Description: A rapid noninvasive breathing method is used to obtain serial measurements of the pulmonary capillary blood flow, diffusing capacity per unit of alveolar volume, combined pulmonary tissue plus capillary volume, functional residual capacity, and oxygen consumption in five normal subjects undergoing 6 h of sitting, 4 h of sitting while immersed to the neck in thermoneutral water, and 4 h of lying in thermoneutral water to the neck. The rebreathing method employed a test gas mixture containing 0.5% C2H2, 0.3% C(18)O, 10% He, 21% O2, and balance N2. It is shown that immersion to the neck in the seated posture results in significant increases in sodium excretion cardiac output, and diffusing capacity per unit of alveolar volume. The pulmonary tissue plus capillary volume did not change, demonstrating that the central vascular engorgement induced by water immersion is not accompanied by significant extravasation of fluid into the pulmonary interstitial space.

Description: Cygnus X-1 was observed from 3 November until 9 November 1974, using the hard X-ray (1-28 keV) and soft X-ray (1-8 keV) experiment on board the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite. On three occasions, on 4 and 5 November, the X-ray spectrum was observed to be harder, while the flux intensity in the 1-7 keV ranges decreased by about 50% from its quiescent value. These events occurred near and following the time of superior conjunction of the likely optical counterpart HDE 226 868. These events appear to be the same as previously reported absorption dips and reveal this phenomenon to be more complex than had been believed. A systematic study of the X-ray spectral variations in these energy bands, on a time scale of 64 seconds over the period of the spectroscopic binary, is presented.

Description: The three dimensional inviscid flow in a transonic compressor rotor; total pressure ratio of 1.65, has been numerically computed using MacCormack's time-marching method. This solution is compared to intra-blade static density measurements obtained by gas fluorescence. These results and comparisons illustrate the importance of three dimensional flow phenomena in determining the rotor flow field and show that while the viscous phenomena have an important influence, particularly on the outflow, the inviscid computation properly models the flow in the inlet portion of the rotor passages.

Description: X-rays in the 2-6 keV band were detected from the Algol system using the rotating modulation collimator system on SAS-3 during an observation in October 1975. The measured X-ray flux is 3.8 x 10 to the -11th ergs/sq cm/s/keV. No positive detection was made in the 6-11 keV band. The data are consistent with either a power-law spectrum with photon spectral index not less than 2.5 or a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with a temperature not greater than 3 x 10 to the 7th K.

Description: The present study was undertaken to delineate the effects of water immersion to the neck (NI) on renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate as assessed by the clearance of p-aminohippuric acid (PAH) and inulin, respectively. Nine normal male subjects were studied on two occasions, control and NI. The conditions of seated posture and time of day were identical. Immersion did not alter either clearance at a time when sodium excretion was increasing markedly. The constancy of PAH clearance during NI suggests that renal blood flow is unaltered and that the natriuresis of NI is mediated independently of alterations in overall renal perfusion. The sluggish decline of a natriuresis during recovery is consistent with the presence of a humoral factor contributing to the encountered natriuresis.
