Notes: Abstract The product of the reaction of (π-C5 H5)Ru(PPh3)2 Cl and CuC2Ph has been characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction techniques and shown to have stoichiometry (π-C5 H5)Ru(PPh3)2Cu(C2Ph)Cl-(CH3)2CO(I). The compound contains a phenylethynyl group σ-bonded to the ruthenium atom and simultaneously π-bonded to a terminal Cu-Cl bond. Crystals of this compound from acetone are monoclinic,P21/c, witha = 12.914, = 22.111,c = 16.534 Å, β = 110.77 °, andZ — 4. Full-matrix least-squares refinement constraining the phenyl rings of the triphenylphosphines, the cyclopentadienyl ring, and the solvent of crystallization (acetone) as rigid groups yieldedR and weightedR values of 0.084 and 0.075, respectively.

Notes: Summary Cytologic aspiration specimens of peritoneal fluid revealed that mesothelial cell proportions were significantly reduced 19.2% in women between 26 and 35 years of age. Possibly, mesothelial cell renewal was decreased in women of the older age groups.

Notes: Abstract Skeletonema costatum was grown at different steady-state growth rates in ammonium or silicate-limited chemostats. The culture was perturbed from its steady-state condition by a single addition of the limiting nutrients ammonium or silicate. The transient response was followed by measuring nutrient disappearance of the liliting perturbation experiment indicate that three distinct modes of uptake of the limiting nutrient can be distinguished; surge uptake (V s ), internally controlled uptake (V i ), and externally controlled uptake (V e ). An interpretation of these three modes of uptake is given and their relation to control of uptake of the limiting nutrient is discussed. The uptake rates of the non-limiting nutrients were shown to be depressed during the surge of the uptake of the limiting nutrient. Kinetic uptake parameters, K s and V max, were obtained from data acquired during the externally controlled uptake segment, V e . The same V max value of 0. 12 h-1, was obtained under either silicate or ammonium limitation. Estimates of K s were 0.4 μg-at NH4-N l-1 and 0.7 μg-at Si l-1. Short-term 15N uptake-rate measurements conducted on nitrogen-limited cultures appear to be a combination of V s or V i , or at lower substrate concentrations V s and V e . It is difficult to separate these different uptake modes in batch or tracer experiments, and ensuing problems in interpretation are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-eight species of fungi were identified in pure culture after isolation from activated sewage sludge by serial dilution. Nine species and genera were identified that had not been previously reported. In 1963, Cooke (1) published an excellent laboratory guide on the identification of fungi from polluted water, sewage, and sewage treatment systems; of approximately 30 papers cited only one (2) dealt with fungi from activated sewage sludge. Later (1970), Cooke & Pipes (3) enumerated 47 fungi consisting of 4 genera of yeasts and 33 genera of filamentous fungi that had been isolated from activated sludge. This paper reports the mycoflora of anaerobically digested sludge from a residential area in Auburn, Alabama.

Notes: Abstract Fifty isolates of fungi were screened for their ability to grow on and degrade sludge. Cunninghamella elegans was selected for further study of degradation as affected by moisture, nutrients, time and temperature. Maximal sludge degradation (total dry weight basis) was 5.8% by Rhizopus oligosporus, 5.4% by C. elegans and 5.3% by Myrothecium verrucaria, representing approximately 11% degradation of the organic matter present. Added nutrients had little or no effect on sludge degradation. Maximal sludge degradation by C. elegans occurred in three weeks at 30–35 C or four weeks at 25 and 40 C. Sewage sludge is a stable humic material that breaks down slowly with time when mixed with soil. The disposal of sewage sludge is one of the problems of environmental pollution throughout the world. Approximately 455,000 cubic meters of sewage sludge are produced daily in the United States (7). The development of supplementary methods of sewage treatment to be used in tandem with anaerobic digestors are of current interest. Benefits of such a tandem system utilizing fungi would be the acceleration of recycling of waste, supplemental detoxification of sludge, and perhaps even recovery of utilizable protein. The use of fungi to accelerate sludge degradation with the possible side benefits of production of protein or other recoverable metabolites has not been investigated. This paper reports the screening of fifty fungi for their ability to grow on and degrade anaerobically digested sewage sludge and the determination of the level of protein produced by C. elegans on this medium.

Notes: Abstract The alleged benefits of municipal public land banking are discussed in the context of the following issues: 1) lower housing costs through lower land prices; 2) the elimination of private speculation in land on the urban fringe; and 3) more effective planning of future urban expansion. The arguments presented are illustrated with examples from the Canadian experience. It is concluded that the present case for municipal public land banks as an alternative to existing planning controls is not a convincing one.
