Description / Table of Contents: 77Se n.m.r. spectra of twenty-six organoselenium compounds, including some with an endocyclic selenium atom, have been recorded. Our measurements complete the scale of chemical shifts previously established by McFarlane. It seems difficult to define a range of chemical shifts which is characteristic of the valency state of selenium or of its endo- or exocyclic position. Some results are discussed qualitatively. In the case of selenolo[2,3-b]thiophene, evidence has been obtained for a 4J[Se, H] coupling across the sulphur atom.

Notes: A flash photomicrographic method and modified dye-light transmittance technique are employed to measure size distributions and mixing frequencies in a turbulently agitated flow vessel. This liquid-liquid dispersion is nearly spatially homogenous. Mixing frequencies are strongly dependent on impeller speed and moderately dependent on holdup fraction.

Notes: Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization of a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints. This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as applied to six different problems, which have been previously solved by various other techniques.

Notes: Bench scale packed columns were used to study the kinetic behavior of biological denitrification. After tracer studies were run to determine flow characteristics, steady state nitrate profiles were determined. A first-order rate expression with an Arrhenius temperature dependence is an adequate model of the reaction for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of 〈 100 mg/l and temperature of 5° to 20°C. The rate constants are proportional to the packing surface area.

Notes: A general derivatization method has been developed for both primary and secondary aminoalkylphosphonic acids. Derivatization is effected by reaction with trifluoroacetic acid and trifluoroacetic acid anhydride followed by esterification using ethereal diazo-n-butane. This method can be used for microgram quantities and permits ready characterization by both gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The structure of this derivative has been verified by mass spectrometry and proton magnetic resonance. Fragmentation patterns were confirmed by high resolution mass spectrometry, isotope labeling and the formation of derivative analogs.

Notes: Using electron impact and field desorption mass spectrometry, structures are proposed for narasin and a related ionophore, A28086B, derived from fermentation. The ionic fragmentation of these compounds and their derivatives is discussed and compared with that of salinomycin, whose structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction.

Notes: “Hard elastic” polypropylene fibers respond nonlinearly to stress at all strains. Low tenacities at break (less than 1 g/denier), low moduli of elasticity (slopes of stress-strain curves from 2.8 to 28 g/denier), and large breaking extensions (over 800 percent) are characteristic of “hard elastic” fibers. Behavior in simple extension, cyclic extension, and stress relaxation can be represented by a quasi-linear viscoelastic model which uses a continuous relaxation spectrum and a quasilinear relation between stress history T(t)and strain history λ(t): \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ T(t) = T^e [\lambda (t)] + \int_0^t {T^e [\lambda (\tau)]\dot G(t - \tau){\rm d}\tau } $$\end{document} where Te[λ(t)] is the elastic response. When creep data are available, this model should provide a unified representation of experimental observations.

Notes: Convenient expressions for calculating multicomponent gas phase mass transfer coefficients and transfer rates are obtained by use of an exact matrix method of solution to the Maxwell-Stefan equations. The results are seen to be exact matrix analogues of classical binary relations and may also be applied as an approximation to describe liquid phase transport.
