Notes: Environmental effects of feedlot location and related land disposal operations can be minimized if proper knowledge of hazardous conditions are known and appropriate protective steps taken. Common guidelines often do not apply because of differing physical characteristics of local areas.Analyses of various parameters within a soil profile beneath a feedlot revealed none of the chemical constituent present in high concentrations below the 23-foot depth. In areas where shallow ground water was less than 5 feet from the surface, the ground water was found to be affected by the feedlot. Other hazardous areas in feedlot location are flood-prone areas, areas of surface bedrock, and areas of excessive slope. For land disposal operations, loading rates and frequency of application of feedlot waste should be adjusted in accordance with soil permeability, depth to ground water, and irrigation practices to minimize detrimental effects on ground-water quality.

Notes: Fatty acid biosynthesis by a mutant strain of Staphylococcus carnosus deficient in branched-chain amino acid aminotransferase (IlvE) activity was analysed. This mutant was unable to produce the appropriate branched-chain α-ketoacid precursors for branched-chain fatty acid biosynthesis from the amino acids valine, isoleucine, and leucine, and required the short branched chain acids 2-methylbutanoic acid or 2-methylpropanoic acid for growth in a defined medium. The isoleucine related metabolites, α-keto-β-methylvaleric acid and 2-methylbutanal also served as growth factors. Growth in rich medium and growth in defined medium supplemented with 2-methylpropanoic acid lead to extensive alteration of the fatty acid composition in the cell membrane. In rich medium, a change from 51.7% to 17.1%anteiso-C15:0, and from 3.6% to 33.9%iso-C14:0 fatty acids as compared to the wild-type strain was observed. Despite the deficiency in IlvE activity, the mutant strain was still able to produce the short chain carboxylic acids, 3-methylbutanoic acid and 2-methylpropanoic acid when cultivated in rich medium. Supplementation experiments employing deuterated glucose induced the valine biosynthetic pathway for 2-methylpropanoic acid production, revealing that the IlvE protein plays an important, but not essential role in the biosynthesis of branched-chain fatty acids and secondary metabolites in S. carnosus.

Notes: Bdellovibrio-and-like organisms (BALOs) are predatory bacteria that prey upon Gram-negative bacteria and are taxonomically subsumed in the order Bdellovibrionales. Despite their unique lifestyle, these bacteria show remarkable genotypic diversities. The outer membrane of the predators is likely to play an important role during the recognition and invasion stage, as well as in the intraperiplasmic growth phase. In this study, the outer membrane protein fractions of type strains of Bdellovibrio, Bacteriovorax and Peredibacter were investigated, revealing the presence of outer membrane proteins (Omps) similar to the major Omps of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. The primary structures of these Omps of Bdellovibrio sp. W, Bacteriovorax stolpii and Peredibacter starrii were elucidated by a combined mass spectrometric–reverse genetic approach. The similarity between the analyzed Omps of the investigated BALOs ranges from 32% to 89% showing conserved amino acid regions in their primary structure.

Description / Table of Contents: Transition Metal Carbyne Complexes, XVPhenylcarbyne as well as Methoxyphenyl-, (Dimethylamino)phenyl-, and Aminophenylcarbene as Ligands in Cationic or Neutral Complexes of the Type π-ArCr(CO)2LComplexes of the type π-ArCr(CO)3 1a-d are converted into the carbene complexes π-ArCr(CO)2-[C(C6H5)OCH3] 2a-d by treatment with phenyllithium followed by alkylation. On treatment with boron trichloride 2a-d yield the cationic carbyne complexes of the general formula {π-ArCr(CO)2[C(C6H5]}⊕[BCl4]⊖ 3a, c, d Aminolysis with ammonia or dimethylamine leads to the aminocarbene complexes π-ArCr(CO)2[C6H5)NR2] 4 and 5 which are not obtainable by direct aminolysis of 2a-d. These diamagnetic complexes, some of which are very thermolabile, were characterized by i. r., H n. m. r., and 13C n. m. r. spectroscopy.

Description / Table of Contents: Comparative examinations on gold layers applied on silver. By electrolytical deposition, high vacuum evaporation and cladding gold layers of 10-20 μm thickness had been produced on silver. These layers had been examined in their initial state and after different heat treatments on air by a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The microhardness of these layers had also been determined and the diffusion between gold and silver had been studied with the electron microanalyzer. Besides the known features of surface structure and hardness certain differences in the tarnishing and diffusion behaviour had been detected. The cause of these differentiations is primarily due to typical processing features.
