two electro-chemical cells we investigated, are comparable between each other, by an electrochemical point of view, when identical values of thickness of the limiting diffusion layers are obtained in the two cases.(2)it is possible to utilize simple cell geometries, such as the one employing a rotating cylinder, to investigate on the corrosion problems which happen in pipes or heat exchangers, in which an electrolyte flows, (even if its aggressiveness is as high as synthetic sea water is) as a function of fluid-dynamic conditions.

Notes: A corrosion fatigue testing device is presented which satisfies in a simple way many needs of this kind of research. In particular, the behaviour of stresses and strains vs. time is known at every point of the specimen; load may be varied and controlled; electrochemical measures are easily obtained; reproducibility is assured. The specimen acts as a cantilever beam. Results are presented and discussed concerning alterations in the structure of Armco iron as a consequence of the following two heat treatments: A. heating in a vacuum furnace at 760°C for two hours, quenching in water (some experiments have been performed quenching in NaCl solution or in aqueous oil emulsion) at 20 °C.B. heating in a vacuum furnace at 760°C for one hour, then at 925°C for four hours, quenching under the same conditions as in A.Sensitization and protection with respect to intergranular attack and consequently to the rate of fatigue corrosion cracking respectively follow the two above mentioned heat treatments.

Notes: Assuming that the rate of reaction of an unreacted site in polymer reactions depends upon whether the two immediate neighboring sites on either side (four neighboring sites in all) are reacted or unreacted, differential equations were obtained giving the rate of change of Nn with time (where Nn is the number of sequences of n consecutive unreacted sites with a reacted site at both ends) and solved numerically with the help of a computer. Nn was obtained as a function of time and also as a function of M, the total number of unreacted sites. Three sets of values of k were tried, one of these relating to autocatalytic reaction, one to autoretarding reaction, and one to the null case in which the reaction rates do not depend upon the neighbors.

Notes: The addition of up to 10 g gentamicin sulfate antibiotic powder to 60 g units of Simplex-P acrylic bone cement caused gradual, proportional decreases in the bulk mechanical properties of compressive and diametral tensile stengths. Water leaching of the antibiotic from the cement did not significantly decrease these strengths.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed the antibiotic to reside in the acrylic matrix as discrete particles not usually associated with internal porosity. The surface-sensitive flexural strength of a proprietary bone cement was lowered immediately by small quantities of antibiotic powder, and continued to decrease as doses of up to 10 g/unit were admixed. Water leaching caused channeling as the antibiotic was removed from the surface, but it did not create further changes in flexural strength.

Notes: Total joint and other prostheses often require the removal and replacement of considerable quantities of cancellous bone, and often are anchored in place by grouting into cancellous bone. Thus, a possible source of failure or loosening of many types of prostheses may be rooted in the lack of understanding of the structure, properties, and function of this material. In addition, as we have pointed out before, cancellous bone may play an important biomechanical role in the etiology of joint degeneration. With these considerations in mind, the architecture of the cancellous bone in the human patella was studied by serial sectioning and microradiography, using an improved technique developed in our laboratory. Volumes of cancellous bone with apparently different functional roles were identified. Stereological techniques were used to quantify the structural characteristics and geometrical relationships throughout the patella. These results led to a structural model for the cancellous bone of the patella, and a comprehensive picture of the internal architecture. The distribution of mechanical compliance and yield stress was also measured, as a function of location and orientation, by a specially constructed micro-compression testing machine. The measurements reflected the distribution of trabecular architecture, and both the properties and architecture reflected the gross biomechanical function of the patella. Furthermore, a true structure-function relationship was derived. Patellar contact area studies were performed on fresh cadavers and mapped for various angles of flexion. The variation in contact areas and the spatial variations in stiffness are discussed relative to the biomechanics and clinical aspects of the patella.

Notes: The universal calibration for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has been applied to amylose and dextrans. The molecular weight distribution of amylose has been measured starting from known data on dextrans. The agreement found between the molecular weight averages resulting from GPC and those obtained by other methods justifies the procedure followed. The GPC measurements were performed with dimethylsulfoxide as the elution solvent and deactivated silica gel (Porasil) as the column-filling material.

Notes: Polystyrene networks prepared by anionic polymerization have been characterized by small-angle neutron scattering. Two kinds of systems have been examined:(A) networks with labelled branch points allowing characterization of the spatial distribution of crosslinking points; (B) networks containing a low proportion of chains labelled with perdeuterated polystyrene in order to characterize the conformation of individual elastic chains of the polymeric network. The dependence of the results on swelling and uniaxial extension is discussed.

Notes: Thermally stimulated and isothermal depolarization currents of three low-density polyethylenes are investigated in the temperature range 80-320°K. The thermally stimulated current spectra can be analyzed in terms of a continuous relaxation time spectrum. This spectrum can be resolved into three Gaussian distributions of activation energies centered near 140°K (γ-relaxation), 205°K, and 245°K (β-relaxation) in agreement with electrical and mechanical loss factor measurements. The experimental observation are explained in terms of reorienting dipoles, coupling the molecular motion to the electrical field.
